Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-December 8, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita (F) final season 0.32
Beauty And The Beast   0.41
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled, airing remaining episodes 0.41
Hart Of Dixie      0.54
Reign :| :| :| 0.89
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.92
The Originals      1.36
Arrow      1.37
Supernatural      1.43
Vampire Diaries      1.60

To those who'll claim the cancellation bear has run out of CW topics just before the holiday lull begins, the bear pleads "guilty as charged"!

The CW is up season to season among adults 18-49. Not only is that a milestone for them, it's a big deal for any US broadcast network.

Yet, even with that success, some desperate fans can still find ways to justify the renewal of a show like Beauty & The Beast which is averaging just a 0.30 adults 18-49 rating this Fall, vs. a 0.68 adults 18-49 rating last Fall, down 56%.

Desperation, it's the mother of invention! And Fan Excuse Bingo!

Why is The Carrie Diaries defacto canceled?

Fall premiere shows that receive a 13 episode order (veteran or rookie), and no follow on episodes are canceled (see Life Unexpected). There will be no announcement, as always, except the fact that it's left off the 2014-15 schedule announced in May.

Why is Hart Of Dixie certain to be renewed?

With three seasons complete, the CW syndication gods will demand that Hart Of Dixie be renewed for a fourth season. Maybe it'll be a short one like Nikita's, or maybe not. The bear doesn't get into predicting episode orders.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

B&TB does actually have one thing going for it – The Friday Slot – CW has very little to stick in there – they don’t HAVE to put anything in there – but they likely want to do something that will get more than the 0.1 they’d get for a re-run….. so It’s a VERY small possibility, but still possible that B&TB could get picked up (it’s half way to syndication already which is why they’d pick this over launching a new low budget) for another year.

  • Charmed

TCD was moved to Friday, with no high rated show to attract new viewers, when it was already pulling 0.4, so what the CW expect? They had the chance to cancel it, but didn’t, and obviously they didn’t expect it to pull a miracle on Friday, of all days, so it seems to me that there’s another reason for renewal, and that just might save it again.

  • Jason

Won’t lie–I find Beauty and the Beast quite interesting and enjoyable. Nothing groundbreaking, but I think the whole twist on what a beast is somewhat clever. I would have never watched it if there was a cartoon-ish beast running around. Clearly, the ratings are woeful, though.

Then again, I enjoyed Cult, Ringer, and Life Unexpected, so…

  • Dollface

@Tom I actually agree with you. While I wish her nothing but the best she is not a strong enough actress to lead in any series. She should stick to supporting roles. Every show and movie I have seen her in she has struggled (and I am being nice here) to becomethe character she was playing. I am sure she is a perfectlly nice person but she is not a leading lady.

  • AO

I agree that in an ideal world the CW would retain a good mixture of genre and non-genre shows, but they’ve been crashing and burning until this year. The CW needs to ride whatever genre(s) work, turn themselves around, and then in a couple of years they can look to diversify again.

  • Sue

CW already has many series targeted to teenage. they ranged from action, sic-fi, sex, mythology etc. Let BatB be; since it has ALL that, it targets to much older audience and it has REAL relationships (love interest AND friendship) instead of just hormone raging based relationship where one fall in and out of love so easily with everybody.

  • Ashley

    My Fall predictions:

    9pm-SPN spinoff

    9pm-New Show

    8pm-Vampire Diaries

    8pm-Hart of Dixie
    9pm-Top Model/100 or Star-Crossed

Notes: Keep Tuesday (their best day) and Thursday (nothing works big after VD but Reign at least pairs well thematically), fix Monday with a new genre spin-off night, use the Arrow lead-in to try again, ship HoD to Friday to burn off with Top Model and a 13-ep order of whatever show does better this spring

  • margot

BATB? Poor show with bad actors, look like pieces of wood, Jay R. is a mediocre actor and has no charisma, Kristin K. always has the same expression on his face like a doll. delete!

  • Kate

Short answer: you wouldn’t. If BATB doesn’t have at least a few 0.2s in the spring I’ll be shocked. They should burn off the episodes through the Olympics and premiere one of their new shows in its spot. Or move HOD to 9pm since it’s steady and premiere a new show Monday @ 8pm.

  • Lisa

LOVE Beauty and the Beast and would follow it to any night, any time! I do wish it was paired with a better show on the CW schedule. Never did think HOD and BATB made much sense together. BATB and the 100s, now that sounds interesting.

