Mike, are you able to watch entire Y and R episodes on YouTube? And what is wm? It might be upsetting to watch in its hey day but could be very enjoyable.

  • Mike

Mary, It just depends on what is posted and how long it gets to stay posted. Every once in awhile Sony comes through and makes them take all the old stuff on Y&R down. They actually own the rights to all of it and so they take it all down from time to time.

There are several full episodes from the 70s on there now. And there are some that are just partial.

I was watching some today that were just scenes from when Paul and Lauren were married.

The Wm. was referring to William Bell. I just abbreviated his first name.

    Thanks Mike.

Network’s don’t need to “sabotage” their series. If CBS didn’t want to air Y&R, all they would have to do is cancel it. They don’t need to hire someone who will tank the ratings or “kill” the show. Network’s don’t really need low ratings as an excuse to cancel a series (just ask fans of “CSI: Miami” or “CSI: NY” about how “low rated” those series were when CBS canceled them).

Also, the executive producers of ATWT and GL at the time of their cancellations (Chris Goutman and Ellen Wheeler, respectively) had been in their jobs for several years – in the case of Goutman, more than 10 years. So, I would doubt that CBS would dictate to Sony that they hire Jill Farren Phelps because they want her to “kill” Y&R (especially since she has never been at the helm of a series at the time of its cancellation – unless you count the single season Nickelodeon soap “Hollywood Heights” – something that the much ballyhooed Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini cannot claim).

One other thing about B&B’s ratings and those of us not understanding them.

B&B is stabilizing it’s ratings this year but B&B is the only one of the 4 shows who’s average in the 18-49 is higher now than it was at the end of the 2010-2011 season.

That season B&B averaged 585,000 and finished 5th out of 6 shows that season. Only AMC was lower than it.

B&B is averaging 655,000 now in the 18-49. That is what CBS looks at — not that it is 3rd out of 4 shows.

    Of the 4 shows Y&R was averaging 971,000 then / 813,000 now. GH averaged 749,000 then / 732,000 now. Days 672,000 then / 604,000 now.

Surprised GH’s ratings weren’t better that week, Robert&Anna reunited with Robin?! What’s the matter with viewers, maybe too busy to watch soaps getting ready for Thanksgiving.

  • jonboy

Yeah but, Mike, a drop of over 200,000 viewers is pretty drastic. I just don’t trust the accuracy of Nielsen. BTE, totally agree with old Y&R vs. new, although I’m not hating it. Those stories were more melodramatic and far more interesting.

I’m glad all the soaps have good ratings. It looks like they will make it past 9/14.It got so bad on Y&R with LML and MAB I couldn’t watch any part of the show, especially those doppleganger characters.Y&R has some new characters I just can’t watch like Tyler/Abby,Noah,Kyle,Courtney.If Victor/Jack/Nikki ever left I could see B&B moving ahead. They seemed to have transitioned to younger characters with out losing an audience. You never know until it happens but I don’t see the younger characters keeping Y&R at no 1.

  • Dianne

Mike – Thanks for the reply.
I thought the low ratings for the younger generation would affect it being renewed, since that is the desired demographic for advertisers.

As for Y&R, I don’t watch anymore but I have read a lot about the controversy surrounding a child’s death.
I felt sad even reading about this. Soaps are supposed to be an escape, and tragically although children do die in real life, it’s not something we want to see on a soap.

  • Mike

But why does no one bring up accuracy with Nielsen when they have big jumps like some of the soaps have had this last year.

Then it is all about the stories and the writing and the couples. They are the reasons that many people suddenly decided to watch.

Then when a show drops big time it is Nielsen because there is no way that many people tuned out.

Look at the ratings some shows drop 200,000 from Monday to Friday.

According to ABC’s press release GH rose big time last time. I guess we just need to throw out those numbers too because they can’t be accurate because Nielsen doesn’t know how to count.

No system is accurate 100% and none of them will ever be. There are just too many factors. Even putting a clicker in every TV, DVD, DVR, etc. that tells them every time a show is watched won’t even be accurate until they put someone in every house to tell them if the person actually sat there and watched every little bit of the show.

Just following trends on message boards and how people talk about their viewing habits, I have no doubt in my mind that 200,000 could tune out from one week to the next. I don’t know how many people I read that said they expected a big drop for Days because after Kristen left they had no desire to watch anymore.

  • Mike

It would definitely affect them if they weren’t adding 18-49 viewers. If it stagnates and drops more then yes it could very well lead to cancellation.

As to the child death thing, it has been happening for years all the way back to the 80s or 90s with the death of Laura Cudahy on All My Children. She was killed by a drunk driver too.

I wouldn’t want to see it every day but it provided some nice drama. It is just a story they don’t need to dwell on too long and keep some of the other parts of the show upbeat while dealing with it.

Don’t you just love coming on here, posting your thoughts, and being scolded by the all-knowing Mike?

  • SoapLover

I find mike’s comments very insightful

  • Joe

Congrats to b&b Gh will go up again soon with the story they have coming up!!! I’m surprised at Days though!!!

  • Mike

Joe, I was hoping Days would continue to do well after the Kristen reveal. They have so many obstacles to overcome though. Of the 4 remaining soaps, they are the 1 show that has the most alternate time slots across the country. So they face different competition all over the country.

Since we didn’t hear from NBC about them for sweeps or the week of Thanksgiving I hope it doesn’t mean that they dropped more.

  • Chrisann D

    Jonboy, yep….

  • Mike

I am not getting caught up in the childish name calling with you. Sorry if you don’t agree with what I say. That is your right to do so. I don’t state my opinion on things for you to agree with or to even like. It is the way I see things. And I thought that was the purpose of a message board. I keep my discussion of the soaps or the numbers and my opinions about them.

I have always respected the things you have had to say on this board. I only disagreed with what you had to say and did not make a personal remark about you at all.

I am sorry that I did not check with the elite of this board to have a contrary opinion to something stated here. I’ll make sure I check with you or Chrisann the next time I want to disagree with someone to see if that is okay.

  • jonboy

It just seems that nearly everytime anyone on here posts a comment you can count on Rich jumping in to contradict them. And its getting annoying.

  • jonboy

    Rich, Mike, whoever…
