It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

When The Assets premiered last week to the lowest in season rating ever for a drama on the big 4 networks some fans Tweeted to the Cancellation Bear that it didn't matter because the show was an eight episode mini-series.

While it's true that mini-series ratings can go low and be tolerated through to the (bitter) end, The Assets ratings were so low that a schedule yank for a (Saturday, summer, online) burn off or simply oblivion is well within the realm of possibility, mini-series or not.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Nip ticking, but shouldn’t Back in the Game be up there with Lucky 7 as cancelled?

  • One

    Omabin has a point, gentlemen.

Also, good riddance Assets. Here’s hoping Killer Women makes it 0 for 2.

  • Shepherd

The smiley legend seems to be goofed up. :)

How I would schedule ABC for 2014-2015

I would list all of the things that are ridiculous and awful about your schedule, but then I would look dumb for getting trolled, because it’s simply not possible that someone could be serious with a schedule that horrible.

  • Randy

I’ve seen a lot of terrible schedules on this site. This is by far the worst. Maybe that’s what you were going for?

  • Seymour

I agree completely. You should take a look at some of his other network “schedules” he threw together – same nonsense.

  • Tony JJ

Lol. @PRW your schedule is horrible. I mean you can’t be serious.

ABC is so pathetic this year that “The Assets” seems to blend right in. I really don’t think it matters what they decide to do.

  • joel

When I glance and see a post as long as PRW’s I don’t even bother to read it, since it’s no doubt self-indulgent crap that’s only there to waste my time.

  • Ultima

    @The Old Man
ABC is so pathetic this year that “The Assets” seems to blend right in. I really don’t think it matters what they decide to do.

ABC is playing the long game. It probably went something like this…

“We should pull all of our high-rated dramas off the air for a couple months during the winter!”

“What?! Are you crazy?! NBC did that got their ass kicked by Univision during sweeps!”

“Well, yeah, but just think how much our ratings will be up the following year, the press releases will be epic!” :D

  • Holly

    LOL!

  • Kissan

Here’s my ABC 2014-2015 schedule(if anybody wants to see):

    8:00-DWTS(fall)/The Bachelor(winter)/DWTS(spring)

8:00-OUAT(it’s only real competition will be The Voice, if the writing gets better this show can do good)
    9:00-New Family Comedy
    9:30-New Family Comedy

    8:30-New Comedy(do a raunchy comedy here like Don’t Trust The B—-)
    10:00-New Drama(do a new male procedural)

    8:00-The Middle
8:30-The Goldbergs(will GREATLY benefit with being between The Middle & Modern Family)
    9:00-Modern Family
    9:30-Trophy Wife(will also GREATLY benefit)
10:00-New Drama(make this a Desperate Housewives type show)

    8:00-Grey’s Anatomy(final season)
9:00-Nashville(this is a good show, it deserves to grow much more)
10:00-Scandal(it’s doing good right where it is, keep it there)

8:00-LMS(I have a feeling this season will do really good since it’ll be in syndication)
    8:30-New Comedy
    9:00-Shark Tank

    @ Ultima

No truer words have been spoken! (DEFINITE LOL HERE!)

  • a p garcia

Assets will probably not be cancelled as all episodes are already in the can and besides it will be on the air for only 7 more weeks. Moving it to another night is a real possibility including Saturday.

  • Ally Oop

Assets will stay put because expectations were low and it is just expected to be burnt against the Olympics.

Predicting ABC’s schedule is pointless as there’s still a few shows left to premiere and we have no idea whether or not they will do well. However fantasy scheduling is fun so maybe I’ll give it a shot later just for fun.

  • omabin

That’s a seriously horrible schedule. I don’t even know where to begin. MF to Fridays is probably the worst but well.

I like your schedule with a few caveats. You get the major idea that I have been having which is reality on Sundays and I would also place OUAT where you did. However, I think you are biased when it comes to Nashville (I don’t watch it so I don’t know) because it makes no sense to move a third year show to such a great spot and launching a new show on Wednesdays at 10, if anything should be the other way around. Personally, I would also prefer to have Thursdays be GA/Scandal/Revenge but I have to admit that ABC is probably wiser to move a new show there as much as I have hate the damage they’ve done to Revenge. I would schedule like this:

    Fall: The Bachelor + Revenge
Winter: Winter Wipeout + Celebrity Wife Swap + What Would You Do?
    Spring: DWTS + Revenge

Fall: OUAT + New Drama + Castle
Winter: The Quest + Castle R
Spring: OUAT + New Drama + Castle (Note: if the new drama fails, put the DWTS Results show here in the Spring)

NOTE: I don’t hate the idea of having family comedies at the 9pm hour instead of a drama either, I originally had it that way. But I disagree with both a Monday and a Tuesday hour, it’s too much. For me it’s one or the other and I think it’s slightly better on Tuesdays right now, depending on what NBC does next year there

NOTE 2: If this had happened this year, I would have been on board with them using Wonderland to bridge the OUAT hiatus as this one have been a decent spot to launch it (Sundays midseason would be nothing short of suicide).

Fall, Winter, Spring: The Goldbers + New Family Comedy + Agents of Shield + New Drama

Fall, Winter, Spring: The Middle + Suburgatory + Modern Family + New FAMILY (!!!) Comedy + Nashville [I would LOVE to see ABC being able to keep this night the same the entire year. For a network with so many problems to move shows around when they should, it’s amazing the turnover they have on Wednesdays, it’s insane]

Fall: Grey’s Anatomy + Scandal + New Drama
Winter: The Taste + The Taste + New Filler Drama (Co-Production is a good choice)
Spring: Grey’s Anatomy + Scandal + New Drama

Fall, Winter, Spring: Last Man Standing + The Neighbors + Shark Tank + 20/20

  • Bob

Whoo hoo!!!!! Revenge highest show for the network….lol. I know I know it is only because the other shows have not aired in the “Spring” yet. But dang it looks good.

  • Ted Craig

“8:30-New Comedy(do a raunchy comedy here like Don’t Trust The B—-)” Three questions:

    1. That would be a good lead-in for SHIELD because why?

    2. Did you notice that A23 isn’t on the schedule any more due to its horrendous ratings?

    3. Have you ever noticed that ABC doesn’t do that?

  • Ultima

Pretty sure it’s still winter! ;)

Speaking of, it’s almost back up to zero outside! :D
