November 2013 Sweep

 

ABC News’ “Good Morning America” won the 2013 November sweep in both Total Viewers (5.950 million) and Adults 25-54 (2.226 million), according to Nielsen Media Research.  Also winning the year-ago sweep, “GMA” scored its first back-to-back November sweep victories in 20 years in Total Viewers and in 21 years in Adults 25-54 – since November 1992-93 and November 1991-92, respectively.  Further, “GMA’s” November 2013 win extended its run of consecutive sweep victories to 6 straight in Total Viewers and 5 in a row in Adults 25-54.   

 

“GMA” outperformed NBC’s “Today” (5.193 million and 2.133 million) by +757,000 Total Viewers and +93,000 Adults 25-54.  “GMA” widened its margin of victory over “Today” by +62% in Total Viewers and by +210% in Adults 25-54 compared to its year-ago November sweep margins (+468,000 and +30,000, respectively).  Further, GMA’s” margins over “Today” were its largest in Total Viewers during a November 2012 sweep in more than 22 years and its biggest in Adults 25-54 in 22 years – since before the November 1991 sweep (Nielsen’s electronic database started in September 1991 and November 1991, respectively).

 

“GMA” improved on both the previous sweep (5.021 million and 1.794 million – July 2013) and the year-ago sweep (5.316 million and 2.025 million – November 2012) by double-digits in both Total Viewers (+19%/+12%, respectively) and Adults 25-54 (+24%/+10%, respectively)In fact, “GMA” delivered its most-watched sweep in more than 22 years – since before November 1991.  Additionally, the ABC morning newscast had its top news demo performance during any sweep in more than 5 years and best during a November sweep in 8 years – since February 2008 and November 2005, respectively.   

 

“GMA” nearly doubled the performance of “CBS This Morning” during the November sweep in both Total Viewers (+86%), while more than doubling in Adults 25-54 (+110%).  “GMA” beat the CBS program by its largest Total Viewer sweep advantage (2.745 million) in more than 8 years and in more than 7 years in Adults 25-54 (1.165 million) – since May 2005 and May 2006, respectively.

 

 

Week of November 25, 2013:  

 

ABC News’ “Good Morning America” was the No. 1 morning program in Total Viewers (6.211 million) and Adults 25-54 (2.283 million) for the week of November 25, 2013, according to Nielsen Media Research. Winning all 10 weeks of the season, “GMA” outperformed NBC’s “Today” (5.243 million and 2.214 million, respectively) during the week by 958,000 Total Viewers and by 69,000 Adults 25-54.  Beating the NBC program by it largest margin of the season, “GMA” increased its Total Viewer advantage year to year over the No. 2-ranked “Today” by 53% (+631,000 on w/o 11/26/12).  Additionally, GoodMorningAmerica.com on Yahoo! reached 22 million users last month. It is the No. 1 morning news website and beats Today.com by millions of users each month.

 

“GMA” grew week to week (5.919 million and 2.255 million, respectively, on w/o 11/18/13) in both Total Viewers (+5%) and Adults 25-54 (+1%), turning in its most-watched week in more than 22 years – since at least September 1991;  Nielsen’s electronic database started on September of 1991.  In addition, “GMA” improved on its Adults 25-54 audience for the 5th consecutive week to deliver its best news demo performance in nearly 5 years – since w/o 1/26/09.

 

On Wednesday (11/27/13), “GMA” scored the most-watched morning telecast of the season (6.446 million). In fact, GMA’s Monday airing stands as the top single-day morning newscasts in 6 months since “GMA’s” telecast on 5/22/13.  Further, head-to-head, “GMA” beat “Today” by 1.773 million viewers on Monday (6.446 million vs. 4.673 million) to post its largest single-day Total Viewer advantage over the NBC program in also 6 months – since 5/22/13.

 

“GMA” has ranked No. 1 every week in Total Viewers for more than 16 months (the last 67 weeks – since w/o 8/13/12). ”GMA’s” 67 consecutive weeks at the top represents its longest stretch at No. 1 in more than 22 years – since before the 1991-92 season; Nielsen’s electronic database started in September 1991.

 

In Adults 25-54, “GMA” has ranked No. 1 for the last 20 weeks, its longest news demo winning streak in more than 20 years – since w/o 2/15/93 to w/o 6/28/93 during the 1992-93 season.

 

For the 2nd consecutive week, “GMA” saw double-digit across-the-board increases over the year-ago week: Total Viewers (+17%), Adults 25-54 (+16%) and Adults 18-49 (+11%) – 5.307 million, 1.966 million and 1.432 million, respectively, on w/o 11/26/12.

 

Season to date, “GMA” stands as the No. 1 morning news program for the 2nd straight year in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54. “GMA” is leading NBC’s “Today” by 767,000 Total Viewers and 71,000 Adults 25-54.  In fact, “GMA” has widened its Total Viewer season lead over “Today” versus the same point last season by 40% (767,000 vs. 549,000) to post its largest season margin in more than 22 years – since at least the 1991-92 season; Nielsen’s electronic database started on September of 1991. 

 

Growing for the 3rd year in a row, “GMA” is up over the same point last season in both Total Viewers (+12%) and Adults 25-54 (+8%)In fact, “GMA” is seeing its largest overall season audience in more than 22 years and best Adults 25-54 performance in 6 years – since before the 1991-92 season and the 2007-08 seasons, respectively.

 

During the week, “GMA” nearly doubled the performance of “CBS This Morning” in Total Viewers (+85%), while more than doubling in Adults 25-54 (+109%) and Adults 18-49 (+101%)

 

NOTE: With Thanksgiving week, “Good Morning America” and “Today” were coded as specials on Thursday and Friday and “CBS This Morning” was coded as specials from Wednesday thru Friday.  All specials are excluded from the weekly averages.  ABC’s and NBC’s weekly averages are based on three days (Mon-Wed), while CBS’ weekly average is based on two days (Mon and Tues).
