Last Spring, Raising Hope was renewed for its current, fourth, season, during which it will reach the 88 episode level that seems to be the minimum these days for extra profitable stripped syndication. That doesn't mean that this had to be its final season, were its ratings good, it could have evaded the Cancellation Bear for years. Unfortunately for the show, its fractional premiere ratings on Friday make it certain to be canceled this season.

Almost Human started just fine on Sunday following the late NFL game. An hour of the cancellation bear sleeping could start just fine on Sunday following the late NFL game. Let's see what happens in the coming weeks.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

FOX ordered 20 episodes of “Hope” for season 4 (not including the 2 unaired from last season). Ep 14 is currently shooting (so by this Friday 16 of the 22 episodes to air this season will be in the can). The double whammy was moving the show to Friday night, and premiering it 2 months after the new season had already started. The limited number of people watching TV on Friday nights have already established their routine, so why change it now? Air “Dads” on Friday and see what happens? The doubling up of “Hope” episodes in NOT a sign that FOX is trying to burn them off as fast as they can. I guess we will see why once “Enlisted” starts airing next year. PRAYING that when the DVR numbers come in next week, “Hope” can distance itself a little from the bear. Would also be nice if FOX promoted the show…..

I really hope Bones does better this week. I honestly think having 2 new episodes on two different night in the same week confused a lot of people

  • HeadlessHorseman

I’m holding out hope for Hope but I know it’s likely dead. I just hope Fox notifies the writers so they can give the show a proper series finale.

Fox really should have moved Glee and Dads to Friday. Glee is ending next year and Dads is a Dead show walking. Bones could have moved to Thursdays and Raising Hope could have stayed on Tuesdays.

  • ToXiX

Raising Hope would be doing no better than Dads or Mindy on Tuesday.

  • Kim Olson

Well that headline depressed me. But it’s time.

  • sofaspud

Can’t say HOPE prediction comes as a surprise. It’s a shame though, it’s a cute little show with heart, humor and definite sense of self — that’s pretty rare to find in sitcoms anymore. Their “introducing” the acing debut of Cloris Leachman each episode is amusing. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

  • Katiebug

    I like RH :(

  • HeadlessHorseman

    @ToXiX
I disagree. RH never crumbled against heavy competition and always pulled around 1.5-1.7 against the Voice, HIMYM, or NCIS.

Plus, I’m not sure Fox has a syndication deal in place yet. RH would be worth more in syndication if it pulled 1.2-1.4 on a Tuesday than it would be if it pulled .6-.8 on a Friday.

  • Sarah

    @HeadlessHorseman

“Fox really should have moved Glee and Dads to Friday…Bones could have moved to Thursdays and Raising Hope could have stayed on Tuesdays.”

I know I should let it go, but I’ll be really miffed if either Dads or Glee is as low (or lower) this week as last. And I honestly think Bones still could have given Grey’s a run for its money if it was back on Thursdays. JMO, though.

  • a p garcia

FOX moving RH to Friday almost sealed its faith, unless by some miracle it is moved back to Tuesday. If it keeps its current ratings, RH days on Friday are numbered along with Bones.

  • spinthesky

While it is a shame, this doesn’t come as a surprise at all. Premiering a show mid-November on a Friday night? No one watches TV at that time, and those that do already have established TV schedules set for the season. I agree that swapping Dads with Raising Hope would’ve been a wiser decision, but it is what it is. Having Dads air on the same night as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mindy Project makes the latter shows look better in comparison. ;)

I’m still wondering what they’re going to do about X Factor…

  • NE1

I didn’t even know Raising Hope was on or I would have watched.

    Duarte,
Mindy Project needs 2 more seasons for syndication… its a gonner

  • Jon

Another show that nobody ever cared about bites the dust

  • sebbenvolio

Yup Bones probably would have stacked up well against Grey’s and the other thursday lineups are pretty weak. The syndication deal on TNT also acts as free publicity and prevents viewership from falling too much, kind of like NCIS marathon did on USA network for years.

Not sure how the itunes music downloads for Glee factors in, but it must offset some of the weak ratings.

  • Rob R

The problem for FOX is the horrific “X Factor” using up three hours of Sun to Thurs prime time that could instead be used for “Bones” and “Raising Hope.” “Raising Hope” is just as clever as it ever was, and there is no reason why creatively this has to be the last season.

  • Steve

Fox should have canceled Glee instead of renewing it for 2 more years since the star is dead.

Raising Hope is as hilarious as My Name Is Earl was.

  • ChuckTesta

lol I’ve been saying for MONTHS that Raising Hope being moved to Friday was the same as cancelling it. I love how you guys are just now acknowledging it. Yeah if it had gotten really good ratings it could have continued on Friday, but did anyone think for a second it would?

  • ChloeC

I’m so upset about Mindy because it has a loyal albeit small following that is fully dedicated to the show. The show has gotten so much better now and the cast is impressive. I’m hoping the Christmas episode bring in good numbers. I’d hate to see it go. The timeslot is a killer though (remember Til Death) and that awful trash called xfactor is killing everything. RH on a Friday was the mark of death.
