Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from September 16-December 8, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Raising Hope (F) 0.39
Dads de facto canceled, episodes scheduled through 2/11 0.78
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.78
Glee renewed 0.87
Brooklyn Nine-Nine :) :) :) :) 0.89
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.03
Bones (some F)     1.04
American Dad final season on Fox 1.06
New Girl      1.08
Almost Human :| :| :| 1.22
Family Guy      1.30
The Simpsons renewed 1.40
Sleepy Hollow renewed 1.50

Declining each week, the ratings for Almost Human fell to a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating last Monday. That ratings tumble, plus the schedule rejiggering to remove Almost Human from the nights of both the Sleepy Hollow finale and The Following premiere indicate that the show is now at best a "toss up" to be canceled or renewed.

Monday night shows with rapidly changing ratings pose a unique dilemma for the bear. Sometimes his prediction becomes outdated minutes after it's made. (The ratings for last night were not known when this was written and are not reflected in the prediction, or the numbers in the table above.) As always, further changes in a show's relative ratings mean more prediction changes. Stay tuned.

Why is Dads "defacto canceled"?

Rookie shows that have their episode orders reduced, and their scheduled air dates end in February, have been canceled.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

“Almost Human”: The TVBTN community’s new “Fringe”.

Sorry, couldn’t resist, given the history and the people behind AH. That said, I’m surprised people aren’t watching AH. Cliche? Sure. Typical cop procedural? Of course. Unremarkable sci-fi elements? You bet. Yet it’s still relatively decent and getting better, generally. I am a little mystified why they’re airing it out of order.

Meanwhile, other networks are advertising new cop procedural dramas so it certainly can’t be the genre.

If The X-Factor is cancelled I think Almost Human will be renewed. Judging by X-Factor’s ratings it will be renewed.

  • Isobel

Why must you screw-up every chance of a sci-fi show succeeding Fox! sadly this looks like another one season show like firefly that should be renewed!

  • tomsman

@Mina “This show should be shot at rainy nights, exclusively.”

It strikes me that if they had done so that you would accuse them of ripping off “Blade Runner”.

  • Jade Sun

AH will probably be renewed regardless because it has Abrams name attached to it. Why are people shocked that Dads is only averaging around 3.5 mil people per episode when it is going up against the single highest rated show on TV, it also has Seth MacFarlane running the show. With the guaranteed cancelation of some of these new spring season shows, don’t count out them renewing it just to please him.

  • Hambone

I wanted to watch Almost Human but I missed the premiere episode, and they never rebroadcast it (at least not in the first couple of weeks ). I cant really watch TV shows on my home internet connection, so I never bothered to watch the eps I did record, and never watched it live.

  • greysfan

Its pretty much guaranteed X Factor will be cancelled isn’t it? I love the franchise but i just can’t see it surviving at those numbers.

Glee will probably move to Fridays next season. I don’t see all the hype in Brooklyn Nine-Nine either. In fact NONE of the new comedies this season are any good to be honest. They have their fans sure but they are pretty average considering what has come previously. I am still baffled how many comedies are made each season and the majority keep getting canned.

  • Irene

I watch both Almost Human and Sleepy Hollow on Hulu plus. I like both shows. Are they counting the people watching all venues or do they still just watch live views? Both shows are good.

Almost Human rose a bit last week…It has so much potential, and Urban and Ealy are so great together. Hopefully viewers will come as the serialized elements develop and the show returns to the pilot mystery and backstories, as is supposed to happen from the next episode onward.

@ Ultimas, netflix produces TV shows because it charges subscriotions and that’s where the money comes from. Netflix has a pretty good track record with the shows they’ve made so far, a much better batting average than broadcast, in terms of quality (they won’t release their equivalent of ratings.)

  • Ian9outof10

“I fail to see the part of your comment where you explain where all the money is going to come from to pay for the production of the shows.”

To be fair, @alexis makes a good point. Amazon and Netflix are both spending money – real money too – on producing TV shows, and it seems to be working for them. It might not be as profitable as network TV, but I don’t think we’re far off that changing.

The fact is, shows that don’t work on network TV might on streaming, because they can have a far more productive relationship with viewers, and as with HBO/Showtime, there’s no promise to advertisers to deliver certain numbers, so shows can get time to find their feet.

This is criminal, Almost Human is actually a greeeat show. Clever, funny writing that doesn’t fall back on over-the-top violence or cheesy sex scenes.

  • AK

I may be in the minority here, but The Mindy Project is an awesome show. It has one of the most lovable casts around in recent memory. It’s like the happier, less pessimistic version of New Girl.

  • Richard

From the makers of the excellent, FRINGE…

ALMOST HUMAN is a show that started out on a solid note. A hybrid cross of BLADE RUNNER and ROBOCOP. Add to that a fine cast, stylish atmosphere and a slick music score by Crystal Method…

The show has a lot going for it. Though I applaud FOX for the very early renewal of SLEEPY HOLLOW, their treatment of ALMOST HUMAN has been pretty sad. They seriously do not have a clue how to promote it. My opinion…

Will it be given a full season? Or, will they do the 13 episode season and renew for the same thing next year (SLEEPY HOLLOW)? Time will tell.

The plots have become very engaging, with the cast given many moments to shine. The banter between the lead characters Karl Urban and Michael Ealy) is LOL funny. The marvelous Lili Taylor is terrific as Captain Maldonado.

I hope for the best. It’s a fine show.

  • Elise

ALMOST HUMAN is the first show in years that FOX actually showed some backbone in supporting. What happened to the great FOX network I grew up with? Why did you let CBS, NBC etc. scare you. You should be proud to offer this show. It is creative, the actors and scripts and excellent and it has real potential. Please think twice FOX before cancelling! Become the channel you used to be!

  • YoJoLo

Didn’t so much like the pilot for Almost Human but it got better. Hope they don’t cancel it. My husband and I are both enjoying it.

  • Yano

I was waiting for this series for some time. Now it is here, it is perfect. Great acting, fantastic special effects, such a cool buddy cop relationship between the android – who has more of a soul than – the grizzled cop. If this show gets cancelled it would be more of an offense than the cancellation of Firefly, but I could see where Firefly blew out the budget, is this show the same..? Cant people see quality when it sits in front of them on the screen… so sad.
This is the best who on TV since the first XFiles episode, and should be renewed, love it so much,
    take care,