“@Tom I actually agree with you. While I wish her nothing but the best she is not a strong enough actress to lead in any series. She should stick to supporting roles. Um whatever dude. 90% of Kristin Kreuk’s roles are leading roles ever since she came onto to the scene in 2001. People keep hiring her in leading roles so she must be doing something right. Fool!

  • Mina

Kristin is best at playing the girlfriend. Someone who guys fight over. She can’t lead because she lacks range. She looks as if she’s cracking up in every scene. How she got the lead is beyond me. Model? yes, actress? no. Two things she can do well is look pretty and look pretty crying. Life is kind to pretty people, that’s for sure.

Look at Nicole from Sleepy Hollow, she’s even shorter than Kristin but much more believable as a cop because she actually has range. She’s not just a pretty face.

Writing is embarrassingly awful. So awful. Cancel! But they won’t, cause it’s probably making money.

One thing they did right was having a diverse cast. I think that helped with selling into so many markets.

  • Mina

Let me just add that her fragile eggshell looks demand that she plays the pretty victim. Writers just love to put her in the hospital to play the sympathy card.. in Smallville, in this show, in her indi movies.. she ends up in the hospital, a lot.

  • iSayso

    Aah, hello . . . . . . . BatB is de facto canceled.

    Thank you, de facto! :D

  • Melody

@Brandy – “Even though they’re doing well, VD,Arrow,SPN,TO will fade out ,just like GG,90210.” If Supernatural hasn’t faded after 9 years, what makes you think it will? Also, please learn to put spaces after your periods and commas. It’s very difficult to read and just bad punctuation.

  • Refrain

Personally I think the CW needs to get tough with some shows, and not bother renewing rookie shows that are struggling. They’ve been a bit too nice with some shows that really shouldn’t of been given a second season because well, the numbers speak for themselves. Any show that has done decidedly average during its first season is hardly going to break any records during season 2.

On the current list I would renew Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Arrow, The Originals, and one of the two shows out of Reign or Tommorow People(Depending on how either show does by seasons end).

  • Melody

The fun of this site, predicting. So, I’m going to have a little fun and do some predicting. Here it is:
    CW Midseason Schedule
    8pm-Hart of Dixie

    9pm-The Tomorrow People

    8pm-Vampire Diaries
    9pm-The 100

    9pm-Beauty and the Beast

  • Brandy

@CS Stwobridge, the CW actually premieres five new shows at least a season, just usually three in fall two at Midseason.
@ SnowLepard, yes 90210 & GG DID do well:ratings, internationally,DVr,online viewing,GG was big on social media. Both were nominated for and won tons of awards and not just Teen Choice or People AWrds.GG was sold into syndication. If GG & 90210 hadn’t done well in ratings, they wouldn’t have lasted 5-6 years.GG,90210& VD are CWs flagship shows.90210 has the third highest series premiere ever on CW in seven seasons. ,only beaten by VD & Arrow.GG has its own fashion line and actually influenced tourism in NY and 90210 has its own nail polish.Sometimes GGs &90210s DVr numbers would DOUBLE. Thier live ratings. Also, if GG &90210 hadn’t done well,CW wouldntve gone in such a girly direction by ordering more girly soapy shows. Also, both GG & 90210 got the courtesy of proper endings despite BatB like ratings because they HAD done well for the network at one point.Just you’re either a guy with guy tv tastes or a girl that prefers Arrow over HoD,CD and don’t like girly shows dosent mean that all women prefer Arrow over GG/90210.Im a 32 yr old woman that prefers female skewing shows to crap like Arrow,SPN,TTP ,..You don’t speak for all women.Just because right now, genre shows are working for CW dosent mean that the bottom won’t fall out in a couple years like it did with GG,90210.Even the WB didn’t just have genre shows like SPN,Angel,Buffy,Charmed but also had teen shows like OTH,Dawson’s Creek,Felicity ,Popularand comidies likes Reba,What I like About You,Sabrina,Teenage Witch as well as family dramas like Gilmore Girls,7 th Heaven,Everwood,Summerland.
@Pacrtick, CD was always intended to be 13 episodes a season.

B&TB has some funding from canadian government / co-production.
CW will try to fix Monday, so Friday spot sharing with Top Model could be its future.
