The Tomorrow People ratings started strongly. Its premiere 0.9 adults 18-49 rating was above the CW's rating average for the week. Sadly for the show's prospects, its last 3 weeks' 0.6 ratings have dropped it into the relative ratings range that indicates the show could be either canceled or renewed by season end. So, the Cancellation Bear has adjusted his prediction for it to "toss up" between cancellation and renewal. The bear hopes, and somewhat expects, that come spring, and the premiere of two new CW dramas, the relative ratings positions of both Reign and The Tomorrow People will become a bit clearer.

Why is The Carrie Diaries defacto canceled?

Fall premiere shows that receive a 13 episode order (veteran or rookie), and no follow on episodes are canceled. (note, Life Unexpected). There will be no announcement, as always, except the fact that it's left off the schedule announced in May.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    … a photo of her *and the cast* typo :P

  • Shane

    B&tB and TCD are both going to be canceled along with either TTP or Reign.

  • Melanie

    @Tom That makes sense. And the whole line-up is stronger this season.

  • Brandy

    @Tom, last night wasn’t the series/season finale.That’ll be in Jan after CD finishes its 13 episodes.Don’t know why you think that.

  • Dan W

    While The Carrie Diaries is likely to be canceled, it was likely to be canceled last year as well. I think I would die laughing if it escaped death yet again and everyone on this site was wrong. I feel like it would work decently as spackle or even a summer show…the CW president said he wanted to do programming all year long so maybe they will do a third season starting this May.

    Monday
    The Flash (new)
    The 100

    Tuesday
    The Originals
    Supernatural

    Wednesday
    Arrow
    Texas Dynasty Drama

    Thursday
    The Vampire Diaries
    Supernatural Spinoff

    Friday
    Hart of Dixie
    ANTM

    Save Reign and 1-2 new dramas for midseason.

  • Melanie

    The Futon Critic has 27 pilot scripts listed as in development for the CW 2014-15. Two of those, The Flash & the SPN Spin-off have already been ordered to pilot. Assuming that the CW stays close to what it has done in the past and orderes a total of 6-8 pilots, what other six scripts sound interesting to you guys?

    I like:
    The Painted Girls
    Someday, Someday, Maybe
    Players
    The Perfectionists
    Badlands
    Tales From the Dark Side

  • Charmed

    @Melanie I liked:

    Someday, Someday Maybe
    Dorothy Must Die
    The Noise
    Players
    Star Crazy
    Untitled Matt Witten Project
    Tales From The Dark Side

    With my luck, none of them will be picked up :(

  • thesnowleopard

    @kb

    There are plenty of “girly” things guys will watch if they have hot chicks on them.

  • thesnowleopard

    @Melanie

    Much as I loved the original version, I don’t think “Tales from the Darkside” is a good fit for the CW at all.

    The rest sound…weird.

  • Chris_SAdvisor

    @Melanie

    Would Order
    The Flash – Arrow spin-off. Weaker than arrow, but still a good character.
    The Revengers – Vengeance tailored to the female audience (large portion of CW).
    Tales From The Dark Side – Romero brings us in and Kurtzman scares us away. Good for at least two seasons.
    The Perfectionists – Whole, well regarded, series of books – if this can be adapted well, it could be big.
    SPN Spin-off – Depends on cast, and timeline within SPN universe. Should be a hit, and could even eclipse SPN.

    Would order pilot, and want sketch of first five episodes.
    Badlands – sounds like Dark Tower type story, and only ghosts? Comparisons to SPN and SPN spin-off could hurt.
    Hourman – Sound like a 24 clone, anti-hero. Too many superhero shows at once (Arrow, TTP, Flash).
    Red – SciFi western sounds interesting, but the talent making it has no SciFi experience. Hope they get an advisor.
    The Painted Girls – Book is average, though the material sounds appropriate for CW. Period piece though.

    Would Shelve
    Untitled Avenger Project – Would shelve until AoS is in second year and is strong. Already better superhero shows.

    Would Ignore
    Dorthy must Die – Schizophrenic main character? SPN possible comparison.
    IZombie – Cute girl eating brains would get real old, real fast (e.g. the first time). Comparison to TWD.

    Just out of interest, and in no way meaning this question to be in any way derogatory or nasty, how many of the guys who say they watch The Carrie Diaries are gay?

    The reason I ask is that out of all the male friends I know well enough to be aware of their television habits, I know exactly two who watch shows like Sex and the City and Gossip, and they are a gay couple. Not a single straight guy I know watches teen girl shows like those. Frankly there’s nothing about them to enjoy, as far as I can see. Can’t remember who said this further up thread but the suggestion that guys will watch anything with hot chicks in is wrong. I think Freema Agyeman is stunning and I’ll watch her in Doctor Who all day but you’d never get me watching TCD just to see her.You get hot chicks in action shows like SPN and Arrow so why watch TCD instead if that’s the only reason for a guy to watch?

    I don’t think it’s sexist to say that, in general, guys and girls do have very different tastes. Not everyone fits the stereotype but like any stereotype it exists because it’s mostly true. It would be sexist to say that someone couldn’t or shouldn’t watch a show because of their gender. Suggesting that some shows skew more to one gender or the other, maing them ‘girly’ or indeed ‘blokey’ is just common sense and frankly true.

