Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 17, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Beauty And The Beast   0.39
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled, airing remaining episodes 0.39
Hart Of Dixie      0.52
Reign :| :| :| 0.87
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.92
Arrow      1.29
The Originals      1.29
Supernatural      1.40
Vampire Diaries      1.56

The Tomorrow People ratings started strongly. Its premiere 0.9 adults 18-49 rating was above the CW's rating average for the week. Sadly for the show's prospects, its last 3 weeks' 0.6 ratings have dropped it into the relative ratings range that indicates the show could be either canceled or renewed by season end. So, the cancellation bear has adjusted his prediction for it to "toss up" between cancellation and renewal. The bear hopes, and somewhat expects, that come spring, and the premiere of two new CW dramas, the relative ratings positions of both Reign and The Tomorrow People will become a bit clearer.

Why is The Carrie Diaries defacto canceled?

Fall premiere shows that receive a 13 episode order (veteran or rookie), and no follow on episodes are canceled. (note, Life Unexpected). There will be no announcement, as always, except the fact that it's left off the schedule announced in May.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

TCD is not canceled. It will be, but not yet.
Batb is still stable & safe. It will go up for winter finale.

  • iSayso

Attention, everyone: TCD has left the building!

  • DM

@Brandy, him saying that they would possibly order more episodes is an indication that TCD is NOT meant to be a limited series. If it was getting good ratings, they would certainly have room for it on the Winter schedule. It’s ratings are terrible so really there is no REASON for it to be on the Winter schedule.

Who is “they”, just out of curiosity? Because I’m trying to understand why anyone involved with TCD would limit a relatively inexpensive show to 13 episodes by default, on a network that would gladly take any hit series it can get its hands on. Surely if TCD was seen to be doing okay, especially on a Friday, they would at least want to keep the momentum going with a full season? And exactly what benefit does a further 13 episode season offer the network next year against other shows that are already proving to be more successful, even taking TCD season 1 ratings into account?

Not to pick on the show and its fans but it’s as if they are looking at the show’s chances in a bubble of its very own and ignoring everything else that’s going on this season. The CW hasn’t had this much reason to be positive about its schedule in a long time. TCD was spackle this season. There’ll be no need for spackle next year.

  • Brandy

@Bored because Pedowitz said he wanted to try cable length seasons when he picked up CD & Cult.Google it and I’ll bet you find that interview.
@ DM he also said “we may not Oder more.We looked at CD as a limited series last year too.”He also knew with Seed,Masters of Illusion,Famous in 12 Weeks,Star-Crossed,The Hundred,Whose Line all suppossedly to be in season, there wasnt roomfor CD full season.

  • milo

Just accept it, Phil. De facto cancelled.

Not saying that wasn’t the case when he said it, because the idea works in theory, but the point still stands. It isn’t doing well enough to be considered for a third season against current competition, and even if it was then any plans for a cable length series would have been nixed in favour of keeping TCD in the spotlight for the rest of the season. As things stand now, it’s far too weak a prospect to waste a third chance on and will have no chance of improvement once the short season is done.

Out of sight is likely to be very much out of mind for TCD, I’m afraid.

  • Dollface

I really would like reign picked up for season 2. It has been a long time since I have liked a show this much not since trueblood season 1.

@Bored,DM May 16 2013 deadline CWs Amazon pilot redeveloped with new writer ,Ney eyes The 100,Carrie Diaries for limited Runs
May 9 2013 Deadline. CWs Carie Diaries,Nikita renewed
The networks not confirming the size of the pickups but Carries is automatically a 13 episode order as its a Midseason show

  • starship

“we may not order more” means we’ll cancel it. It was an either-or scenario and clearly the ratings aren’t in Carrie’s favor. I understand fans want to grasp onto every word that might have been said or reported at one time or another, but Bill is right. If it was really meant to be a limited series that was to continue in the 2014-2015 season, they would have announced it’s been renewed for a third season when they picked up the rest of the shows for full seasons. ‘Limited series’ seems to be the new PR spin for “if it flops we can always say it was never meant to continue” and people seem to be buying it, but out of all the rumoured limited series, the only one which turned out to be such was Sleepy Hollow (and probably just because they had no room for it on the schedule).

  • HeadlessHorseman

Quit bitching about TCD! Cancelled, will be cancelled. Potato, patato. Even though it’s not officially cancelled, it is de facto cancelled. For the love of God, move on!

