Even though the Cancellation Bear hasn't predicted The Good Wife as anything below a "toss up" to be canceled or renewed in at least three years (longer than the bear has been using the "toss up" designation) its crazy fans "remember" otherwise, claiming each season that "You predict it will be canceled every season and are always wrong!". Nope, it's the crazy who are  wrong.

Some of that is simple confusion. The Bubble Watch does currently predict The Good Wife will be canceled, and the difference between BW and the cancellation bear isn't always clear. For reference: different writers, different predictions, same website.

Those who aren't confused with Bubble Watch, and just remember wrong? The bear's memory is bad too, that's why he writes things down. The crazy? Apparently not.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    As long as Elementary continues, I don’t care if TGW (a vastly overrated soap) or TM (a procedural long past its end date) are cancelled.

  • KJ Styles

    I think The Good Wife’s fate lies in how well Intelligence does. If it bombs then it’ll probably be renewed, if it’s a hit, then Good Wife is in jeopardy. I think The Mentalist is done regardless. They should have saved the Red John finale until the actual season/series finale. Now it comes off as an entirely different show.

  • MARTY

    cbs does not cancel 2nd yr dramas, shark and Jericho were the last 2 they did, shark had 38 episodes Jericho 29, both less than 2 full yrs. elementary will have 48. simple elementary renewed

  • Joy

    I also just started tuning in this season and I’m 28, well within the target demographic so I hope it is not cancelled. That would be tragic since it is one of only a few shows worth watching on Network TV right now.
    All the previous seasons are on both HULUPLUS and AMAZON PRIME. Both are 8 bucks a month!

  • RS

    Don’t consider “crazy” a pejorative when it comes to fandom. Crazy fans are great. In 1968 “crazy” fans saved a little show with a write-in campaign that gave it a 3rd (and necessary at the time for syndication) season. The show went on to syndication heaven. Little show – Star Trek. Chuck and Fringe crazy fans got those shows extra seasons that the ratings didn’t predict they deserved. And, arguably the craziest of current fandoms, Supernatural fans (I can say that; I’m one,)have kept the show alive for nine seasons on a net-let almost no one knows exists. I certainly didn’t until I saw SPN reruns on a TNT marathon, and hunted the CW down.

  • Diane

    First, the writer did not try to insult TGW fans, he merely pointed out what they have said he did, when he did not. Those are crazy fans, who don’t read the whole line.

    I’ve watched the Good Wife from the start and I was about to give up this year, but it has gotten better. Is it in time to save it for a long term deal, I don’t think so, but if it came down to TGW or Mentalist, which I also watch, I think its the Mentalist that will get the boot. Thats not to say I would be shocked if TGW also got booted.

    As for all the H50 haters, who just read into what their opinions are and not what is exactly happening. H50 is doing well on Friday, its a good fit, and its ratings have been consistent, no matter what the other networks throw at them. So I am pleased, time to start eating some crow, and move on haters.

  • Dan

    @Omabin – No matter how much of a ratings surge The Mentalist has it will still be cancelled CBS always cancels at least 1 or 2 veterans. If only 1 then just mentalist if 2 than Mentalist and Good Wife. Blue bloods is safe as is Hawaii 5-0. Without Intelligence even premiering its likely dead. CBS hasn’t renewed a midseason drama since The Unit and even if Intellience manges to pull above a 2.0 I doubt it will get renewed, CBS will just figure something else for the night next season.

  • Linda E.

    Labelling fans who are fighting for the survival of a quality program like
    TGW, as crazy, is lousy. TGW deserves to be renewed.

  • Ultima

    @Billy Martins
    First needs to get rid of their aging shows like … NCIS

    You think that CBS should cancel their highest rated drama? :roll:

  • Cyndy

    The Mentalist deserves another year. CBS buried
    it on Sunday along with The Good Wife. The numbers
    are sound considering the number of times
    it has aired behind time due to football.

  • omabin

    @Dan,

    Your idea that CBS will always do the same no matter what is miscontructed. According to that logic, they would have never expanded to 4 hours of comedy this season.

    For the record, I still think The Mentalist will be cancelled. But if it keeps inching up (and that’s a big if which I don’t think will happen) it may survive. I am certain CBS would prefer to keep the show there and keep CSI/Elementary on weekdays than to move one of these shows there (and if the mentalist does keep up, it would mean it would be pulling comparable ratings to these shows anyway) and premiere a new drama at 10pm. They would be better off canceling the comedies in that case, which they don’t even own (as The Mentalist).

    Also, I don’t agree that Blue Bloods > The Good Wife. The Good Wife has a ridiculous syndication deal and until I see a similar one from Blue Bloods, I won’t bet on its cancellation just yet. In addition, I don’t imagine CBS wishing to move two veterans to Sundays on the same year. You talk so much about their stability and what they do and don’t do and moving 2 shows to a new night at the same year is very unCBS like, wouldn’t you say?

    Finally, you are fooling yourself if you believe that CBS would pass up on Intelligence if it does higher than 2.0. Why would they? That would certainly be >100% their drama average by then. The fact that they haven’t renewed a midseason drama since god knows when only has to do with the fact that those midseason dramas failed. If Intelligence fails, it will be cancelled as well, sure. But if it does >2.0 (>100% drama average), that’s no fail, hence it will be renewed.

  • AdWhois

    Hope it does get cancelled. Such an unrealistic show that for some reason the fans think is realistic. Plus it’s been at the bottom of the renew-cancel index for every season yet it still gets renewed…

  • gerry

    @adwhois

    since the headline here is all about TGW never being below a toss up of the renewal/cancel index, it all seems to have gone over your head (much like TGW itself, i’d imagine).

    i’d be curious to know some of the ‘realistic’ television you’re watching. (insert eye roll here.)

  • abc

    This is just my teeny tiny opinion as a newbie just tuning in this season….

    I was hooked in to sample the show from seeing the promos aired showing the intensity of pivotal plot changes over the fall (i’m trying to keep things spoiler free with my wording for other potential newbies!)

    As a viewer who hasn’t seen the first 4 seasons, it appeared to me that the drama was experiencing some kind of fresh start and new direction.
    If this change was intended to grab in new viewers, as far as i’m concerned it worked, because i’m now hooked.

    I think this show certainly has a few good seasons left in it. I’d like to think it’s only at it’s halfway point in it’s run as i’m loving the show and now starting to watch previous seasons to “catch up”.

    I also feel it desperately needs to be airing on any other night but Sunday. But regardless, i’m going to continue being a “crazy fan” of the show! :)

  • Ultima

    @AdWhois
    Plus it’s been at the bottom of the renew-cancel index for every season yet it still gets renewed…

    For all the people who were freaking out before, THIS is the kind of person the headline was directed at!

    Some people just don’t want to accept reality, there’s nothing wrong with calling those people crazy; in fact, that’s why we have the word “crazy!”

  • zilla-rilla

    The writers of the show have stated they have a 7 season story arc for the show planned.
    I hope to GOD that it gets to see 2 more seasons. Especially if the quality is anywhere near what this season has been. Plus a 2 million dollar an episode syndication deal from multi-revenue whatever they call it has to be enticing for them.
    How much does one estimate an episode of the show costs to produce? Do we think they are recouping their costs with this 2 million alone?

  • Medea

    @ Jamey This site is about ratings, it is not a fansite and if they only posted numbers without any snarky headlines, where would be the fun? They have to spice it up a bit.
