It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

When The Assets premiered last week to the lowest in season rating ever for a drama on the big 4 networks some fans Tweeted to the Cancellation Bear that it didn't matter because the show was an eight episode mini-series.

While it's true that mini-series ratings can go low and be tolerated through to the (bitter) end, The Assets ratings were so low that a schedule yank for a (Saturday, summer, online) burn off or simply oblivion is well within the realm of possibility, mini-series or not.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

As bad as your schedule is, abc is bad enough at scheduling to do something similar.

  • PRW

Fridays are bleeding, moving a hit there t stop the bleeding was better than moving a sophomore comedy there that should’ve stayed with the ohe family comedies for at least another season.

Wednesdays during summer features two dramedies so there doesn’t have to be 4 new comedies there in the first year of this new scheduling.

I made Mondays scifi/genre based in hopes of attracting the men who don’t want the voice.

Still rooting (even if in vain) for Trophy Wife, The Goldbergs, and The Neighbors. The other ABC shows I care about seem at least somewhat safe. I’ll finish OUATiW, knowing it’s most likely “one and done” season-wise.

    Don’t really care it’s awful.

LOL @ Final season talk for Modern Family. Worst case scenario for that show is at least 3 more seasons.

  • Eric McInnis

Fridays are bleeding, moving a hit there t stop the bleeding was better than moving a sophomore comedy there that should’ve stayed with the ohe family comedies for at least another season.

But why move Modern Family? Yeah, it’s a hit, but that doesn’t automatically mean it should go there; it anchors one of ABC’s most successful day of the week, it gives a strong lead-in to new comedies, and continuously wins its timeslot; why give it to The Middle, a marginally-rated show? Also, ABC doesn’t find Fridays an important thing to fix; LMS, Shark Tank, and 20/20 do consistently well, beating much of their competition, and Tuesdays have been poor all around minus SHIELD, the Thursday 8 slot is bombing, Sunday’s are mediocre at best; moving something that works perfectly won’t help

Wednesdays during summer features two dramedies so there doesn’t have to be 4 new comedies there in the first year of this new scheduling.

What makes you think ABC’s going to put four new comedies in the summer? Repeats for the shows do just fine, and usually ABC, and other networks, usually just put spackle here; true, there are AGT, Hell’s Kitchen, SYTYCD, and recently Under the Dome, but most is either cheap reality or acquired shows the networks make little money out of; Yeah, there might be some original programming in the summer with the success of Dome, but still, it might take a while for that to happen.

  • Refrain

    @Eric McInnis

Look on the other network areas on here. He’s labelled anything remotely successful as final season. Don’t take him too seriously.

    @Rollie Dethloff

Once Upon a Time will never be moved to Friday, it’ll remain in the Sunday 8pm slot next season.

Grey’s Anatomy moving to 8 ET on Thursday? Not an 8 o’clock show.

To Sunday? It leads in to Scandal very nicely, on the most important advertising night of the week (movie adverts go here to lead in to Friday movie premieres), and it’s Index is third of ABC’s dramas (and S.H.I.E.L.D. is weakening, so it could go into second by season’s end…

…and Sunday is generally far weaker for any network not named FOX (NBC Sunday Night Football notwithstanding) than Thursday, so why would anyone move Grey’s to a weaker night, when there is no other plan to strengthen the night? ABC may schedule really badly (DH opposite awards shows is horrible), but not even ABC is that crazy.

ABC may need to counter program SNF, but since women do also watch football, SNF may not be counter programmable.

Yes I know a lot of people are Scandal uber alles, but is there another show at 10 ET on broadcast that does remotely as well as Scandal? And, would Scandal do better at 9 ET? Both questions come up as “no” for me.

Wednesday and Thursday nights are not ABC problems, nor is Friday. And Saturday is a broadcast nightmare, not just ABC. There’s a lot of problems ABC needs to fix, but possibly ruining Thursdays to save Sundays makes no sense.

Off topic, but can’t wait for Cougar Town tonight !
So happy ABC worked out a deal for TBS to air it.
Probably my favorite sitcom currently on the air or close to it.
As for sitcoms, enjoying Goldbergs,The Middle, ,occasionally MF, and Super Fun Night. Kill me , I think SFN is cute. Far from perfect but enjoyable nonetheless.

  • PRW

Only things I marked as final season were gang shows or shows staring a downward trend.

  • Fred

Will try and catch up with Trophy Wife. Haven’t had time to watch another show this season .
Looks funny and the kind if sitcom I would like.
Mixology is getting some good , buzz, looking forward to that if I can find another half hour a week for another show.
Still missing Happy Endings. But happy I was able to watch every ep ABC aired. A modem classic as far as I’m concerned .
Glad you caught up with OUAT WONDERLAND; of the more entertaining
new shows this season , especially the last several eps .

My only question for ABC is if SCANDAL will be placed at 9pm come next season?

    Could Grey’s work at 8pm(Thur)?

  • Networkman

I really think Revenge would do quite well behind The Bachelor next season. It may also grow in viewers if it aired after DWTS. Is ABC bold enough to move DWTS to Sunday night. I think it is really slipping against The Voice. So It would be nice counterprogramming to SNF, the animated comedies and the dramas on cable.

    2014-15 Schedule

    7pm AFHV
    8pm DWTS/The Bachelor/DWTS
    10pm Revenge

    8pm Once Upon a Time/Esmeralda/OUAT
    9pm Castle
    10pm New Drama- Houdini ABC

8pm New Drama-Untitled Soo Hugh Project
    9pm Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
    10pm Resurrection

    8pm The Middle
    8:30pm The Goldbergs
    9pm Modern Family
    10pm Nashville

    8pm New Drama- Agent Carter
    9pm Grey’s Anatomy (Final Season)
    10pm Scandal

    8pm Shark Tank
9pm New Comedy- Kevin Hart Project
    9:30pm Last Man Standing
    10pm 20/20

  • Jerry

Personallly, I think Scandal should stay at 10pm. From Revenge’s producer’s interview, I can infer that Revenge suffered at 9pm partly because the writers do not have the freedom (as they do at 10pm) to include more dark contents which make the show exciting in Season 1 at 10pm. She said they were looking into more edgy content once they come back at 10pms.

Scandal would not have been that great, content-wise, and likely ratings wise if it had shown at 9pm.

  • Fred

I have a difficult time believing that the 9:00PM hour is to blame for the lack of excitement regarding REVENGE. It was the dull monotonous storylines that did it in last season. Some eps I actually fell asleep or nodded off. That never happened this season. I feel that this season has been much more -edgy- and much more intriguing than last season and it still airs at 9;00.

Not sure about Scandal, because I don’t have time to watch it, but I’m almost certain that it would be just as entertaining and possibly even more popular at 9:00.

  • gerry

    @ kissan/obamin – i like your schedule/schedule adjustments.

i see no point in moving revenge at this point. it will do well enough to finish out it’s run in the 10 pm slot on sunday. abc should leave nashville alone as well, and focus on making the initial two hours of wed night cohesive/strong. then they can use those hours to launch a new drama wed @ 10 the next season, and nashville can take revenge’s old spot on sundays at 10 to ride out it’s final season.

they should also just do reality at 8 pm on thursday and leave grey’s/scandal alone unless they decide to switch them.
