EXCERPT: Magic Johnson on the significance of his Championship rings

MAGIC:  And then the five championship rings. And so --

OPRAH:  Wow.

MAGIC:  Every one of them.  And what I like --

OPRAH:  That's impressive.

MAGIC:  Yeah.  Yeah.  It is.  Because I don't wear jewelry.  So I put 'em there and --

OPRAH:  On purpose?

MAGIC:  On purpose. I lost my -- my family bought me a watch when I was junior high and I was out playing basketball and I left it there.  And I went back, it was gone.

OPRAH:  That's it.

MAGIC:  I said, that's it.  I'm never gonna wear jewelry again.

OPRAH:  Wow. So you never even wore the rings?

MAGIC:  No.  No.  No.  So I don't --

OPRAH:  Which one has -- does one have more value than the other to you?

MAGIC:  Oh, yeah.  Oh, yeah.

OPRAH:  Which one?

MAGIC:  Well, first -- you know, first when we beat the Celtics, that was it, '85.  And then '87, '88 because we went back to back.  But anytime you can beat the Celtics, that's the one.

OPRAH:  Larry Bird.

MAGIC:  Yes.

EXCERPT: Magic’s soul mate and wife Cookie

OPRAH: When you made the decision that you were ready to marry her, and now it's this many years later, 22, twenty --

COOKIE: 22.

OPRAH: 22 years later. What are you happiest about that you made that decision?

MAGIC: Oh, man. I think, you know, I just love her so much. As we sit here and to know what I've been through and, you know, just -- just to hear her talk about me gets me so emotional. You know, we've been together a long time and she's the perfect partner for me. And I think when people throw around soul mates and all that, I mean, we're for real.

COOKIE: Yeah.

MAGIC: And that we are soul mates and that we -- this is my best friend. She's an incredible mother. Incredible wife. Just changed my whole life and shaped it. And she always allowed me to be me.
