Even though the Cancellation Bear hasn't predicted The Good Wife as anything below a "toss up" to be canceled or renewed in at least three years (longer than the bear has been using the "toss up" designation) its crazy fans "remember" otherwise, claiming each season that "You predict it will be canceled every season and are always wrong!". Nope, it's the crazy who are  wrong.

Some of that is simple confusion. The Bubble Watch does currently predict The Good Wife will be canceled, and the difference between BW and the cancellation bear isn't always clear. For reference: different writers, different predictions, same website.

Those who aren't confused with Bubble Watch, and just remember wrong? The bear's memory is bad too, that's why he writes things down. The crazy? Apparently not.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Possible 2014-15 Schedule:

    MONDAY
    8:00 – The Millers
    8:30 – 2 Broke Girls
    9:00 – NEW COMEDY
    9:30 – Mom
    10:00 – NEW DRAMA

    TUESDAY
    8:00 – NCIS
    9:00 – NCIS: Los Angeles
    10:00 – Person of Interest

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 – Survivor
    9:00 – Criminal Minds
    10:00 – CSI

    THURSDAY
    8:00 – The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 – NEW COMEDY
    9:00 – The Crazy Ones
    9:30 – Two and a Half Men
    10:00 – NEW DRAMA

    FRIDAY
    8:00 – NEW DRAMA / Undercover Boss
    9:00 – Hawaii Five-0
    10:00 – Blue Bloods

    SUNDAY
    8:00 – The Amazing Race
    9:00 – Elementary
    10:00 – The Good Wife

    Keep in mind that CBS doesn’t usually moves more than 2 Dramas (I expect Elementary and TGW to move) and 1 Comedy (The Millers). I also think all the Thursday Comedy block will be Renewed. CBS could launch two Comedies and three Dramas in the Fall.

    When should we expect an announcement on what shows are renewed?

  • Joseph A

    @zilla-rilla

    Given how much very open support that The Good Wife gets from the key decision maker at CBS , it would be a massive surprise if the show did not get to complete the 7 seasons already planned.

  • Hel-luhr

    @Diane

    Unfortunately, both interpretations are equally valid.

  • JSG

    @Matt M

    Elementary’s competition on other networks is irrelevant. It only matters how it’s doing relative to the other shows on its network. It has better ratings than The Good Wife and The Mentalist (you can’t cherry pick one or two episodes–the entire season average is what matters). And the fact that it needs two more seasons for syndication is a feature, not a bug. Barring catastrophic ratings (which are not happening), CBS will find a way to keep it on the air for two more seasons. The Mentalist and The Good Wife already have syndication deals, and aging shows tend to be more expensive. And they have worse ratings, so they would definitely be first in line to get the axe.

    @Joe

    In the spring. I think last year TGW and like a dozen other CBS shows were renewed in late March. Those were pretty early renewals. I’d say April/May are good estimates. And of course, the very latest info on renewal/cancellation is at the Upfronts in May.

    @Jim
    <<Thank you for calling out the Good Wife’s obnoxious fans! They have <<convinced me to never check it out (plus the fact it’s on cbs indicates <<it’s probably trash).

    From 1 Jim to another – Nothing personal, but judging from your post, you are clueless. To wit:
    – You won't checkout a show because you consider some its fans obnoxious.
    – You think it's probably trash because it's on CBS

    Here's how trashy it is:

    Best TV series, drama

    "Breaking Bad"

    "Downton Abbey"

    "The Goodwife"

    "House of Cards"

    "Masters of Sex

    Best Actress in a TV series, drama

    Julianna Margulies – "The Good Wife"

    Tatiana Maslany – "Orphan Black"

    Taylor Schilling – "Orange is the New Black"

    Kerry Washington – "Scandal"

    Robin Wright – "House of Cards"

    Best Supporting Actor in a series, mini-series or TV movie

    Josh Charles – "The Good Wife"

    Rob Lowe- "Behind the Candelabra"

    Aaron Paul – "Breaking Bad"

    Corey Stoll – "House of Cards"

    Jon Voight -" Ray Donovan"

    When should we expect an announcement on what shows are renewed?

    May.

  • Joseph A

    @The Real Jim

    Yup , and with 3 , yea 3 New Golden Globe nominees there is not a chance in heck that The Good Wife is seeing its last season. What you can expect is that The Good Wife, The Big Bang Theory, and the Masters of Sex, will be high lighted at the next CBS Earnings Call of what the network is doing right.

  • Isobel

    As well as golden globe nominations, Mathew Goode has also been cast for the fifth season, I don’t think they cast people if they aren’t going to have a fifth season

  • MARTY

    isobel it is in its 5th season also they sign actors for roles of 3 and 4 episodes means nothing if ratings don’t improve

  • TV Viewer

    @Ultima

    On March 27, 2013 CBS announced the shows that they were going to renew. The programs not mentioned in March did not get a last minute save.
    In March 2012 CBS also announced the programs they were going to renew that year.

    CBS does tend to renew their programs in March and cancel the rest in May.

  • TV Viewer

    The exact date that CBS renewed their shows in 2012 was Wednesday March 14, 2012.

    March 2014 is the month CBS tends to give out good and bad news to their programs.

  • ron

    @Marty as usual you overstate, or should I say that your comments are ridiculious. Even as The Good Wife has weathered the late starts due to football, it has maintained its numbers (which are not the lowest or next to lowest} It has just been nominated by the Golden Globe as the best drama { the only broadcast ahow so honored} and it also received two nominations for its two stars. Marty, you need to let this one go because it WILL NOT BE CANCELLED, not this year or the following year.

  • ron

    @ADWhois The fact that this site continues to put The Good Wife in the will be cancelled slot, has no effect whatsoever on its renewal every year. It just goes to show that this site hasn’t got a clue on what the network bosses will due.

  • TV Viewer

    March is the month that CBS tends to give out good and, (for all intents and purposes), bad news to their shows.

  • Ultima

    @TV Viewer
    On March 27, 2013 CBS announced the shows that they were going to renew. The programs not mentioned in March did not get a last minute save.
    In March 2012 CBS also announced the programs they were going to renew that year.

    While there may not have been any May renewals last season, in May 2012 they renewed three shows (CSI New York, Two and a Half Men, Rules of Engagement).

  • TV Viewer

    @Ultima

    Thank you for telling me about CBS’s three renwals in May 2012.
    Also in May 13, 2012; CBS cancelled Unforgettable and then they uncancelled it on June 29, 2012.

  • KevynLA

    This post was hilarious! I do think that with the good wife’s new golden globe nominations, they have a chance at another season.

  • omabin

    @Ultima,

    They’ve also renewed Criminal Minds in May last year if I am not mistaken.
