It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

When the CW announced its mid-season schedule ending the scheduled run for Beauty & The Beast on March 10th, with no scheduled return date for the remaining episodes that was the final nail in the coffin for the sophomore series (as if its CW lowest ratings weren't enough).

When will the remaining episodes air? The bear has no idea. How many fantastic scenarios can delusional commenters come up with why the show isn't certain to be canceled? The bear's not sure he can count that high.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

:) :) :) :) more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014
     certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

This is my CW 2014-2015 schedule:

    8:00-The Flash(new series)

    8:00-The Originals
    9:00-SPN spin off(new series)

    9:00-The 100

    8:00-Carrie Diaries(Oct-Jan)/Star Crossed(Jan-May)
9:00-Hart Of Dixie(22 episode final season)

TTP cancelled. Top Model to air season entirely in summer.

  • Melanie

The only real scheduling questions I have for the fall are 1) whether Tuesdays stay intact or Supernatural moves (to Mondays) so that Originals can launch a new show and 2) how many new shows does CW want to launch? and 3)Will they move a moderately rated sophmore show to Fridays, knowing that its already borderline ratings will tank there?

Monday is problematic for the CW, they have nothing to build on here, so its either a whole new night, keep a moderate performer (TTP or Reign)or move SPN to support the new show at 8. The night needs an anchor – a self starter —
8 PM New Anchor Show (the Flash?)
9 PM (open 1)TTP ? SPN? New show?

Tuesday is working really well. So do they break it up or not? I think not.
    8 PM Originals
    9 PM SPN? New show?

Wednesday is half working for them.
    8PM Arrow
9 PM the 100? New show?

Thursday is also half working. Do they leave Reign there, or try something new (again) after TVD?
    8 PM Vampire Diaries
    9 PM Reign? New Show?

Friday — Whose Line Is It Anyway might improve Fridays enough to ‘fix it’ for now and with Mondays a shambles and HOD needing another season for syndication and ANTM taking up part of the Fall, I’m not sure there actually IS any room for a sophmore on Fridays. I know TCD’s ratings are awful, but I could actually see another season of 13 episodes for spackle on Fridays.
8 PM ANTM, Whose Line and TCD? Sophmore? NOT a new show.
    9 PM HOD

Yes finally!! BACK will be cancelled… now hopefully TTP and Reign will bath be renewed!!????

  • Ames

Just caught up on Reign over the holidays… Loved It! Hope it get renewed!

  • Charlie

I honestly, could careless if it gets canned (beauty and the beast) as long as i have The Vampire Diaries and The Originals :D

I don’t see star-struck or whatever being successful

The CW will not premiere only 2 new shows, they always premiere 3. We might think they are already doing great but they are still miles ahead of the other networks so they need to keep improving and trying with new shows. I think it’s impossible that both Reign and The 100 keep their midweek timeslots. If both of them are doing well by season’s end, I expect one to keep the slot and the other to air on Fridays at 8 for the whole season next year (almost certainly Reign). If one is doing well and the other badly by season’s end, I think whichever is doing well gets renewed and keeps the slot and the other gets canned – no need for a pitty renewal because they can fill Fridays with America’s Next Top Model/Whose Line + Hart of Dixie at a lower cost, so I think they will only renew if it’s worth it. If both are doing poorly by season’s end, one will be renewed and keep its slot and the other will be cancelled (same argument that there is no need for Friday spackle).

I am assuming that both TTP (so sad!) and SC are dead.

  • thesnowleopard

Hmm, seems to be a lot more TCD and BatB-bashing on here than not, but okay.

Lots of assumptions with your schedule, not least that the backdoor pilot to Supernatural hasn’t even aired yet, let alone been picked up, The 100 hasn’t aired yet (and may well tank), and that you think Reign is going to stay on Thursday nights at 9pm when it was getting 0.6s and the odd 0.7 in the fall (and who knows what it will get when it comes back?). That may end up being good enough for a renewal, but no way does that rate the show staying in that slot.

You’re also assuming TCD will be renewed (not impossible but hardly likely) and that TTP won’t. TTP is about in the same position as Reign right now and both could well be canceled. Or renewed.

A lot also depends on how many pilots the network chooses to air. So far, it’s been airing three each fall, with some midseason replacements. If more than one or two of those does well, that can fill up a schedule fast.

  • Timmy G

@Melanie, Arrow/Supernatural combo was strong for the CW last year on Wednesday but it still got broken up. I’d say it’s 99 percent certain that one of the two will move to Monday’s next season to fix the night. Unless Star Crossed is a surprise hit there’s no reason for this not to happen.

Now it’s up to debate which one makes the move. Conventional wisdom says Supernatural since it’s been used to fix every other night but I really think it should be The Originals because Tuesday’s at 9 have been a huge problem spot for the network in the past.

