Even though the Cancellation Bear hasn't predicted The Good Wife as anything below a "toss up" to be canceled or renewed in at least three years (longer than the bear has been using the "toss up" designation) its crazy fans "remember" otherwise, claiming each season that "You predict it will be canceled every season and are always wrong!". Nope, it's the crazy who are  wrong.

Some of that is simple confusion. The Bubble Watch does currently predict The Good Wife will be canceled, and the difference between BW and the cancellation bear isn't always clear. For reference: different writers, different predictions, same website.

Those who aren't confused with Bubble Watch, and just remember wrong? The bear's memory is bad too, that's why he writes things down. The crazy? Apparently not.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @ Stop-Colin-Me

Either way, he’s calling a part of his readers crazy. The title is “CBS: No Matter What The Bear Predicts For ‘The Good Wife,’ Its Crazy Fans Will Claim He Predicted It would Be Canceled’

That’s not a very nice thing to tell someone, no matter how crazy they may be. Most editors and authors try to be nice, try to teach people in the comments through logic and better reasoning and engaging through friendly posts. He opts for the personal attack-alternative, in the headline even, and doesn’t even provide a single link of proof to a comment or person that supposedly did what he is talking about.

    @ Jeff (Canada)

Listen, dude. I’m not a crazy fan. I just think the editors of this site could stand to be less arrogant and stop insulting their faithful readers at every turn. This is not exclusive to The Good Wife, they do this all the time. Bill Gorman, especially. It’s petty and it’s unprofessional.

  • CBSviewer

Sorry but I don’t understand why CSI is not certain to be Renewed. It’s one of the only 10PM Drama able to get a 2.0. Plus Ted Danson signed throught season 15.

  • TV Viewer

I think The Good Wife will be renewed because of A) It’s a show that the critics love, it’s on many ’10 Best shows of 2013′ lists. B) It has a good excuse for lousy ratings so far in the season–on the East coast at least, football games running overtime so the show starts later than 9:30. A person has to be a real fan of the show to turn on CBS at 9:30 and watch the Amazing Race in order to view The Good Wife from the actual start time.

  • Mary

I think Gerry has a point. The confusion comes from the site posting things like “CBS will cancell one of these shows” and list TGW. So, really, they have predicted cancellation, just not on the table.

  • Ultima

    @Jamey
the editors of this site are so rude to its readers

Yeah! Crazy, deluded commenters are people too!

    Rabble, rabble, rabble!

    ;)

  • Christian

    @ TV Viewer

Instead of other people (you know who you are) giving you flaming and hating comments, I’m going to tell you this in a nice manner, which I’ve experienced to be unusual on this site.

The critics can love a show as much as they want, but it doesn’t generate revenue. Granted, it can create buzz, but if that buzz doesn’t statistically turn into higher revenue, then the show will still be cancelled. Always remember that TV is a brutal business, where money comes before integrity for many of the networks (which explains why so many shows don’t get a proper series finale).

The same goes with timeslot. Even if it’s 6 hours delayed, if it doesn’t generate revenue, it will be cancelled. Granted, if it gets hours delayed, they might consider switching timeslot, but getting poor ratings while running against sports or a major event will never (sadly) be a reason to renew a show.

It has a good excuse for lousy ratings so far in the season–on the East coast at least, football games running overtime so the show starts later than 9:30

In the weeks in which CBS has had an NFL doubleheader (pushing The Good Wife back until after 9:30pm for ~75% of the country), the ratings are up significantly.

    Singleheader weeks – 1.5, 1.2, 1.4, 1.4, 1.3

    Doubleheader weeks – 1.6, 1.4, 1.6, 1.7, 1.6

A person has to be a real fan of the show to turn on CBS at 9:30 and watch the Amazing Race in order to view The Good Wife from the actual start time.

Or you could just take ten seconds and look up the actual start time online…

    @ christian

i’ve seen tv viewer around on here for some time, so it stands to reason he/she knows that ratings are the primary focus of the networks. but certainly each factor mentioned is taken into consideration when comparing shows that are within a point or two in the demo (mentalist, for example).

  • Trisha

I actually think its people like Christian and Erin who are being overly sensitive and rude. The comment was clearly not directed toward you unless you’ve made accusations against him in the past. Also this is their website and humor has always been a part of thi articles, so if you dislike that and you want “professionalism” then go somewhere else instead of clogging the comments section with your whining.

  • Christian

    @ Trisha

The authors here have been repeatedly rude towards people, this isn’t the first time and it probably won’t be the last. This isn’t an isolated incident.

Maybe you can take your comment, which is actually whining about us, and go learn that being rude is actually not that funny in our world. People in general don’t appreciate rude people, and this is no exception. Rude or otherwise negatively charged people are simply not that appreciated by society, no matter how funny it may be to you.

  • MARTY

the non football weeks for mentalist and goodwife I believe are lower than bluebloods and Hawaii 5-0, bill I don’t see how you put up with it. keep up the good work

  • EllieMae

I like the Mentalist new feel don’t cancel!!!
    – Don’t know why its in danger of cancellation when it wins its time slot and gets 9mil+ viewers?

  • MARTY

EllieMae even with the last to weeks it is probably the lowest rated or next to last show on cbs and it is not cbs owned

  • Bad Wolf

    @EllieMae

For people like you and me, 9+ million viewers matter, but advertisers and thus networks absolutely don’t care about it, because they’re all about adults 18-49 (don’t ask me why, I think the explanation has already been given here but it still felt so silly to me that I’ve forgotten it). Plus, extra episodes of The Mentalist don’t generate any profits for CBS, since they don’t own the show. Winning its timeslot is also meaningless, ask the Ghost Whisperer fans !

  • MARTY

EllieMae and bad wolf, if there is a hope, it would be that the mentalist keeps up with these ratings and warner gives its cw partner cbs a great deal on rights fees for another year of episodes.

  • Randy

    Looks like Christian is crazy…

  • Joseph A

Dude , There Is Not a Chance In Heck ! That The Good Wife Gets Canceled !

The Good Wife is an award winning gem of CBS that gets mentioned in every single earnings call by the only person at the network that matters ,, LES MOONVES ,,

The show gets at least one more season if not 2 !

  • Dan

Well Bubble watch goes by an overall look. You look at a show and you say realistically will this thing be a goner or renewed. This index goes by relative ratings (especially compared to other shows) Thats the difference.

Bubble watch is basically an either or, and Ironically Theres very little middle ground (bubble series) A lot of shows on the Cancellation predicted list will probably get renewed (The Goldbergs, Parenthood, Nashville)

Thats why on bubble watch The Good Wife has cancellation predicted because more than likely by a realistic persons standpoint the drama will be more likely cancelled then renewed but theres no guarantee for cancellation. I agree with the fact that it will be gone and CBS will wipe out both Sunday dramas.

The Good Wife only has syndication and maybe awards going for it but that doesn’t matter anymore. Any other network would give it a short final season (And CBS still might) but we have to assume since its CBS and they don’t do that with any drama (Medium was an exception though it was mercifully cut form 22 to 13 eps making it cancelled), So it will be cancelled with a slight chance of a final midseason order. Then again its CBS.

People whining about this site now?
Can’t handle harsh comments calling you out on your stupidity?
Don’t comment here or just don’t come to the site. :D
