Disney-ABC and Katie Couric released a joint statement today confirming the cancellation of syndicated talk show Katie after two seasons.

"While production will continue on Katie through June 2014, we’ve mutually agreed that there will not be a third season of the show. We’re very proud of everyone’s contributions to making Katie the #1 new syndicated talk show of 2012-2013, and we look forward to the rest of the season."

Sarah Palin is popping the champagne cork and shooting a moose. You betcha!

  • Corey

You soap opera freaks are something else…GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS…THEY ARE DEAD…THEY ARENT COMING BACK!

  • Shepherd

Right Corey! I had no idea this was going to turn into a ‘bring back my cancelled soap’ discussion. Priceless! :)

  • sofaspud

Well Corey, characters are constantly returning from the dead on soaps so I would allow soap fans to think the same of their beloved lost shows…

    1. ABC and Prospect Park can’t even agree on what day today is.
    2. The 3PM slot is gone forever. The affiliates own it. There would be no place to put AMC and OLTL in daytime unless Chew or GH were cancelled or both shortened to 30 min. That ain’t gonna happen.
    3. No distributor is going to touch AMC or OLTL. That contract and the ensuing lawsuit have tied up those two shows for a very long time.

Sorry, I know it sucks when your favorite show gets cancelled (especially if you’ve been a fan for years or decades) and it’s even worse how false hope keeps bolstering your wishes… but it’s over. The shows are gone and GH (even being up to 3M viewers now) has its death clock ticking just like any other show.

There were rumors that she was planning on moving over to Yahoo! News. So it’s only a matter of time before a separate press release is issued regarding such.

  • CookyMonzta

I suspected her days were numbered…

…Now, WABC-7 in NYC: PLEEEEEEZ Move Eyewitness News at 4 and 5 to earlier slots, and BRING BACK THE 4:30 MOVIE!!!

  • CookyMonzta

Wait a minute! Katie DID say she was leaving ABC, anyway, yes? I thought I heard something about that 2 weeks ago!

  • Tom

I wonder when the rights of AMC and OLTL revert back to ABCD? If soaps are rising in total viewers, could syndication work?

  • Jagger Dagger

Sorry fans, but AMC and OLTL are dead and buried. Get over it already.
This however may not be a bad thing for the other soaps in general. Weeding out the weak ones may be making the other soaps that are left stronger.

  • Tom

If ratings continue to rise, scripted dama will find a way back to daytime television. AMC or OLTL may not, but what draws numbers will be on air.

  • jr YOU WING

Great news! She sucks as a person and has zero talent. Good riddance. Lauer is next to go.

  • jr YOU WING

General Hospital could expand to 2 hours per day.

  • Val

Hey thats what abc does if you become #1 or have million’s of viewers they cancel you, gone, just like the soaps. Who is running Disney think Walt would be very upset that you upset so many viewers dont you?

  • Joe D

    @lJoeHamm & CookyMonzta

It had already been announced that Katie resigned from ABC News (which had been part of her Disney deal) and would be the new global anchor for Yahoo News so the end of her ratings challenged talk show was not that surprising.

  • Amy

@jr YOU WING You’re joking, right? Soaps are already too slow paced as it is.

What the U.S. soaps should do is follow the example of the telenovelas.

  • BxActor

    Whaaaaaa ? OMG

  • Tom

If soaps become demo kings, more will be developed. We had a good year. If the trend continues….

  • CookyMonzta

@Joe D: Thanks for the info. I knew I read something of that sort.

To all soap fans: Sing along with me:
Reality TV killed the soap star,
Reality TV killed the soap star,
Who needs fake drama, here’s the real thing
You want action, today we’ll bring…

[Yeah, I know…corny, but it was the first thing I can think of! :-P]

  • sofaspud

Anyone taking bets before she brings down Yahoo? This freak is laughing all the way to the bank. I can’t think of anyone else in showbiz who keeps getting multi-million dollar contrasts despite one catastrophic failure after another. You would think she was a politician.

  • Mike

The writing has been on the wall for this announcement a long time. That is the reason it was a big surprise that they released a press release this week celebrating her mediocre ratings.

It was announced weeks ago she was now going to Yahoo. And they have been leaking about the two talk shows they have in the works. One of them has already filmed a pilot episode using the Live With Kelly and Michael audience. They have said they want their Steve Harvey and still want to find their new Oprah.

One of those 2 shows will take Katie’s place or the affiliates will just plug in another syndicated talk show.