  • Charmed

    Is TTP expensive? Is Reign?

  • Swiftnissity

@Charmed, supposedly Reign is more expensive but it’s yet to be confirmed.

  • Brandy

I think BatB,TTP get cancelled.HoD gets renewed for a final fourth syndication season.I don’t think SC or The 100 will do well but we’ll see.(I’m gonna watch SC).I think and hope Reign gets renewed but we’ll have to see how it does in spring.Even with HoD,ANTM running into fall,TO,VD,Arrow,SPN renewed ,there’s three to four spots(once Top Model ends its season/cycle) for new shows.TO/SPN will be split up since only Arrow,VD,TO can be used as good leadins and SPN has been a good lead out and fixed nights.Whatever new shows that aren’t 0.9-1.0 hits that are renewed will move to Fri.I wouldn’t be suprised if Reign or CD take over for ANTM and pair with HoD, but then again Whose Line is matched up with it this spring so they may not pair HoD up with another female skewing show.I won’t guess if HoD gets a full or short season.

  • Brandy

CD i don’t know.I hope it gets renewed.I wouldnt be suprised if it was cancelled..But I can see it being renewed as Nikita’s ended,BatB is done,TTP is failing and if both Midseason shows tank.Plus, it’s good schedule spackle since its 13 episodes, it can fit anywhere.

  • Brandy

    I hope Painted Girls,The Prefectionists,maybe Revengers.

  • Rebooted

    The Flash (new)

    The Originals

    Badlands (new)

    Vampire Diaries
    The Perfectionists (new)

    ANTM/Carrie Diaries(?)/Who’s Line
Hart of Dixie (full final season)

  • DuMont

‘The Carrie Diaries’ (F) de facto renewed 1.00

At $141 CPM, ‘The Carrie Diaries’ is the sixth most efficient W18-34 purchase on The CW for Madison Avenue ad buyers. At $108 CPM, it is the seventh most efficient A18-34 purchase. ‘The Carrie Diaries’ CPMs are out-performing ‘Hart of Dixie’, Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘The Tomorrow People’ on both dimensions, and are but a few dollars behind ‘Reign’ ($139/$103)…the price of a cup of coffee basically.

Since its December 27th encore, no other regular series encore on The CW has surpassed ‘The Carrie Diaries’ encore W18-34 rating, evidence that Carrie is good repeater with young women.

The CW has had success this season shifting its Friday targeting to young women, and Fridays are outpointing Mondays in the W18-34 demographic. I expect next season we’ll see ‘ANTM’, ‘The Carrie Diaries’ and ‘Hart of Dixie’ share the night, all three series capable of pulling 0.5-0.7 W18-34s in L+SDs, but also shows that make big gains in DVR viewing and online streaming.

If it continues to draw strong A18-34s, ‘Whose Line is it Anyways?’ is likely going to Monday nights long-term as part of a re-build of that night into a comedy block.

With network pilot season about to shift into high gear, this is the time of year I like to let my imagination conjure up the fall schedules of my dreams. These are entirely self-serving and, since they are never going to happen anyway, I feel no obligation to limit myself to only product that is already in development. So, for the fun of it, here is my CW schedule for next fall:

    Sunday (yes, Sunday):
8:00 – SURF CITY. Seriocomic tale of SoCal beach life, circa 1962
    9:00 – Hart of Dixie

8:00 – BLACK CANARY (Arrow spinoff)
    9:00 – The 100

    8:00 – The Originals
    9:00 – Supernatural

    8:00 – Arrow
9:00 – ASSIGNMENT: EARTH. Tom Welling in spinoff from 1968 Star Trek episode.

    8:00 – The Vampire Diaries
9:00 – GHOST. Series version of the popular movie.

8:00 – STARLOG. Video version of one-time genre magazine, from makers of E.T.*
9:00 – QUEEN OF SWORDS. Repeats of the 2000 adventure series.

  • Charmed

Is there any chance that Someday, Someday Maybe will be picked up? I haven’t seen it mentioned since August.

  • Adrian

Do you work for the CW PR department? that’s some spin on TCD numbers.

I wouldn’t declare any of 100, Reign, TTP or SC dead or alive until we see spring numbers for all of them. BATB is obviously dead (surprised there aren’t more beasties here proclaiming it’s not)
I don’t know about Carrie, history would indicate it’s toast, but it was renewed last year when it shouldn’t have so who the hell knows.

  • Melanie

@Timmy G Yeah — I got it wrong last year because I was sure they’d leave SPN w/ Arrow. They could very well move SPN to Mondays. But I don’t think they’ll move the anchor show since Originals is doing well on Tuesdays against big competition from NCIS & SHIELD.

  • Lane

    About time for TBTB

Well hopefully surprises do happen this year, and CW just makes HOD disappear too.
