We're into the holiday season for the Renew / Cancel Index and this post before the cancellation bear's holiday break gives readers a chance to pick which shows they'd cancel were they a network programmer. You can vote as many times as you'd like, pick as many as you'd like. I've included every show still on the air, even canceled ones, so that no one feels left out!

The observant will note that CSI and Elementary are now "certain to be renewed", no room in the headline for them this week, they'll have to wait until January.

Scheduling note: The Renew / Cancel Index will return with new Indexes and predictions on January 7, 2014 and will then only use the ratings since December 30, 2013 for its calculations for the remainder of the season. Expect some prediction changes in the first weeks of 2014.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2014
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • Nevid

If it were up to me, I would cancel Hostages, Mike and Molly, The Millers, Two and a Half Men and The Crazy Ones.

  • Jeff (Canada)

I can’t see CBS renewing SEVEN comedies this year. Six at most, I can see. That means one of Mom/2.5 Men/Crazy Ones will most likely not survive to see another season.

  • PRW

I would cancel The Mentalist, Hostages, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, How I Met Your Mother (ending anyway), Two And A Half Men, Criminal Minds, and CSI.

  • xwiseguyx

I would cancel shows based on performance and quality and not my personal likes or dislikes. Both The Good Wife is up for numerous awards for a reason and still has a great overall viewer demo and Two And A Half Men still is getting good ratings. But if I was to do it on a personal level, How I Met Your Mother, Criminal Minds, Hostages would be fine choices.

  • NJ Viewer

It’s amazing how so many pathetic programs that are almost clones of each other can be so popular

  • AllOfHerTw!st

    Hostages and TAAHM!

  • Scandalicious

CBS is in a tough position as usual. Excluding Hostages (and We Are Men), none of their shows have been absolute failures. With that in mind I think we will see some older and more expensive shows bite the dust this season. I am hoping, really really really hoping, that they give The Good Wife one more season just to wrap things up. I will be interested to see what comedies survive. I would love to see The Crazy Ones get another season!

  • Marc

Totally thought the mentalist was heading to cancellation with the the story arc. I believe that is not the case now. It does equally as good as the Good Wife in SD, grows more in +3 than the good wife, and has a tougher time slot… 1 more season I believe.

  • Marc

@Nevid, good thing CBS doesn’t have you in the decsion chair. You know the whole thing about running a tv station is profit…

  • gerry

based on performance/ratings and stuff of this site i’d get rid of hostages (even though it finally got GOOD), mentalist, 2.5 men (expensive) and the millers (because it would drop like a stone in another slot).

if i had my way i’d get rid of anything along the lines of ncis or csi (i’m w you nj viewer). and also 2.5 men because it is awful.

  • PurpleDrazi

I’d cancel Two and a Half Men because I never liked that show and The Millers if only so Margo Martindale can go back to The Americans full time.

  • Pants on Fire

I am amazed by those who list 7 or 8 shows they would cancel for no particular reason other than they must be miserable souls. What world do you live in that you think that would ever happen.

marc the mentalist will be gone its a non cbs owned show no reason to keep it now. gerry get rid of ncis? the most watched show on tv, it could bring 3 million per episode on its next syndication contract. I think it gets around 2.5 million now.

  • Carmen

CBS is in a tough position as usual. Excluding Hostages (and We Are Men), none of their shows have been absolute failures.

Quite true. None of CBS shows would be cancelled if they maintained the same ratings on any other network. Unfortunately for a few CBS shows, it is relative to your own network ratings that count.

This is tough, but I think the best candidates to get the CBS ax may be

    1) Hawaii- 50 It has always underachieved its expectations. Plus a fair part of its ratings over the years has come from the Hawaiian backdrop itself.

    2) The Mentalist – Maybe it can recover from the far too long and drawn out Red John story line, but that is a big maybe. If it survives, it had better show renewed interest fast in the 2nd half of the TV season.

    3) The Good Wife – Again this is on the assumption that something must go. This show has never been a ratings winner and as a serialized show, is a poor bet for syndication success. Let it go.

    4) The Crazy Ones / Two and 1/2 men hours. I would switch their order to see if that helps. If not, dump them both.

Carmen good choices except for Hawaii 5-0 its syndication deal almost makes it certain for remewal

  • RJ

Who is part of the 2% that voted for The Big Bang Theory?

  • Michael

I find this whole thing silly, considering 3.65% of the people are voting to cancel a show that is ending in 11 episodes, after the network has invested in 197 previous episodes and the ratings would still probably justify the show continuing if it wasn’t the final season.

Hostages, The Mentalist & 2.5 Men

  • John

CBS is the king. I’d like to see the Mentalist get at least one more season now that Red john is wrapped up. It’s probably in the worst possible timeslot. I have my DVR set to record an hour over because it’s never on when it’s supposed to be.

  • MaryAnn

I really hope that people check out the new, rebooted The Mentalist. It has gone from mediocre at best to one of the best shows on the network. It would be a shame if it got cancelled now because people don’t give the new version a chance.
