Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-December 8, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) final season 0.32
Beauty And The Beast   0.41
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled, airing remaining episodes 0.41
Hart Of Dixie      0.54
Reign :| :| :| 0.89
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.92

Supernatural      1.43
Vampire Diaries      1.60

To those who'll claim the cancellation bear has run out of CW topics just before the holiday lull begins, the bear pleads "guilty as charged"!

The CW is up season to season among adults 18-49. Not only is that a milestone for them, it's a big deal for any US broadcast network.

Yet, even with that success, some desperate fans can still find ways to justify the renewal of a show like Beauty & The Beast which is averaging just a 0.30 adults 18-49 rating this Fall, vs. a 0.68 adults 18-49 rating last Fall, down 56%.

Desperation, it's the mother of invention! And Fan Excuse Bingo!

Why is The Carrie Diaries defacto canceled?

Fall premiere shows that receive a 13 episode order (veteran or rookie), and no follow on episodes are canceled (see Life Unexpected). There will be no announcement, as always, except the fact that it's left off the 2014-15 schedule announced in May.

Why is Hart Of Dixie certain to be renewed?

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’ve been hanging on with Beauty and the Beast, though I’m usually playing catch-up on my DVR. It’s not so bad of a show, but it has its issues, and definitely is at my bottom rung of shows I watch. I hope Kristen Kreuk finds a good series after this.

  • rocky

Just looking at Jay Ryan for an hour each week is worth rrenewal. Simply irresistible!

  • Tom

To paraphrase Dorothy Parker: As an actress, Kristen Kreuk runs the “gamut of emotions from A to B.” The original television version of BATB survived largely because Linda Hamilton was skilled actress who could elevate some fairly mediocre scripts. In contrast, Ms. Kreuk turns in a completely unconvincing performance. She needs to stick to doing those Neutrogena ads.

It looks like the “Curse of Gossip Girl” is finally being lifted from the CW!

They premiered Gossip Girl years ago to decent ratings, and suddenly it seems like every new show on the network was about teenage or early 20s girls and their romantic entanglements. That’s a really narrow focus for one show, much less an entire network!

Also, the powers in charge consistently ignored the fact that shows like Smallville and Supernatural, which bucked the CW trend, were doing better than the rest of their schedule.

Now it appears that the CW is gettin smart and programming a (kind of) wider range of shows. Tuesday-Thursday is looking good for them. That leaves Monday and Friday.

If it were me, I’d shuffle Heart of Dixie to Friday to die and add some new, broader appeal shows on Monday. Maybe they could go back to some sitcoms (which really got their network jump-started back in the day as the WB).

  • Lena

@ Cassie- Not true: for instance Nina Lisandrello is a good actress who hasn’t had much of a chance in the show. Don’t think the cast is the problem here, but the writing.

Never quite seen a show that wastes its possibility for mythological development (and use of old resources that work extremely well for these types of shows) as BATB. IMHO the two women running BATB are two sad middle aged women that think girls only want to see a young woman running around NYC doing everything possible to save her dangerous boyfriend. Let’s face it: Cat has put her whole life behind because of a beast boyfriend that sometimes gets violent (and physically abusive) and behave at times like a stupid jock. Gimme a break! We should be able to see both the beauty and the beast being transformed by the love they both feel for each other, and not witness an uncommon couple struggling with ordinary couple’s problems (will we have kids? / oh, you didn’t called me Friday night / yada yada yada). We have thousands of shows like that already. Plus if they’re together already, they should totally drop the “he loves me/he loves me not” because that is so tiresome.

The premise for the show is great. The way it was developed… SAD. Have watched it until now but really don’t give a damn if it gets cancelled. Feel sorry for the cast, and I hope the producers never get a job again based on their inability to turn it into a success given that they have a good cast that could help them tell a much better story. The only thing they really needed to do to turn this into a great show was to WATCH the 87 series and copy whatever worked in there.

  • Me

I have to agree. I had high hopes for B&TB when it premiered but couldn’t stand another episode as the first season progressed. Terrible writing, mediocre performances and senseless storylines. Good riddance!
Mark Pedowitz was a really good choice to lift the Dawn Ostroff girly curse. Who would’ve though that the solution was a fair injection of testosterone. :)

  • Ed B

Kristin Kreuk is amazing and BATB is actually very entertaining. It’s better than a lot of CW shows actually. The show may not do as well live but it does really well online, better than a lot of CW shows. So for that reason it should be renewed.
Also the show is on a very competitive night and it’s very steady and has a weak lead-in. I’m sure if it was on another night it would perform better. Another thing, the show is pretty cheap to produce and is like the only CBS show on the CW. Also it has a big online fanbase. Last year we won the PCAs and hopefully we’ll win this next PCAs next month.

