ABC has reduced Scandal's episode order this season from 22 to 18 episodes. ABC didn't give an official reason, but this cutback is likely due to the pregnancy of star Kerry Washington.

    Good.

  • Jeff (Canada)

Yeah it’s most definitely not because of ratings. ABC is probably pretty upset that they’re losing 4 episodes.

  • Happy Endings Fan

If that means less lame episodes I’m cool with that

  • obv

well they coulda done the whole blocking/floral arrangements path like with jamie king on hart of dixie but kerry is the lead of the show so…they had to do this, she’s gonna be pretty far along come april and there’s only so much you can shoot around. this isn’t gonna hurt the show at all, it’s just 4 episodes less.

  • Jake

Scandel receives very good ratings. ABC should’ve worked something out. This is gonna hurt the show & network this season.

  • steve

@Jake the only other option would of been to write it in. Kerry is the lead she is in pretty much every scene & to write it in would be a massive mistake IMO.

How is it going to hurt the show and network exactly?

Heh, first thing I thought reading the headline was “Who’s pregnant?” No way ABC does this otherwise.

  • DonJ1973

Definitely the pregnancy. It’s probably next to impossible to hide it considering the way they shoot Washington. So it’s probably going to be 4 more weeks of extra repeats to fill the dead spots to pad 18 episodes until May.

woman always ruin the shows, that’s why women shouldn’t play lead roles, it causes the show problems.I think it’s great she is having a baby but they should release being a lead and working those hours is not good them, the show, nor the baby (when its born)

  • CrimTV

    @Zee King

    What a sexist comment

It’s fine apart from the fact that it would have only aired 48 episodes at the end of 3 seasons, when usually there’s 66+. ABC are going to want as many episodes possible for season 4.

  • Christian

OMG what is crazy is that while I was watching last night I was wondering whether they would be able to film all 22 episodes. I figured they wouldn’t be able to since Kerry is due in March and Scandal wraps in April. Bummer!

  • Shepherd

Given the short first season, this will not affect the likelihood of S.5 at all. S.5 is still all but guaranteed.

  • Zee King

i knew you will say that but its true. All my shows get ruined because the leads get pregnant then take time off etc. Men don’t do that (maybe when they go to rehab but none of the shows I watch)

  • Greg

I wonder what this means to the scheduling of the show. End earlier? Hope so. Since only 4 episodes less is too little to try to put something else there, I can see ABC doing some kind of musical chairs thing where they do special airings of Revenge, Once Upon a Time, and maybe Resurrection and Mind Games.

    Ratings says Hi !

  • Ekras

    Are they gonna cancel?

  • RJC

@rob60990: “ABC realized how bad this show is.”

There’s a troll comment if I’ve seen one. Regardless of the quality of the show, it’s ABC’s highest-rated drama and there’s no way this was done for any reason relating to quality of the show or to its ratings. As someone said earlier, ABC is probably really upset that they have to do this.

  • Greg

I would love if ABC just renewed the show for 18 episodes next season, kept it paired with Grey’s Anatomy on fall, and then split them up: Scandal airs 8 episodes on January-February and Grey’s airs 12 for the remainder of the season. It would be a nice triout for Scandal, and it would give a fantastic lead-in for at least one (probably two) new dramas on midseason.

Scandal will last for years, so ABC shouldn’t be worried that it would take much longe for the show to reach syndication.
