Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 17, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Beauty And The Beast   0.39
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled, airing remaining episodes 0.39
Hart Of Dixie      0.52
Reign :| :| :| 0.87
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.92
Arrow      1.29
The Originals      1.29
Supernatural      1.40
Vampire Diaries      1.56

The Tomorrow People ratings started strongly. Its premiere 0.9 adults 18-49 rating was above the CW's rating average for the week. Sadly for the show's prospects, its last 3 weeks' 0.6 ratings have dropped it into the relative ratings range that indicates the show could be either canceled or renewed by season end. So, the cancellation bear has adjusted his prediction for it to "toss up" between cancellation and renewal. The bear hopes, and somewhat expects, that come spring, and the premiere of two new CW dramas, the relative ratings positions of both Reign and The Tomorrow People will become a bit clearer.

Why is The Carrie Diaries defacto canceled?

Fall premiere shows that receive a 13 episode order (veteran or rookie), and no follow on episodes are canceled. (note, Life Unexpected). There will be no announcement, as always, except the fact that it's left off the schedule announced in May.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

GO! Reign rocks and I can’t wait for it to be renewed.

  • julia

still don’t get why TCD is listed as cancelled but SFN on ABC isn’t… they didn’t get a back 9 order either

  • Alessio

‘de facto canceled, airing remaining episodes’ lol

  • Boiler

Hopefully HoD lasts as long as actors want to do it There needs to be a place for a fun show like this somewhere

  • Jesse

SPN is still going strong. :)

  • Jonay

If The Carrie Diaries is canceled and NIKITA is ending what shows will The CW move to Fridays?

  • Scandalicious

The battle between Reign and The Tomorrow People continues! Honestly, I wish that both of them could be renewed. I just don’t see that happening since both midseason shows look fairly strong as well, especially The 100. CW is going to be doing some schedule shuffling come midseason! I am thinking:

    Hart of Dixie
    Star Crossed

    The Originals

    The Tomorrow People

    The Vampire Diaries
    The 100

    Beauty and the Beast

However: if Reign continues to outperform The Tomorrow People (like it did this week), I could see them keeping Reign where it is an airing The 100 behind Arrow with The Tomorrow People moving to Fridays with Beauty and the Beast.

  • Pr

I believe TTP will go to Mondays along with Star-Crossed, Tuesdays remain untouched, Wednesdays give The 100 a strong lead-in in Arrow, Thursdays remain untouched as well and Fridays host the losers till all their ordered episodes air.

  • omabin

My only disagreement here is this notion that The Carrie Diaries is dead. For me, it’s simply a likely cancellation on par with Beauty and the Beast, not even a certain one. I certainly don’t think it’s cancelled yet. Other than that I agree. I would keep HoD as likely renewal, but I am fine with certain.

  • Pr

The CW WON’T put Reign on Fridays this season. Heck, even if they renew it, Reign isn’t likely to go there.

  • Valerie

What does it mean TCD is de facto cancelled? I have to miss something.

  • Dude

I don’t see The CW sacrificing any of its first season shows to Fridays. I think Beauty and the Beast is a safe bet and isn’t America’s Next Top Model also going to be on Fridays?

  • Caio

I just don’t understand why Carrie is described as ‘de facto cancelled’. There has been no news about it, and it was intended to have a short season, from what I understand.

  • Charmed

TCD and BATB averages, highs, and lows

    The Carrie Diaries
    18-49 avg = 0.32
    Viewers avg = 0.81 million
    Season high 18-49 = 0.35 (11/15)
    Season low 18-49 = 0.30 (10/25 + 11/08)
Season high viewers = 0.89 million
Season low viewers = 0.77 million

    Beauty And The Beast
    18-49 avg = 0.29
    Viewers avg = 0.79 million
    Season high 18-49 = 0.30 (10/07 + 10/14 + 10/21 + 11/11 + 11/18)
    Season low 18-49 = 0.27 (11/04)
    Season high viewers = 0.90 (10/14)
    Season low viewers = 0.68 (11/04)

The Friday factor adds what, 20 – 30%, am I right?

  • Aiden_Mathis

CW is doing great this season. 4 shows above 1.0 average. (Remember 2011-2012 when only TVD could do that) …Of course Hart Of Dixie and BaTB are tanking harder than other shows they had in the past, so they’re average as a whole goes down… But as soon as they get rid of it… I mean, NOW they are on the right path.

I like that “defacto canceled.” Sing along with Yogi!

Bring The Mentalist to the CW for Fri & a new demo with it. It can do no worse than TCD or Nikita!

  • Netro

The CW once stable Tuesday-Thursday is starting to crack, they are back to square one

TTP and Reign are flops that need to be put down soon.

  • lll

That doesn’t mean anything. The CW can use Carrie Diaries as backup in case a show fails. The plan has been to air 13 episodes from the start. The CW can still renew it. It’s getting the same (sometimes better) ratings than BATB on a Monday and networks are forgiving of Friday ratings.

Of course as of right now with Reign, Tomorrow People, and Originals doing so well the CW don’t have to settle for Carrie Diaries or BATB. We’ll see if the theory holds up.

  • smelt

    My guess for mid season.

    The Tomorrow People
    Star Crossed

    The 100

  • Cone

I will not accept TCD as cancelled as long as TBTB is labelled cancelled as well

No I don’t even care about the show
