NBC is finally airing it's much-promoted The Sound of Music Live special tonight from 8-11PM. Will viewers tune in to see Carrie Underwood take on the role popularized by Julie Andrews? Or will the live special flop? Make your predictions below and give us your reasoning in the comments!

  • Gary Middleton

Huge because they’ve set it up like a sporting event that must be seen in real time.

  • DanaK

Jami, I think the appeal of seeing a musical live for the first time in 50 years will probably appeal more to older viewers, which is why I think the ratings will skew older. The demo may be around a 2.0 but the viewers may be 10 million or higher.

  • Alex

I’m really intrigued to see how this does. Its a difficult one to predict because there’s not really a whole lot to compare it to which could very well work in its favour I suppose. The plus side for NBC is surely that the only way is up from their usual Thursday night performance (which makes writing a press release tomorrow easier).

  • DenverDean

This is going to skew old. It’s opposite new episodes on the other four networks. I doubt the football audience is going to choose TSOM over CBS comedies or something else.

  • KC

    Yawn…..under 2.0

  • DryedMangoez

Definitely possible for it to skew old. But like everyone has said, Carrie’s really popular, so mid-2.0s is alright.

  • Parker

    I’ll go with a 2.3…

  • AllOfHerTw!st

Is it really only “live” in the Eastern and Central time zones? It’s too long to do the 2 versions for the east and west coasts like 30 Rock did.

  • Jamie04

Not sure where all the hype for this was, but I didn’t see it. Regardless, I won’t be watching. Not sure if anyone under 50 will. I’m looking forward to tonight’s Glee Christmas episode!

  • Russell

I predict a 2.2 and 8.5 million viewers. SOM will kill Fox’s X Factor and Glee and ABC’s Neverland. Big Bang & Millers will win 8-9 in viewers and demo. Scandal will win 10-11 (demo) while Elementary will win in viewers. 9-10 will be close among ABC, CBS and NBC.

  • Ron

Chip, your logic doesn’t make sense. This is the first time in ages something like this has been done and has nothing to do with smash or the tonys. Judging by the fact that the making of special last week got 5 million and a 1.0 I’m thinking the live show does around triple that. So a 3.0 and 14-15 million

  • Sparrow

Most definitely over 2.8 and NBC will be wetting their pants in joy over the ratings tomorrow morning lol.

  • Michael1

As long as Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, and Aziz Ansari don’t make an appearance, there’s no reason it can’t get the same 2.5 that “The Voice” got in the same time slot.

  • Jackie

I never miss Greys or Scandal. but tonight I will be DVR both of them bc I wanna see this LIVE. I mean live is so cool. If Carrie Underwood falls, trips or anyone does, then I wanna see it live!

  • Jenna

My flop-dar is going off on this one. I have a feeling that for those who do watch it, it may skew a bit older than the target demo, but that’s just my guess.

Not that it matters, but personally I won’t be watching…the promo results in an automatic eye roll for me without fail.

  • Rebecca

I’ll miss the first hour because I have to record CBS (tv can’t change channel from what’s recording) but if I like the last half of SOM I’ll try to stream the first half later. I wasn’t going to watch (normally not a fan of revivals or remakes) but I want to see if the True Blood guy can sing as Capt. VonTrapp, lol. Hoping it does well but I guessed 1.8.

  • ChipL955

Ron, I sincerely hope you are right. I would love nothing more than for the ratings to be huge. I just don’t think there’s that big an audience for it.

I remember when CBS premiered Jerry Herman’s “Mrs. Santa Claus,” starring Angela Lansbury, in the 1990s. The ratings were a terrible disappointment and, after a couple of years, CBS stopped showing it. I understand that even the DVD is out of print now. The ratings for more recent musical specials featuring stars in the demo don’t give me much more reason to be optimistic.

Of course, I also predicted that Michael J. Fox would be such a beloved star that the ratings for the premiere of his show would be enormous. I hope I am wrong again!

  • Christian

I’m going with a 3.4. I won’t be watching but I’m sure many people will be.

  • Kissan

Well I won’t be watching this cause I’m gonna watch TVD at 8, Reign at 9 and Scandal at 10. I think this will skew old, but I also think it’ll skew a little young as well cause of Carrie Underwood so I think it’ll do around a 3.0 and 12 million viewers.

  • Scandalfan

1.8- 2.2 for me between TBBT and GA i can’t see it go higher.