CW renews Ninita & Carrie Diaries
“This is the news we wanted.CW renewed Carrie Diaries and Nikita for a second & fourth season respectively .Some reports suggest that the renewals will be for less than full 22 episode .”
If CW intended CD to have a full season, wouldn’t they given it one when they renwed it like they did BatB?

    You’re still missing the point.

It doesn’t matter in the slightest what was said or done last season, or what the intentions may or may not have been.

Right now, The CW is in a very strong position and has no need of middling shows with average ratings to fill the schedule up. TCD might, and it’s still only a small might, have done well enough to get a third limited season if the existing and new shows hadn’t been so strong this year, but both Reign and TTP are doing as well if not relatively better than TCD. The 100 and Star-Crossed are both still to premiere. All the veteran shows are doing really well and The Originals is a guaranteed hit already. To compete against all of that TCD would have to be doing a hell of a lot better than mediocre ratings and a limited run.

We can disagree on the original intent of the TCD episode order all night (although you’ll never convince me that the 13 episodes were so set in stone that a ratings surge for TCD wouldn’t have got it a full 22 episode season on Friday) but you can’t ignore that the show is in no way doing well enough to go off the air for six months and then still compete with the rest of a much stronger CW schedule come May. It won’t be renewed.

  • Brandy

HoD when it was renewed for a second season, it was for a full one automatically cause that’s what cw wanted,
Daily Beast May 16 2013 CW reveals it 2013-2014 Primetime Schedule
Pedowitz said”Carrie Diaries was a Midseason show (last season) so the obligation was for only 13″

  • Charmed

Amy B Harris, executive producer and writer on The Carrie Diaries, recently replied to a fans tweet saying this

@abharris: “@hazthestyles: the Carrie diaries is SO GOOD!! I heard it could be cancelled if that happens ill cry” keep watching! We are not cancelled.

Now, I’m sure if The Carrie Diaries was really cancelled, she wouldn’t be tweeting fans saying it’s not.

  • Charmed

Yes, TCD would have gotten a full season order if the ratings skyrocketed, but Mark knew they wouldn’t. He renewed it because it does well online, which, unlike other networks, The CW takes into account when making renewal decisions. Also, they need to make room for their Midseason shows.

  • Bored Now

See my previous comment as far as you “still missing the point” goes.

The last thing you should ever do regarding the future of a show is rely on what the people who make it are publicly tweeting. PR is not your friend.

  • Bored Now

“He renewed it because it does well online, which, unlike other networks, The CW takes into account when making ‘spackle’ decisions.”

    Corrected that for you! ;)

And again, last season’s decisions were based on a much weaker year than this one. There’s no online factor going to save TCD this time around.

  • Brandy

@Bored I get your point , but you and Bill/Robert,/Tom Shaw don’t get mine :that CD was intended always a 13episodes a season series and I have provided at least four articles proving that/backing that up so the fact CD didn’t get a backorder dosent means its cancelled.
Also you see to miss the point that CW has a rich five year multi million dllar deal with Hulu,Netflix so shows that do well there(like cw said Nikita & Carrie do) make the network money.
I agree that CDs live & DVr ratings aren’t good but they weren’t last season either yet it was renewed.Yes,TO is a hit but Reign,TTP are bubble shows now and could (&one or both Likley will collapse in spring like almost Czw freshman show(Ringer,Secret Circle). We also don’t know how SC or the 100 will do , they could both be Cult like flops.Everyone expected HoD to be cancelled in season one,yet it was renewed.Everyone expected Nikita to be cancelled in seasons two and three (with CD like ratings) yet it was renewed.Everyone expected CD ,BatB to be cancelled last season, yet they were renewed Anything can happen with CW.

  • Bored Now

No, I think we all get what you mean, but flip that around and you’ll see what we’re saying.

Okay, let’s take it as fact that TCD was renewed as a 13 episode season two. I don’t think anyone here is denying that. What is being said is that given the success of the current season, TCD would have to have had done far better than it has done to survive, almost certainly to the point of having the current season extended, EVEN IF that wasn’t originally the plan.

The fact that The CW hasn’t extended the run isn’t evidence of cancellation alone admittedly (but again you wouldn’t get confirmation anyway, in all likelihood) but that combined with the mediocre ratings and the strong competition would strongly suggest the axe.

If you want to hold on to hope then by all means go ahead. That’s fan prerogative after all. But unless The CW actually announces the renewal before the show goes off the air (as Fox did for Sleepy Hollow) then expect to be disappointed. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
