Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 17, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Beauty And The Beast   0.39
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled, airing remaining episodes 0.39
Hart Of Dixie      0.52
Reign :| :| :| 0.87
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.92
Arrow      1.29
The Originals      1.29
Supernatural      1.40
Vampire Diaries      1.56

The Tomorrow People ratings started strongly. Its premiere 0.9 adults 18-49 rating was above the CW's rating average for the week. Sadly for the show's prospects, its last 3 weeks' 0.6 ratings have dropped it into the relative ratings range that indicates the show could be either canceled or renewed by season end. So, the cancellation bear has adjusted his prediction for it to "toss up" between cancellation and renewal. The bear hopes, and somewhat expects, that come spring, and the premiere of two new CW dramas, the relative ratings positions of both Reign and The Tomorrow People will become a bit clearer.

Why is The Carrie Diaries defacto canceled?

Fall premiere shows that receive a 13 episode order (veteran or rookie), and no follow on episodes are canceled. (note, Life Unexpected). There will be no announcement, as always, except the fact that it's left off the schedule announced in May.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’m loving this season of HOD- I just want Zoe to get back with Wade ASAP!! I really hope they’re around for another season or two. This show is so sweet and I’ve looked forward to it every week for the last 3 years!

I get why fans of The Carrie Diaries are questioning the “cancelled” label in principal, but that’s all it really is. The principal that it’s not official yet. Beauty and the Beast is just as obviously done as TCD but the fact that it still has episodes to run gives it the slightest of possibilities of turning its fate around. Won’t happen but it’s still technically possible.

TCD is done. Regardless of what The CW might have intended for season two or why it was renewed at all, it’s done nowhere near well enough to merit another mercy renewal. HoD moves to Fridays next season. TCD is over.

I think Bill Gorman knows a lot more than you people on the subject matter. If he says it’s cancelled is because he knows a thing or two about a thing or two.

  • Charmed

@kb That might be the case if he predicted it cancelled, but he’s saying it’s cancelled when it’s not.

Bill, here’s a question for you, why did all news sites report BITG cancelled when it didn’t get a back order, but not TCD?

I wonder what SPN gonna do tonight since they have a horrible lead in.

  • A

This is what I predict will happen next season

    The Originals

    The Flash

    New Drama

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Tomorrow People

    Hart of Dixie
    America’s Next Top Model

I feel TTP has a lot of potential to be a hit for the network, but it needs to drop the whole love triangle nonsense between the three leads. More action, less romance please!

In terms of HoD, it’s the little engine that could, but I could see it either being pushed to Fridays, midseason or even summer for next season, depending on how The 100 and Star-Crossed do.

Sorry but TCD really is cancelled. True you haven’t had an official announcement yet but it’s equally true that you probably never will. Maybe a mention in passing when the 2014/15 season is announced if you’re lucky, but that’s all.

The truth is that if TCD had been doing well enough then it would have been given a back nine regardless of what was said last year. It’s not as if the limited series status it has been unofficially given was set in stone and the show would have been happy to extend to a full season if it had been asked to. They would have jumped at the chance to get those extra episodes made. That The CW don’t see TCD as a good enough option to see out that slot for the rest of the year speaks volumes for its chances against other new shows that will possibly do better on the schedule.

Again, HoD is going to take that slot next year and TCD is in no way a big enough show to move away from Friday. It’s done, and by that I do mean cancelled.

  • Brandy

a,TTP won’t get the post VD slot next season,VD will probably be used to launch a new show unless it moves to 9 pm.

  • MaryAnn

I hope they move BATB to a new timeslot (even Fridays) to give it a chance to pick uo audience before they cancel it. I strongly suspect that the bad numbers are tied to the bad time slot.

  • Bored Now

If they move BatB it’ll be to Friday and only to burn this season off and call it done. Just hoping the writers are preparing a solid end for the fans because the best you can say about the situation is that they should know for certain that they aren’t coming back for season 3. Gives them a chance for closure.

No way Tomorrow People is keeping the post TVD slot next year. In fact I doubt it’ll see the rest of the season out there. The 100 or Star-Crossed will more than likely premiere there instead.

  • Brandy

@BoredNow, I know that, that’s what I was telling A.Reign is after VD now, not TTP

  • Bored Now

Sorry, my bad. It was the post Arrow slot I was talking about. Was rushing and typed TVD by mistake.

  • Jermal

The midseason begins in January which is 6 weeks from now so it is too late for full season pick ups.

  • margot

Stop with BATB, mediocre show with actors pessimi.Non is no chemistry between Kristin and Ryan, the actor has no charisma and charm. They are right to delete BATB!

  • iSayso

The CW is a dumpster of nutrient-less garbage that bears love to devour. Feast on, Yogi!

  • Brandy

I’m worried about HoD:the DVr & W18-34 and Live numbers are down, it wasnt included in new TV Now promo released last month and it seems it ,BatB are going into the holiday hiatus very early.I know HoD is Likley o get a fourth season for syndication cause it’s in third but..Does anyone know why HoD was excluded from the newest, latest promo?
I hope Reign gets renewed of the freshman shows.
Serena, CD is a limited series 13 episodes a season and Pedowitz said they might not order more episodes.CW has too many shows coming at Midseason, spring so two shows have to move to fri so there’s not room on the schedule for a full season.

  • Phil

The Carrie Diaries isn’t cancelled. They only ordered 13 and no more because they only want 13 episode seasons for it.
