Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-November 27, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) final season 0.27
Beauty And The Beast   0.40
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled, airing remaining episodes 0.40
Hart Of Dixie      0.54
Reign :| :| :| 0.90
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.92
Arrow      1.33
The Originals      1.35
Supernatural      1.41
Vampire Diaries      1.62

The cancellation bear long ago took The Originals off his potential menu this season. The other two Fall premiere rookies Reign & The Tomorrow People will vie for one or two remaining rookie renewals with the mid-season shows The 100 & Star-Crossed.

Given the CW's recent history of premiering 3 rookie shows each Fall, in order to renew more than one more of the 2013-14 rookie group, either America's Next Top Model would need to air entirely in summer 2014, or the fourth season of Hart of Dixie would need to premiere in mid-season. The bear doesn't view either of those alternatives as being out of the question, so two renewals from that group are conceivably possible, but until Spring, the bear's not likely to be able to predict which.

Interestingly, last season the CW announced its mid-season schedule on November 8.  By that standard, they're long overdue. That schedule is likely to contain some moves central to the bear's future dining plans.

Why is The Carrie Diaries defacto canceled?

Fall premiere shows that receive a 13 episode order (veteran or rookie), and no follow on episodes are canceled. (note, Life Unexpected). There will be no announcement, as always, except the fact that it's left off the schedule announced in May.

Why is Hart Of Dixie certain to be renewed?

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’m thinking they will take 2 out of those 4 shows. I predict The 100 and Reign see a second season.

  • Lainey

My question is why does the CW continue to have NO SHOWS on Sunday nights?? Hart of Dixie would be perfect on Sundays! I also wish they would open 10pm time slots. If they want to be a realy network they need to get on it. I love HOD and hope it’s around for at least a few more seasons.

  • Rebooted

My hope is Reign and the 100. But I do like the Tomorrow People too.

    The Originals

    Vampire Diaries

    Hart of Dixie

    The 100
    NEW COMEDY (or 2)

“If all new shows were hits would the cw renew all of them”

Probably. And then the next season, they’d raise the ratings bar for renewal.

  • TJ

“The only 2 shows on CW I care about are safe Arrow & SPN. I don’t really care what happens to the rest of their shows at this point.”

Same here. I tried with TTP, but I just got so bored around the third episode that I couldn’t even finish. Anyways, I wouldn’t be surprised if all four were canceled. I don’t have much optimism for the ratings of either Reign or TTP in the spring, and I think the CW execs have learned their lesson from giving low-performing shows like TCD and BaTB a second chance…

How many of you have actually seen Star-Crossed or the 100. I love how almost all of you saying neither one has a chance and will get cancelled. What are you basing this on. I did go to Comic-Con and saw both shows. The 100 sucked, but Star-Crossed was amazing! I personally loved it!

Most of you need to just STFU with your stupid ass opinions that hold no value. Punch of stupid people just randomly shooting out their mouth with no basis.

I’m starting to think The Originals may move to Mondays at 8pm midseason to lead into Star-Crossed, with The 100 Tuesdays at 8pm. Fridays: HOD and B&TB.

To be fair, all you have to go off yourself are two pilots, and whether they were good or bad is then entirely your own opinion, which is fine but not exactly evidence of quality to anyone else.

I’m basing my opinion on less, of course. Basically the trailers I’ve seen and the descriptions of the pilots I got from friends who were at Comic-Con. Not much to go on but enough to tell me that I’m more likely to enjoy The 100 than Star-Crossed, which has been described to me as pretty much Alien Nation meets Roswell. I’ll be giving both a try but I’m thinking that The 100 has more of a chance of holding my attention. Admittedly at this point mostly because of Marie Avgeropoulos. ;)

But ‘stupid ass opinions’? Pretty certain that everyone is entitled to them, stupid ass or not.

CW can’t just take back Sun nights , it’s not that easy and they can barley survive the regular season and summer to program and worry about ratings yet some of you want to add another night? They gave up Sun nights cause they were ratings failures. They also won’t move HoD/BatB to summer either, there’s two reasons CW and broadcast networks air mostly reruns and reality/other unscripted during summer:1.they cost less to produce than scripted dramas and2.viewership is lower during summer.CW tried once having a scripted show during summer of 2007 I think 18 to Life and it was pulled after two or three episodes.Right now I think VD,SPN,Arrow,TO are certain renewals,HoD a very llikley renewal for syndication and Reign a likley renewal.I guess they could renew CD or The 100 since they’re limited series and give HoD a short final season in effort to get more shows on, but I think HoD will get a full one.

Those of you talking about the CW expanding their programming hours to 10PM or Sundays. Stop. Its not going to happen. The CW no longer controls those hours – Local Stations do. Part of the issue for the CW is that it struggles to produces shows in the 10 primetime hours it currently programs that can beat what the affiliates themselves put up and reap the ad revenue from. Syndicated repeats of Two&1/2 Men get better ratings for the affiliates at 7:30 than the CW’s prime time on Mondays & Fridays.

If FOX, which has had pretty good ratings for several years hasn’t picked up programming at 10PM, the struggling CW is never going to. Maybe Sundays, someday, but not when it only has 4 out of 10 hours currently rating a 1.0.

  • Brandy

@John K Tues is CWs best night, they won’t change anything this season.Next, yes but not now.

  • Bored Now

Can they not expand their programming into Saturday mornings? Maybe a cartoon version of Supernatural or Arrow Jr?

Kidding! Just wanted to ask my very own pointless question! ;)

  • CrystalBall

While we’re at speculating in Sunday programing, has any network thought of reducing commercials during an hour ?
They would lose some money but it may shift DVRviews to LiveViews and bring better ratings ?

  • Lukes

How can people say anything about the renewal or the cancellation of two shows that haven’t even aired? Expectations and reality are two completely different beasts! Look this season at Shield and Almost Human for example!

I think every discussion that attempts to “prove” that this or that show will be renewed or canceled has no ground whatsoever.

  • Bored Now

I don’t think anyone here is suggesting they have proof of the success or failure of either show yet to air. Most of this discussion is based on personal hopes or tastes, rather than actual evidence. Just harmless speculation.

  • Fionn518

To everyone talking about The CW struggling as a network, I was getting the impression it was one of the most successful networks in the past few years. Sorry if its a stupid question, I dont entirely know how these things work.
They have several hit series and ive read nothing but good things about how the network is doing year after year.

Personally i watch 6 shows on The CW and plan to give The 100 and Star-Crossed a shot.

Unfortunately my current top two CW shows (Reign and TTP) are in the most danger.

And one last thing, am i the only one who finds this whole Reign and TTP vs The 100 and Star-Crossed situation really entertaining :P or am I just being strange!

  • Dan W

I still cannot wrap my head around the reasoning that TCD is for sure canceled because it did not get a back 9. When you have the CW president making a statement saying it is a 13 episode season for sure and they may or may not order more, how can you say it’s canceled? I’m wondering if they would have ordered more episode if both TTP and Reign failed right out of the gate and did not get a back 9. At this point, there is no room for TCD to have a back 9…where would The 100 and Starcrossed go??? I just keep hoping it escapes death a second time and gets renewed…cannot wait to see the comments on this site haha. Hope everyone will enjoy their big helping of crow!

  • Rebooted

Does anybody find it weird that CBS is optioning a remake of the wb series charmed???

  • V

100/Star Crossed will air on Mondays in January, with no competition from Voice/Dancing until March.

Hart & Beauty will most likely move to Friday, or they preempt it until March, when 100/Star finish its 13 episodes.

  • Brandy

@V, what about competition from The Following,Blacklist ect?
