We're into the holiday season for the Renew / Cancel Index and this post before the cancellation bear's holiday break gives readers a chance to pick which shows they'd cancel were they a network programmer. You can vote as many times as you'd like, pick as many as you'd like. I've included every show still on the air, even canceled ones, so that no one feels left out!

Scheduling note: The Renew / Cancel Index will return with new Indexes and predictions on January 7, 2014 and will then only use the ratings since December 30, 2013 for its calculations for the remainder of the season. Expect some prediction changes in the first weeks of 2014.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Lol Modern Family more cancel worthy than Revenge :D

  • Scandalicious

It makes me so sad that things have ended up the way they have at ABC this season. At the beginning of the season I thought SHIELD, The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife all looked like they had the potential to be big hits. I through Once Upon a Time in Wonderland stood a chance too. Now it looks like only one or maybe two of those shows will be back. What wasted opportunity. ABC really needs to learn how to pair shows that compliment each other….

  • Ted Craig

I cannot understand the fascination ABC execs have with Trophy Wife, other than the studio owns it. They already have to promote one new show on Tuesday to replace Lucky 7.

  • AndyB

Two hopes for next season on ABC. One, that Nashville will get another season. Two, that Super Fun Night will be cancelled already and Nashville will get a good lead finally. SFN is just pure torture. To wait for Nashville while waiting for it is like a bravery test

  • PRW

I would cancel Revenge, Once Upon A Time In Wonderland, Trophy Wife, Super Fun Night, Modern Family, Once Upon A Time, Betrayal, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Neighbors.

    Fantasy schedule 2014/2015

WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY-2 Hours- Live productions, Specials, movies, etc… Endless possibilities. There is a treasure chest of options.

I would much rather DWTS in place of OUAT here, but most likely not going to happen. I think NASHVILLE might do OK here. Fans will follow it.

    DWST-2 hours

NEW male skewed adventure style show.
NEW procedural. I would like to see BOP revived, but again very unlikely.

LMS- (just enough for syndication purposes)then GOLDBERGS (if not canceled)
TROPHY WIFE- if canceled SUBURGATORY or a new sitcom. Really depends on what ABC renews.
REVENGE- Fans should follow it here. Most likely final season.

SHARK TANK- Much too profitable to just leave on Friday.
SCANDAL- Yes a bit early but this might become an even bigger monster here.
GREY’S- Strong lead in might help lessen the viewer erosion.

AFHV-Why waste expensive scripted shows here?
SHARK TANK- might need to enlist some new panelists. Not every one will be available for 2 hours a week.
20/20- caps off a cheap unscripted night.

  • Fred

OUAT WONDERLAND is the biggest disappointment this season.
Terrific casting, focused storytelling and consistently entertaining. It really is a great fantasy show. Awful timeslot is mostly to blame.

  • AllOfHerTw!st

Everything except Castle, SHIELD, and LMS! ;-) :-)

  • NJ Viewer

I’d cancel everything except Castle, Nashville, Last Man Standing, and the Middle.

  • Chris J

ABC doesn’t have many hits nowadays so I would propose next season they capitalize on their strongest shows to build each nights viewership around:

    Grey’s Anatomy

    NEW family comedy
SHIELD (AOS might rate better at 9pm)
    NEW Drama

    NEW Comedy
    Modern Family
    NEW Comedy

    NEW Reality
    NEW Drama

    NEW multicam comedy
    Shark Tank

  • Matt

LOL @ the people who think Modern Family is bad. Show is still one of the best and obviously many agree. I guess continually winning awards to some means it is bad.

It is a shame about The Neighbors. I love that show and it is funny. Not many clean and family friendly comedies on anymore. Look at 2 and a Half men, 2 Broke Girls, etc.. Guess a show needs to be about non stop sec and sexual references to do good.

Wonderland I like a lot because I love Alice in Wonderland in general and I can see why this show is likely to be cancelled. But I still enjoyed it.

  • Brandy

Cancel Super Fun Night that shows stinks.

  • hello

I can’t believe ABC hasn’t pulled the plug on Wonderland yet, the ratings are awful and the show is awful.

  • Contrarian

Different tastes. I personally find Modern Family completely unwatchable, have enough issues with my own family why would I want to follow the inane antics of a fictional one? But plenty of others like you apparently gobble it up…

  • Dan S

Interesting how people are voting for ratings winners like Scandal & MF rather than on performance. I’d say so long to Revenge, Wonderland, BITG, SFN, Betrayal & Neighbors.

  • Ultima

WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY-2 Hours- Live productions, Specials, movies, etc… Endless possibilities. There is a treasure chest of options.

While I think the chances of it happening are extremely low, I think ABC is more likely to bring back the Sunday Night Movie than the Wonderful World of Disney. After all, it’s 9-11pm that they’re having a problem with, not 7-9pm.

  • Pip

It’s sad that The Neighbors did not catch on. The show is really funny. I’m certain most people read what it was about and didn’t even try it.

  • Val

Where is Nashville ? I don’t see the show on this pool.

  • Mike

Super Fun Night needs to be canceled. It’s so bad. They’ll also need to get rid of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. I actually think Betrayal would be a good one to put in the summer with Mistresses.

  • E.L. Thorne

8:00 – The Taste (fall) / Last Man Standing (double ep. to make syndication and say goodbye)
    9:00 – Mistress (midseason)
    10:00 – Nashville

8:00 – The Bachelor (fall) / Dancing With the Stars (midseason) / The Bachelorette
    10:00 – NEW DRAMA

NEW DRAMA – a gossip adult version of Reign, it kinda works .

    8:00 – Agents of SHIELD
    9:00 – NEW DRAMA
    10:00 – Castle (24. ep)

DRAMA which can break genres and make a bridge between a male show and a female show. Something like Covert Affairs, I’m thinking it really works (with a little bit more action and inovation on cases)

    8:00 – The Middle
    8:30 – NEW COMEDY
    9:00 – Modern Family
    9:30 – NEW COMEDY
    10:00 – NEW DRAMA

First NEW COMEDY – Something about Family, but funny.
Second NEW COMEDY – Something like Bad Teacher, crazy funny schemes to earn money
NEW DRAMA – A mix between Revenge (about the luxury) and Scandal (about the scandal plots in a powerful family) , and then mix it glamorous parties and heart break secrets to be reveal. remember, Revenge was an hit here.

    8:00 – Once Upon a Time
    9:00 – Grey’s Anatomy
    10:00 – Scandal

    8:00 – Shark Tank
    9:00 – Killer Woman (13 ep.) / Revenge (15 ep. with 5 season with 15ep. guaranteed)
    10:00 – 20/20

ABC is a family and female channel .

A Sunday more stable , a Monday refresh and femme , a Tuesday for good action , a Wednesday for family and gulty pleasures , a Thursday for females , a Friday for winning.
