It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

When The Assets premiered last week to the lowest in season rating ever for a drama on the big 4 networks some fans Tweeted to the Cancellation Bear that it didn't matter because the show was an eight episode mini-series.

While it's true that mini-series ratings can go low and be tolerated through to the (bitter) end, The Assets ratings were so low that a schedule yank for a (Saturday, summer, online) burn off or simply oblivion is well within the realm of possibility, mini-series or not.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Too bad Betrayal & Wonderland are so low.I hope and think Nashville gets renewed.

  • Brianna

I think Greys will probably only last another season and that depends on if the stars decide to stay. So why not give a show with a strong fanbase the 8 pm deathslot? A new SR/BB show should get the 9 pm slot (and there are many ABC can choose from) while Scandal stays put at 10 pm b/c they would have to totally change the show to change the timeslot.

  • EllieMae

They didn’t advertise that very well! – I almost passed on because just hadn’t heard anything about it – but looked at the info and since I like “The Americans’ I thought oh interesting – PLEASANTLY surprised. Maybe the word needs
    to get around about it.

  • Dan

My guess is The Assets & Killer Women will run their orders out through February and we will never hear from them again. ABC’s strategy has failed and Tuesday at 10 is still a death slot as is Thursday at 8. If 1 hour of The Taste didn’t work, why would a 2 hour format work? Its a temporary setback for ABC. ALl of these shows will simply air and then be done.

ABC can call them limited, a special 8 week event, 13 week, whatever they want but by May they wont be on next seasons schedule.

  • HeadlessHorseman

If that’s how you’d schedule ABC for mext year then it’s a good thing you’re not in charge of scheduling.

I’m trying to imagine how you came up with that. Probably something like this.

“How should I schedule ABC for next year?”
“What if you took everything that ABC shouldn’t do, and made that your schedule?”
“That’s brilliant man! Pass the cocaine!”

  • Networkman

So far, these “limited” series are not working on broadcast TV. I think the networks thought they would appeal to viewers because people would know that in 13 weeks the story would wrap up. It would be something they didn’t have to invest in season after season. Well, viewers chose to stick with their favorite programs and not invest any time in these “limited” series. Hostages did poorly for CBS. Betrayal, Killer Women and The Assets are all failures. I don’t think the networks should continue this trend next season.

  • Fred

Wonder how low Assets will fall?
    I’m guessing a 0.4.
I watched the debut live and was underwhelmed.
Watchable , but doesn’t belong on ABC during the season. MAYBE as summer series, but even better on cable.
Felt like a docudrama. Not exactly the usual flashy/glossy ABC fare.
Just received the latest issue of TV GUIDE and Matt Roush rated it a 2 out of 10.
Killer Women scored a 5. I guess the annoying previews look worse than the actual show .
Never watched it. I expect ratings to drop to a 0.7 .
ABC has no new hits this season .
I think we are going to see more renewals than we once thought.

  • Fred

Btw, these so called- limited series- or miniseries, are causing viewers NOT to even sample shows. Back in the days, it had the opposite effect.
CBS’s Under the Dome is a rare recent exception . Of course that monster is now a regular series.

  • ilovemymac

I love the goldbergs. This is my favorite new comedy. Its just fun to see the antics of kids in the 80s. I miss the 80s ok so deal with it.

  • Bear1000

I heard about this production and was curious since it was a miniseries and the subject matter sounded interesting. Can anyone tell me if it was any good?

  • mariah

just tried to watch The Assets online at verification of a paid TV provider was required to watch online. Unbelievable.

  • JMG

@Bear1000 it was Lifetime Movie-of-the-Week bad. The lead actress has the charisma and acting chops of a cinderblock. I’ve had hot pockets that weren’t as cheese-filled as the pilot.

  • Jeff

    7:00 AFV
    8:00 Once Upon a Time
    9:00 Nashville
    10:00 Revenge

Sundays have been weak for ABC for a while i feel they should use sunday as a syndication farm.

