Katie Couric

Disney-ABC and Katie Couric released a joint statement today confirming the cancellation of syndicated talk show Katie after two seasons.

"While production will continue on Katie through June 2014, we’ve mutually agreed that there will not be a third season of the show. We’re very proud of everyone’s contributions to making Katie the #1 new syndicated talk show of 2012-2013, and we look forward to the rest of the season."

she is way better than bethanney

  • Debra

I use to watch AMC and OLTL, but gave up watching them long before they were canceled, because I started to find them too boring to watch anymore.

  • Barb

Thrilled about the official cancellation. Thanks to AMC/OLTL cancellation it finally got me to stop watching the soaps altogether which I was watching since my early teens and basically tune out of daytime tv altogether for DVRing. Eat dirt ABC for listening to Frons.

Does perky and cute play any better on the web? Three broadcast networks down (and no cable?). I believe ABC and Yahoo have some sort of news sharing agreement which could have spawned this “transition” for Couric. Yahoo’s new female CEO is also on a huge spending binge. Couric seems like a smart and decent person but I honestly don’t think her older female skewing brand will be that successful at Yahoo, either.

I think Couric’s demise started BEFORE the infamous Sarah Palin interview. Her ego-centric ramblings during the Olympics clued people into her ego. Also, her obnoxious commercial during the SuperBowl talking about “all you hear is negative about America” angered many. As for Sarah Palin, true she’s not the brightest politician out there, but Couric deliberately and maliciously set-out to humiliate her.

  • TV Gord

Deliberately and malaciously asked her what newspapers she reads? Yeah. That was quite an ambush.

  • TV Gord

    ‘maliciously’. Sorry for the typo.

  • James

So, ABC-Disney has two talk shows in development? GH is in trouble, again?

  • Mike

Both shows are syndicated — so it is possible they may not even end up on ABC. They will be like Katie which airs on several networks as well as ABC.

They will offer them to affiliates and affiliates can choose to air them or not.

That was the way Oprah was. It wasn’t an ABC show at all, but many ABC affiliates chose to air it.

Here Katie airs on our NBC affiliate.

  • Jon

Seemed like a perfectly harmless show to me. Actually one of the few talk shows I would even bother watching. Guess people would rather watch who’s my baby daddy povich or some crotchety old judge hand down decisions of insignificance in a made for Tv courtroom. People love phony baloney but give them someone real like Katie and they dump all over her.

  • Carl

I’m not sure anti-vaccination screeds are harmless.

  • Randy

Damn soap opera fans are as crazy as the characters they drool over.

  • Joe

    There’s a big difference between America’s Sweetheart and America’s Cougar…

  • JJA

@TV Gord–the interview was more than just “what newspaper do you read?” It took 2 days to record, and was edited the way it was to purposely make Sarah seem stupider than normal.

But, like I said, Sarah–God bless her–isn’t exactly Harvard material. Had it been someone like Dick Cheney being interviewed, Katie would have ran home crying.

  • JD2

Good Riddance. What cable TV will she con next. And why aren’t the people that wasted millions on her fired?

  • a p garcia

Sarah Palin is probably writing a thank you note to Disney.

I miss my soaps also, but I know they’re not coming back. General Hospital at 2 hrs? No. I have often wondered though if they aired repeats from the 80′s when they were real good how they’d make out. Sorry for Katie, though I didn’t watch. More talk shows,no. If not soaps they need to try shows like a Silk stalkings or Sweating Bullets. Anyone remember those late night fillers?

  • Jagger Dagger

    @a p garcia,
But knowing Sarah palin, she probably addressed the note to Goofy.

  • k:Alex

ABC is so stupid, they order (again) a Dutch show, after Red Widow, Betrayal and (that horrible realty show) Splash, now a show named ‘Vuurzee’.
All good dramas, but not for something like ABC, more cable or PBS.

  • Tomcatt630

GH is doing better since people dont have time to watch 3 hours+ of Soaps daily. It’s not the 80′s where College kids had time to kill. Now, they got smart phones, texting all day.

No, we won’t see AMC/OL again, they flopped on other channels. Longtime AMC fans walked after all the show was ruined forever. And Susan Lucci is tired of the grind, too.
