How I Met Your Mother final season

It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

CBS hasn't canceled a second season drama since Shark in 2008, and sophomore drama Elementary's ratings are far from the calamity that would cause them to consider cancelling it, so it's certainly safe for renewal for next season (and at least the following season as well). Edit/Update: And CBS hasn't canceled a veteran drama airing Monday-Thursday since the 2008-9 season. Yet more historical precedent.

The observant will note that CSI's prediction was also moved to "certain to be renewed". The bear's holding that for a future headline.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

CBS always has the problem of too many hits. NBC is very jealous!

I think one of the two of Mentalist/Good Wife will be canceled, and the other renewed. I really hope CBS decides to shake things up next season on Sundays.

  • abc

What do four yellow smileys mean?

  • Dan

@abc, if you read the notes above it tells you.

  • One

Honestly, I think you’re wrong. Shark was in about the same ratings band as Elementary is now, if the data I have available is accurate. That seemed to be enough to get that canceled, so I’m afraid the same might be getting set up for Elementary.

  • abc

@Dan, in the notes smiley chart, it only shows 3 yellow smileys and then 4 green smileys underneath, but doesn’t mention what 4 yellow smileys mean.

  • Ultima

Elementary is going to be renewed.

Through the first six weeks of the season, it was the highest rated 10pm drama on CBS in the C+3 ratings. While those numbers are obviously out of date, its Live+SD ratings haven’t fallen relative to the rest of the network, so it’s safe to assume that it’s still doing well.

  • Michael1

It appears as though the left-most column is missing from the chart. Either add a smiley to each entry in the chart or subtract one from each show.

  • Dan

@abc, yes to Michael1’s comment, add one smiley to the notes section as the first smiley is not showing up.

  • abc

@Michael1…Thanks. So everything with 4 yellow smileys means “more likely to be renewed than cancelled”?

Just like to see where “Mom” stands and hoping it gets a second season.

  • Bill Gorman

“It appears as though the left-most column is missing from the chart. Either add a smiley to each entry in the chart or subtract one from each show.

Weirdly, after using that same smiley text for the Notes legend for *years* it broke at some point recently. I have reformatted it and it now displays properly.

  • Shepherd

No index numbers for Hostages? Didn’t it air episodes last night?

  • Jeff (Canada)

The R/C Index goes Monday-to-Sunday, so it only includes up to Sunday night.

  • Ryan

Unfortunately a lot of people on this website are in a hurry to be the first to comment or say “yeah_______” before anyone else that they fail to actually read all of the information.

  • Randy

    Stop. You look foolish.

  • Refrain

Why are you attaching final season to shows that aren’t ending anytime soon? Specifically Survivor, Criminal Minds, Amazing Race, Big Brother? Strange.

  • Jermal

PRW’s fantasy schedule is ridiculous as we don’t know what pilots have been ordered other then the few that have been announced.

  • CraveRecords

PRW’s schedules are ridiculous because he’s putting FINAL SEASON on hits and scheduling 10 episode seasons for other hits.

  • Bill

I’d like to see TM get a shortened final season but I know CBS doesn’t do that so hopefully there’s no cliff hanger type ending.
