Frequent readers of the cancellation bear will note that the prediction that Hostages is certain to be canceled is nothing new, and far short of brain surgery, but most of the bear's readers aren't frequent ones, and stating the "obvious" to some is "news" for many.

That obvious, that Hostages would be canceled and not return next season is met by some with a "So, it was only a one season limited series anyway" reply. Such is the confusion among many.

"Limited" refers to the number of episodes per season, not the number of seasons. If Hostages had good ratings it would have come back next season (like Sleepy Hollow). Since its ratings are terrible, it will be one and done (like Betrayal).

With its terrible ratings, why is it still on the schedule? CBS' Les Moonves, in a bit of PR lemonade making, called it "patience". The cancellation bear calls it "no better alternatives available at the moment".

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Hostages lost me at this point.

Two and half men should have gone with Charlie Sheen. Ashton K is annoying. Show not good.

Blue Bloods is good. Good also for Friday night relaxing nights.

However, it does seem that some people just cannot figure out how to spend the ten seconds of extra effort it requires to watch or record a CBS Sunday primetime show.

This. I don’t understand what’s so difficult about setting the DVR to record an extra hour or ninety minutes just in case of a delay.

  • AP076

“Meanwhile, Mentalist gets a large bump from DVR viewings, one of the largest percentage increases. So it seems people can adjust their DVRs, but it doesn’t help the live ratings.”

That is simply not true. From the last data we have The Mentalist was not among the top 25 shows with a net increase in demo viewers or percentage increase in demo viewers.

The show was number 17 in increase in useless total viewers but even saying that it had 16 drama shows ahead of it and 9 of them were on CBS. Put another way, with the exception of Hostages, The Mentalist saw the smallest increase in total viewers of all CBS dramas.

I am over 65 so I don’t count at all, but the Good Wife is fantastic, and I personally like “the Steinbergs” and “Crazy People” better than “Modern Family” this year. Also love “scandal”

  • Jon

Why not move 60 minutes to 10 pm on Sunday. That hour seems to kill Cbs shows maybe they can use that hour for a show that isn’t high in the demo but its an older show and still has a somewhat loyal following

The Mentalist probably suffered a major blow on Sunday the 24th. Red John turned out to be a minor character not on the show’s radar for most of the run.Next week’s promo looked like the program will transitioning to another genre. Besides the incredibly convoluted story of the serial killer that murdered Patrick’s family and all the ways this show has repeatedly written itself into a corner, this latest seems a bridge too far. My guess is that many of the fans of TM will begin to flee from the program now that RJ has been revealed.

In a way, the whole purpose of the Simon Baker character has been changed. Writers will have to do some fancy footwork to make everything work and hold onto the audience. Further complications abound with both the Rigsby and Van Pelt characters exiting the program. If it comes down to TGW and TM, I have a feeling Alicia and Co. are safe for another season.

  • Daniel

Good Wife stays. Partially because of syndication and partially because it’s ratings are good in the O&O markets (NY, LA, Chi, SF, etc) Good Wife did a 7.8/3.0 in NY compared to a 8.1/3.4 for 60, 4.7/2.1 for Amazing Race and 6.0/2.0 for Mentalist.

I really don’t get how Hostages could have continued – I mean the President is going to have the surgery and then die or not die. They really going to hold the family hostage for another season?

Of course, considering that the doctor saw the face of the FBI hostage taker, why would she expect to be allowed to live, and thus why would she cooperate, knowing she and her whole family were as good as dead?

Never watched the show. If I was sure it was going to be limited and have a true definitive ending, I would have watched it. But, after Under the Dome got made into a continuing series, I was leery of that. I am sorry now I watched Under the Dome, the premise is stretched far past the breaking point now.

  • Hambone

@AP076 – pretty sure it was in 2 of the 3 previous weeks, though. I recall one week when it was up near the top.

Regardless, after last night’s ep the writing is on the wall for the show. Very few fans are happy with their choice for RJ, or with the episode in general. And the fans who just wanted the RJ bit to be over so they can go back to the CBI crime of the week wont like the new direction starting in next weeks episode.

  • DKD

Were you to have access to C3 ratings instead of Live + Same Day, you would have “Elementary” above CSI, POI, and Mom.

  • Fussy

I never watched Hostages – NOT because I thought it was a temporary series, but because it looked like a pro-Obama propaganda piece. I long for the days when TV wasn’t filled with biased, politically correct writing.

  • Michael1

At the risk of falling for a Jedi mind trick, could the DVR+7 numbers put “The Millers” below “The Crazy Ones” and “Two and a Half Men”? The fact that TCO and TAAHM are consistently in the top 25 of DVR+7, and TM is consistently absent should suggest that people are not going out of their way to watch TM, and that it is more likely in the right place at the right time while the other 2 shows have more loyal fan bases.

  • Tiffany

Mentalist is my favorite show on television right now. I will be so mad if it gets cancelled! :(

  • Kevin

Hostages should not be cancelled, it goes up against one of TV’s hottest new drama The Blacklist which was a brilliant move by NBC. How can you compete with Monday Night Football, The Blacklist, Sleepy Hollow I mean c’mon CBS at least pick a night to give it a chance to be seen. I am hoping and praying that it will be picked up by a streaming network as it deserves to be seen. I have watched every episode of that and The Blacklist not to mention a few more dramas I’m into and this show deserves to be seen by the public. It is in my opinion one of the top 3 shows on TV in that 10pm time slot. I mean I feel the same way about Nashville as I think ABC may be scratching them, another GREAT show! Ok enough ranting, c’mon NETFLIX and pick up HOSTAGES please!
