Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 24, 2013):

Each year, the President of the United States ceremonially pardons one or more turkeys from becoming part of the national Thanksgiving dinner. Now you can play the part of the President, and choose which CW ratings turkeys you'd spare from consumption by the cancellation bear. The big difference being, the turkeys that the President spares actually get to live, your choices (like every internet poll) are just for meaningless fun.

Every scripted show currently on the air for the CW is in the poll.

As they say in Chicago, vote early, vote often.

Why is The Carrie Diaries defacto canceled?

Fall premiere shows that receive a 13 episode order (veteran or rookie), and no follow on episodes are canceled. (note, Life Unexpected). There will be no announcement, as always, except the fact that it's left off the schedule announced in May.

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Can I just ask why The tomorrow People is above Reign in the index? Reign has had 2 .7 whereas the tomorrow people 2 .6’s? Just wondering

  • Percysowner

I’m always surprised how many shows I watch on the CW. Arrow, Supernatural, The Originals, TVD are my main shows and I have no doubt they will all be renewed. Tomorrow People I wanted to like but it really didn’t catch me the way I thought it would. More John and Russell less Steven would help and no triangle would help.

  • Contrarian

TPP had a better ratings for its premiere and first few episodes. One of the flaws of the index is it’s not weighted to account for rapidly declining ratings.

Since this poll is between TCD and BATB I would choose BATB over TCD any day of the week.

The CW haven’t announced their mid-season schedule yet and frankly I’d be shocked if they send their most promising show to debut on Friday, unless they want to try and re-build their Friday nights with original programming, but that’s still a bit risky to try, especially in mid-season.

It’s because TTP premiered higher and those ratings are still part of its average. Give it a week or two and Reign will overtake it (if their ratings stay stable).

  • deb

Uh, from what I understand “Supernatural” is a HIT this season, so why is it on the Ratings Turkey’s list?!!!

  • Val

Because every show is. It’s just a poll.

From the text – “Every scripted show currently on the air for the CW is in the poll.”

  • C.S.Strowbridge

People who think B&TB should be kept around are nuts. The only way it stays is if the entire midseason replacements bomb hard. We’re talking 0.1 – 0.2 territory.

Hell, if I were in control of the CW, I’d keep The Carrie Diaries over Beauty and the Beast and Heart of Dixie.

  • Dave

I’m anxious to see what The CW does to its midseason schedule.

With them doing better this season, I’d imagine they have so b**** and move some shows around to give at least one midseason show(The 100) a chance.

TTP should move to Mondays at 9pm and Star-Crossed can have the 8pm slot.

Dixie and Beauty move to Fridays when Carrie and NIKITA wrap their run.

Tuesdays and Thursdays stay the same with The 100 following Arrow.

@CS Stowbridge why?CD late in its first season iwas getting what HoD is in its THIRD season :0.4.Plus,CD will take five to seven seasons(as its 13 episode a season show) to reach syndication while HoD is now a season away and CW exsists to syndicate as many of its shows as possible and can’t wait forever to make money back they lost keeping it on the air to reach syndication If CD is in season two getting 0.3s what’ll it get in season season five to seven to reach syndication?.That said I’m a fan of both CD & HoD.

vampire diaries won’t last as long as some might think despite it being the lead show on the network. now that the contracts are up this season the cast may decide they want to pursue other jobs. particularly nina and ian as they seem to garner a lot of media attention. this happens to a lot of successful shows with young casts. look at dawsons creek it could of kept going but stopped at 6 seasons. this is also probably part of why julie created the original, now she won’t be out a job when vamps is over. as well it gives central characters like caroline a platform to move over too if she chooses.

  • Allison

Beauty and the Beast is strong in the international market and the +7 DVD viewings. it deserves to be watched. Season 2 started out full throttle excellent. Even though it has decided to waste the amazing chemistry of Jay Ryan and reduce him to a villain with co-star status, it is still an amazing portrayal. If for no other reason, it is worth saving.

  • Dave

I don’t see why The CW nd Warner Brothers can’t/won’t do anything in their power to convince the cast of sticking around for a few more seasons.

I honestly can see Vampire Diaries lasting at least 7-8 seasons minimum.

Plus, Ian and Nina aren’t the only cast memebers of the show.

Look at One Tree Hill; when Chad and Hialry left, everyone assued Season 7 was going to bomb out of the gate. The show ended up lasting an additional 2 full seasons and a short final one.

When ashow like Vampir Diaries continues to REIGN( ;) ) a the #1 show, trust me, a DEAL wil be made or people will be fired.

As they say in showbiz, the show must go on ;)

  • Brandy

    @Allison, I like BatB but it’s Live +7 aren’t that great

  • Allison

@Brandy, last week BATB was up 100% in the +7 18-49. Thethe interview Kerns gave to TV Guide was pretty dismal for what he has in store for the fans, but we keep slogging along.

  • Alan

I honestly think that TCD deserves renewal more than BATB, they have the same numbers, but TCD is on Fridays, and BATB should do at least a little bit better. The other ones I would save would be TVD, TO and TTP.

  • KS

Hello, TVBTN. Its been a long time.

Well, this season, I think CW is gonna cancel only 3 shows:

    1. Nikita
    2. Beauty and The Beast
    3. The Carrie Diaries

I guess, Reign and The Tomorrow People will make the cut, if they can maintain their usual 0.5 – 0.6 rating(B&tB and TCD were renewed last season in spite of lower ratings).

One more prediction is that, Supernatural is heading for Mondays next season.

  • Brandy

@Allison both CD & BatB get 0.5 with Live +7.On yesterday’s list HoD got 0.7 TTP gets 0.6 Live and last Live +7 list it was on got a 1.0& Reign got 0.9 and Live last week Reign got 0.7 .Even SPN,VD,Arrow & TO get well over a 1.0 in Live +7.So even a 0.5 in a week of DVr isn’t good, it’s still the least watched, least dvrd cw show along with CD & Nikita.

  • Brandy

@Allison, if the low ratings really were due to the timeslots change & competition as some fans claim, the Live +7 would be higher.Plus, while CW uses Live 7 as a factor in renewals/cancellations, they don’t make money off DVr use so ..

  • Nasir

Could it be possible that the CW are waiting to premiere T100 & SC once the Winter Olympics is over?