    8:00 DWTS / The Bachelor
    10:00 Allegiance

Castle is at the point where its strong enough to stand on its own ABC should use DWTS to launch a new series and allegiance seems interesting and pretty promising

    8:00 The Goldbergs
    8:30 New SIngle Camera Comedy
    9:00 Shield
    10:00 Castle

    8:00 The Middle
    8:30 New Single Camera Comedy
    9:00 Modern Family
    9:30 Dinks
    10:00 New Drama

    8:00 Greys Anatomy
9:00 How to get Away with Murder
10:00 Scandal / Secrets and Lies / Scandal

Make Thursday Shondra night greys is strong enough to move to 8:00 and the new show would be perfect sandwiched between Greys and Scandal.
    8:00 Last Man Standing
    8:30 Suburgatory
    9:00 Shark Tank
    10:00 20/20

  • Ashton

Don’t cancel Nashville! It’s my favorite show! Love it! Add more songs!

  • Matthew Chapman

The Assets has been just been yanked-Shark Tank repeats to fill slot for 3 weeks.

  • trevor

Well look at that….Assets has been cancelled, no surprise there.

  • Tony JJ

Paul Lee was awesome at ABC family but there he only had about 5 hours off original programming and he got lucky with a few hits. But ABC he has done awful other than the few hits he had his first year that are now all dwindling except Scandal. But every good quality show or shows with promise he messes up.

    A few mistakes.

Happy Endings shouldn’t have been moved to die
Suburgatory shouldn’t have moved from the middle where it was growing out of it for a while
Devious Maids should’ve been picked up
    GCB should’ve been renewed
    Malibu Country should’ve been renewed
The Neighbors should’ve been cancelled and not placed with multi camera last man standing.
Body of Proof should’ve been renewed (I mean did he even watch this years pilots to see they would all be stinkers?)
Apt. 23 should’ve debuted in the fall where there was a lot of buzz surrounding it
Trophy Wife should’ve gotten the post Mod Fam slot and should be marketed big time because it’s one of the best comedies this season.
And he’s picked up some of the worst shows in the past few seasons.
Bad scheduling with shows going against award shows, etc.
    terrible marketing.

Geez I didn’t expect this list to be so long so I’ll just stop here but man this guy has had a lot of stinkers. Unless resurrection, mind games, or mixology premiere to 3.0+ and is a hit. This guys needs to go before they become as desperate in comedy and dramas as NBC. modern family won’t be pulling in good ratings forever. They need a new comedy hit ASAP stop playing comedy musical chairs.

  • Mitchell

    @Tony JJ

I’ll play devil’s advocate and defend Paul Lee a little here.

Happy Endings got a whole year behind Modern Family. If it couldn’t translate that into viewers when it moved it’s the shows fault.

Malibu Country would probably be doing about what The Neighbors is doing now. I don’t think it was a colossal mistake. We’re talking about an extra tenth here or there, at best.

Body of Proof only rated acceptably when it was behind DWTS. Every other time it rated awfully. You can’t just stick with a proven failure just because some new shows might fail. Maybe it should’ve gotten a midseason renewal, but I don’t think it was the huge mistake everyone else seems to think it was.

Trophy Wife has lost half the audience it started with. If it was that good, wouldn’t people have stuck around? I find it hard to believe that it’d be doing that much better than Super Fun Night.

I mean, he isn’t doing an amazing job, but I think his job is tougher than it looks. You can say that doing things your way would’ve worked out better, but at the end of the day the only actual results we see are those from Paul Lee’s choices. Everything else is just fan fiction.

  • Tony JJ

You make all valid points. But one thing you can say about body of proof is that it repeated well and brought in a lot of viewers and it was good spackle when you needed it. + being produced by ABC it could’ve hit syndication eventually.

But I think where ABC really screws up is marketing. Scandal has the best promos on the network and it has the highest ratings. Seasons 1 of OUAT and Revenge had great promos. But this year ABC sucks at marketing. Trophy Wife gets barely any ad time alone it’s always conjoined with the goldbergs.

And I honestly believe if goldbergs and trophy wife were on Wednesdays to begin with they’d be doing way better than back in the game and super fun night did.

  • Joseph A

Don’t blame this on Marketing ,

I tried to watch Assets but it was like listing / watching paint dry on a wall
