TV Ratings Thursday: 'The Big Bang Theory' Rises as 'Community' Hits Premiere Low + 'The Assets' Has Weak Debut

CBS was number one with adults 18-49 and with total viewers.

On CBS, The Big Bang Theory earned a 5.3, up two tenths from its last original's 5.1 adults 18-49 rating. The Millers earned a 2.9, up three tenths from its last original's 2.6 adults 18-49 rating. The Crazy Ones returned to a 2.0, up a tenth from its last original's 1.9 adults 18-49 rating. Two and a Half Men notched a 2.1, up two tenths from the 1.9 it earned three weeks ago. Elementary notched a 1.8, up a tenth adults 18-49 rating from its last original's 1.7.

On NBC, the season premiere of Community notched a 1.3, down six tenths from the 1.9 adults 18-49 rating last season's premiere earned and an all-time low for a premiere. Your predictions were about right. A second episode at 8:30 earned a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating. Sean Saves the World earned a series low 0.8, down two tenths from its last original's 1.0 adults 18-49 rating. The Michael J. Fox Show notched a series low 0.8, down a tenth from its last original's 0.9 adults 18-49 rating. Parenthood earned a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating, up a tenth from its last original's 1.2 adults 18-49 rating.

On ABC, the second season premiere of   The Taste earned a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating, a far cry from last year's 2.1 adults 18-49 premiere rating. The premiere of The Assets earned a dismal 0.7 adults 18-49 rating, and has the distinction of being the lowest rated  in-season drama debut ever among the "Big 4".

  • In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 2.5/6 with an encore telecast; CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," 2.2/5 with an encore; and ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 1.7/4 with an encore.

 

  • In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 0.8/3 with an encore; "Late Show," 0.5/2 with an encore; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.6/2 with an encore.

 

  • From 12:35-1:05 a.m. ET, ABC's "Nightline" averaged a 1.1/3 in metered-market households and a 0.3/2 in 18-49 in the Local People Meters.

 

  • From 12:35-1:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (1.2/4 in metered-market households with an encore) beat CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.1/3 with an encore).  In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.4/2 in 18-49 with an encore) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/1 with an encore).

 

  • At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.7/3 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.2/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

 

 

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

 

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    The awful ratings for The Assets are upsetting because it should have been a cable series. It received virtually no promotion, whereas on cable it would have been promoted and rerun endlessly, so this grown-up, unusual, highly realistic drama would have found an audience.

    Instead it runs on ABC, home of the trashy, soapy melodrama, and absolutely no one watches it (or can–it’s not available On Demand). Frustrating.

    No matter how you cut it 1.3 for Community is awful it would not shock me if it falls under 1.0 next week.

    The Assets lower than some CW shows, so embarrassing… the question is do they pull it? It’s a limited series, but they would be as well as airing dead air rather than that

    Got to love the Community haters. They will hang on that 1.9 rating for last years premiere no matter what. Even if you point out that 1.9 is easily an anomaly compared to it’s season 3 & 4 ratings posted earlier in the thread.

    The simple fact is that the premiere was the same in 18-49 as the finale last year (and up 10% in total viewers)

    I really wish more people watched Elementary live. I also wish CBS had a different lead in other than the atrocious Two and a Half Men. It couldn’t be more different than Elementary. They should have left POI as the lead in for Elementary. Elementary has the audience…dvr ratings prove that. It just needs a different time slot in my opinion.

    I’m still a little behind/messed up/busy after returning from Christmas trip, so I totally forgot to watch TBBT – I can see it on CBS site later. Remembered Community and streamed both episodes last night on hulu – hilarious, well done. Watched several scenes more than once. I’d give them more than an A minus. Was surprised to see Chevy Chase do that short scene as a hologram. Glad to see the Fixer guy from Breaking Bad on as a teacher. Nathan Fillion might be on Community some time, someone here said? Looking forward to that. Such a great show, most of the time. I wish more Nielsen households watched it. I hope it adjusts up somehow in the finals – and where are the final ratings? Also streamed SSTW – that show is growing on me. I still need to stream The Millers, too. Missed the first ten minutes of Grimm on Friday but saw the rest of it. I’ll get back on track by Sunday for Downton Abbey and my other shows that come back next week.

    The Sugar Bowl on ESPN blew away all cable and broadcast competition (“Big Bang Theory” was aired in most of the country before the game kicked-off).

    I think that Community did fairly well since it’s up against the #1 comedy on TV, and because it’s on NBC…if it keeps it up it’ll be around for another year.