  • gerry

BATB should have been cancelled last year. TCD was pulling .4-.5 on the same night.

  • DonnaT

I’d ax B&TB in a heartbeat and if The CW does renew TCD for another short season I’d air it in the summer. With 4 shows finally at 1.0 or above and HoD nearly guaranteed to get the Nikita treatment (renewed for S4, # episodes to be determined) and two solid mid level performers, plus two dramas yet to premiere, B&TB is just taking up a valuable space on The CW 2014-2015 schedule. I don’t care how cheap it is for The CW to acquire it; The CW is on a roll and renewing B&TB for S3 would be taking a step backwards.

BATB renewed for another season? No way, Jose!

  • Cheryl

cancel everything and give Supernatural their budget.

  • Percysowner

@Tom To paraphrase Dorothy Parker: As an actress, Kristen Kreuk runs the “gamut of emotions from A to B The great irony of that line is that it was written about Kathryn Hepburn who managed to rise above one bad performance. Ms Kruek is a lovely woman, but I don’t think she will ever manage Kathryn Hepburn heights, although I’m willing to be proven wrong.

  • Lena

LOL! Ed B just used almost ALL the fan excuse bingo excuses! LOL! Bear probably laughs when reading that.

And I didn’t want to be the one saying it, but Kristin Kreuk is a very ordinary actress. The rest of the cast is good.

  • Tom

    @ DonnaT

When it comes to renewing BATB, “cheap” might be a higher priority for the CW than ratings. The CW “rebooted” BATB this season because they knew it wasn’t working. So, I assume that the show was renewed for money reasons. Now that they’re stuck with 44 episodes, I don’t see why the CW executives wouldn’t bankroll another season just to cash in on a short syndication, overseas sales, Netflix revenue, etc. I hope I’m wrong though.

  • Ed B

Have you even seen the scene where Cat shot Vincent in the last episode?
Kristin Kreuk is very underrated. She is a very moving actress. I’ve been following her spice 2001 and she was the best thing about Smallville and is the best thing about BATB. Just because a bitter hater says something negative doesnt mean it’s a fact.

  • Brandy

Why do people want only genre/sci/fantasy /make skewing/futuristic shows on CW?A sucsessful network has more than one type of show /targets more than one group of viewers and has variety and diversity in programming to attract as many viewers as possible. You all forget how sucsessful girly shows GG /90210 were for a few seasons.
Personally, I hope Painted Girls,The Perfectionist,The revengers get picked up for next year cause they sound good and the rest of thier in delopment stuff sounds stupid and awful.Mark Pedowitz said he wouldn’t completely give up the young women demo and that ,even today, is what sells ads.If he was going to abandon all girly shows,he would’ve cancelled HoD & CD last season and not even picked up CD or Reign and not have The Revengers,Painted Girls,The Perfectionists,Jane the Virgin in development .
Personally, I think the only good shows worth watching on CW are:ANTM,CD,HoD,VD,Reign,TO,BatB.

  • Dave

“The CW is on a roll and renewing B&TB for S3 would be taking a step backwards.”

    THIS!! :D

  • Josh

The story isn’t that interesting anymore. Jay Ryan is quite good in portraying the role- the transition from sweet & caring Vincent to the other who acts like an idiot. Kristin Kreuk gives an ok performance. Just my opinion. She has this one type of acting. Not sure of the term. lol

  • Richard

They may have lifted the Gossip Girl curse, but they have to make sure they don’t go the other way, and only fill the CW with supernatural/superhero/genre shows.

I still don’t understand why the Carrie Diaries is de facto cancelled. I thought it was always meant to be 13 episodes per season?

  • david

@Brandy because scifi shows and super herreo shows get the CW good ratings. The shows that get the CW good ratings are not The Carrie Diaries or Beauty and the Beast, by the way i am a fan of Beauty and the Beast as well but a .3 is not exceptable for them now. They know what really works for them that’s is why i think they will piick up the Flash and the Super Natural spinn off next year and hopefully fix Mondays. BATB and TCD shold be canciled because they both get .3 ratings. I do think they should try sitcoms though seeing as Who’s Line worked for them. I think thats why they gotten that Cannadian sitcom Seed to see how it would do and i watched the first episodce and it was good.