  • Bored Now

    No idea how Gossip Girl became just Gossip in that last comment, but somehow it did…

  • Melanie

    @Chris_SAdvisor
    I see we like some of the same ones. :)
    I also thought that the Revengers is aimed at that W18-34 audience almost exclusively it sounds like, but I didn’t go with it because Mark Pedowicz has said he’s looking to broaden that focus to A18-34 and it seems like a limited premise to me.
    I hesitated over Hourman too. Its a DC property, which is in its favor, but since the Flash is going forward to a real pilot, not a backdoor episode of Arrow, they might not go with another superhero pilot this season.
    I liked Red’s premise, but I don’t know if the CW has the budget to do that scale of SciFi. (I guess we’ll see when the 100 finally debuts)
    I also would absolutely shelve the Untitled Avenger Project — but not because of anything to do w/ SHIELD — Dawn Ostroff is one of the producers — she’s done enough damage.

    @Charmed
    I thought that the Matt Witten Project might work, but I doubt they would go with three music related pilots so I’d go with that one rather than the Noise and/or Star Crazy.
    I can’t help it, I just don’t like the premise of Dorothy Must Die. She’s not the bad guy! LOL

    @thesnowleopard You may be right, I never really watched the original – I just thought that the CW has been having luck with genre type shows and an anthology type limited series could be like the CW’s American Horror Story. Although now as I type that, I’m thinking its not that great of an idea, is it?

    Thanks for playing, guys!

    @Bored Now
    It isn’t sexist to say a show is marketed toward women or men. It is sexist to call a show ‘girly’ with the intent that it’s bad to be girly.

    And even though you said you didn’t mean it like this, it is nevertheless offensive and exclusionary to imply only gay men watch ‘girly’ shows. Now you’re basing allowed viewership on sexuality instead of gender, because you can’t fathom that people ‘like you’ ie straight men could ever possibly enjoy these shows. Acknowledging that it’s wrong to be bigoted while being bigoted doesn’t exactly excuse you.
    It is a sexist gender construct to believe men can’t possibly like the same things women do. It is one of those ‘self fulfilling prophecies’ made of social stigma from people like you trying to control others behavior. And I disagree, stereotypes are not mostly true, they’re just what you think is true about people you’ve never met. There’s a reason why children are taught not to stereotype.

    @Melanie
    CW really seem to have a lot of in development projects this season, but it’s pretty easy to tell which have zero chance in hell in ever getting a pilot order, never mind get ordered to series. Out of the 27 the only ones I think might stand a chance at a pilot order are:
    Dorothy Must Die.
    The Flash (already ordered).
    iZombie.
    The Perfectionist.
    RED or Colony (kind of banking on Colony if either gets an order).
    Tales from the Darkside (read somewhere they wanted it as a summer series).
    Supernatural Spin-off (already confirmed to air as a Supernatural episode this season).
    and perhaps one of these:
    Untitled Avenger Project (mostly due to the Dawn Ostroff connection).
    Someday, Someday Maybe (apparently a few networks were fighting for the book rights, still don’t see it fitting on the CW, though).
    The Revengers (only if they cancel HoD and want a new light-hearted show).

    None of the musical shows, the western, artificial insemination, or female-to-male show stand a chance on the CW and neither do I see the period/cop/lawyer shows making it, either.

    It’s good that they seem to have a bigger development budget this season, though, shows that WB and CBS aren’t losing faith in the network.

  • Melanie

    @starship
    Don’t you think both Colony & Red sound an awful lot like the 100? If 100 hits, I wouldn’t think they’d want another and if it fails they surely won’t.

    I just can’t believe they’ll go with the zombie one — it just sounds like such a limited premise,(to me) unless its a procedural with the twist that the coroner not only eats their brains, she solves their murders too or something.(13 episodes and done at best)

    I agree that the music themed ones are a long shot — but last season I thought a historical (sort of) drama was too and yet here we are with Reign going for 22 episodes.I kind of group Someday, Someday Maybe in with those. Matt Witten is hot because of MadMen and Ellen DeGeneres would be a great partner for the CW with her popularity and platform for publicity — I don’t know if we can write them off.Heck they might want another period drama to pair with Reign if it gets renewed.

    CW had been looking for a procedural — I don’t know if they’ve given up on that, but if not The Perfectionists might be it – especially since there are source books — the CW loves that.

    It is a lot more spec scripts than they had last year. It seems like Mr pedowicz is really keeping his options open.

  • starship

    @Melanie
    iZombie is a procedural. She eats the brains, gains their memories and helps solve the crimes. It’s also a DC property and is developed by the guy behind Veronica Mars. Also people are crazy about zombies and witches these days, just like they were about vampires 5 years ago (when they launched TVD) and about dystopian futures the last 2 years (which they were trying to jump on with The Selection). I really don’t see Ellen or Eva Longoria having much pull at the CW, so the fact that they’re producing some shows wouldn’t really matter. And those pilots really don’t sound like they’d fit on any of the broadcast networks. As I said, Dawn Ostroff has a better shot seeing as how she run the network for years (albeit controversially in some people’s eyes).

  • Miller

    I think reign might get picked for a second season which might help the show a little more. If it keeps doing better as it has been lately it definitely will. TTP should get cancelled, the way things are headed the show will just keep decreasing in viewers.
