It's a New Year and the Cancellation Bear is back!

When the CW announced its mid-season schedule ending the scheduled run for Beauty & The Beast on March 10th, with no scheduled return date for the remaining episodes that was the final nail in the coffin for the sophomore series (as if its CW lowest ratings weren't enough).

When will the remaining episodes air? The bear has no idea. How many fantastic scenarios can delusional commenters come up with why the show isn't certain to be canceled? The bear's not sure he can count that high.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Anyone else seeing blanks on the index? No way TCD is at a 1.00

  • Brandy

@Lane what’s your problem with HoD?Itll be renewed for syndication
Re: CD Showrunner Amy Harris says she’s optimistic about a renwal, that the show still does well in online/streaming & DVr which is what got it renewed last season and that the season finale is written as a season finale, not a series finale.

  • Winston

Never mind. I see it’s calculated using only midseason results. DUh.

  • Dave

Hart of Dixie should be cancelled along with a Beauty and the Beast and The Carrie Diaries.

REIGN and TTP are on the bubble until S-C and 100 premieres.

Like last season, I think Pedowitz will follow the same model in renewing 2 Fall dramas(The Originals, Reign(likely) or TTP) and one midseason drama (S-C or 100)

  • RS

I agree that Heart of Dixie is a probable renewal for next year for syndication. It’s a sweet little “Gilmore Girls” show that can air on a family channel (what are they going to do – air the vaguely obscene “Two Broke Girls”?) Moving it to Friday now is determinate as to whether it gets a full or short season. Follow the show to Friday, Fans (like the SPN fans) and you’ll get a full season. Beauty and the Male Model is dead (and there was much rejoicing in the land from fans of the true trope – he’s a beast (as in every other incarnation); he’s not Mr. Pretty with a pimple). I have no opinion on CD because I just don’t care. This is not SPN’s last season, people. Our two leads are signed on for this season and it is in the #2 or #3 spot on the network. If it drops next year or our 2 leads demand more money, Season 11 will be announced as the last season.

    my 2014-2015 season schedule
    8:00-the flash
    8:00-the originals
9:00-the 100(or hourman if it 100 gets cancelled)
    8:00-the vampire diaries
9:00-(the painted girls or izombie whichever one is better)
    8:00-whose line
    9:00-hart of dixie(final season maybe 6 or 13 episodes)

cancelled shows: beauty and the beast (this show needs to go asap this show is basically de facto cancelled too since it was left off the schedule)
carrie diaries (sort of feel bad this will be cancelled maybe if hart gets half a season this could get renewed to replace it during midseason)
the tomorrow people (so much potential wasted prefer reign over this and I gave both shows a chance)
    midseason shows
spn spinoff (although i dont want this show to get picked up it still might and so its better to leave it off the schedule until midseason so their wont be so many spinoffs at a time)
red (leave this show for any show that fails miserably)

  • RS

Sorry, the next season is not SPN’s last. Season 10 is a given, considering its ratings. Season 11 may be the last, given ratings and the two lead’s decisions.

O Yea everyone, Watch Out for the Beast and his Beasties, they are coming for the Bear along with their delusional scenarios and comments. Loved the show but knew for awhile it would get axed, as did the fans. I certainly enjoyed the new season and was looking forward to remaining episodes. I hope Netflix can buy the remainder of the episodes if the CW decides not to air them. So sorry I had my delusional hopes for the show I hope it was ok to leave a comment for youMr Bear and certainly hope it didn’t annoy anyone else here on the comment board. Beasties had no right to come on here to the comment board with delusional scenarios that bother poor Mr Bear or others.
    Cheers and Happy New Year.

  • Tommy Mickens

Can anyone explain to me why Reign and TTP can’t both be renewed? I see it in the comments all the time, people arguing over which one of the two will be renewed. I understand it’s not normal for the CW to renew that many shows, but this is a very abnormal season for them, with ratings going up. I also understand that a midseason show may also do well, but that’s a big if since most CW shows usually don’t do so well (especially midseason shows). It just seems to me that, at current ratings, both should be renewed as the CW would rather bet on four more years of both of these than hope a new show (that would replace the cancelled one of the two) next year might do better, since that’s usually not the case.

  • thesnowleopard

    @Tommy Mickens
There’s no reason they can’t both be renewed if they get good enough ratings. But starting out with a 0.9 and dropping to 0.6s in the fall isn’t very decent. Such shows usually drop to a 0.5 or 0.4 by the end of the season and the CW would likely be better off to start all over again with two new shows next fall if that happens.

If they were both getting 0.9s or even 0.8s with the odd 0.7, that would be different. That’s why TO is in no current danger. We’ll just have to see. They *could* both be renewed; they could also both be canceled. Canceling TTP or Reign is only one type of possible scenario.

  • Brandy

@Tommy, there is a slight chance both could be renewed if SC & the 100 flop and with Nikita ended,BatB unofficially cancelled and if CD also gets cancelled and if HoD gets a short season next season and if they both keep thier current ratings.
However,SPN,VD,TO,Arrow,HoD are certain renewals and that’s half of cws lineup and HoD might get a full season next season plus ANTM takes a partial slot neither of which leaves much extra room especially since CW will likley premire three new fall shows next fall. Also looking at the fact TTP went from 0 9 to 0.5 already behind a very good leadin isn’t promising for TTP.

  • gerry

hart of dixie will get its 4th season on friday. cw could easily do fall/spring friday programming and still air tcd as spackle, which is what i’m hoping for but i’m also realistic that it is likely gone. it should have stayed on monday where it was getting 0.4-0.5 and batb should have been cancelled last year. that show’s ship has sailed.

sadly, as much as i like ttp, i think it is probably gone as well and reign will stay. but reign should have been moved this spring as well as ttp, to see how it does without tvd propping it. and for those that say tvd isn’t propping it, that’s what all the beasties said last year and they were wrong. (though i’ll concede there is more of a separation with with tvd and reign than there was for tvd and batb.)

  • Dan W

Am I the only one that thinks Hart of Dixie will get renewed for a full season? I’m also 50/50 on The Carrie Diaries getting a 13 episode renewal…I think it may still happen regardless of what people say. Really praying for a repeat of last year when it got renewed and EVERYONE said it was “officially dead.”

  • Charmed

@DanW I agree with you about HOD, it actually doesn’t do that bad, I think a full, non-final (for lack of a better word) season isn’t out of the question, but we’ll have to see how it performs on Friday.

  • thesnowleopard

    @Dan W
Uh, no, Dan, if you actually read some of the posts above you, you’d see that people generally believe HoD will get a full season unless it really tanks on Friday.

Where people are in disagreement is whether TCD has a chance, which is the very definition of a bubble show.

  • Diana

BATB….”Certain to be Cancelled”??? NOT ON MY WATCH!!!!!

  • Charmed

Reading an interview from last month with Amy Harris (TCD show runner) and she said they were always considered a limited series. She also said they have been talking with the network about possible season 3 storylines.

  • CreacK

    My fantasy schedule:

    8-Reign or New Drama
9-New Drama or The Tomorrow People

    8-The Originals

    9-The Flash

    8-The Vampire Diaries
    9-Supernatural spin off

    8-Hart of Dixie
9-Americas Next Top Model/Mid Season New Drama

  • HeadlessHorseman

Quit obsessing over TCD. It’s dead and it’s not coming back. Accept it.

You’ve gone through every possible excuse ad nauseum.

    But it’s a limited series.
The CW didn’t expect any better for Fridays.
    It’s cheap to produce.
    It does great online.

Every time you mention it as though it has a chance of coming back, people take you less and less seriously.

  • Charmed

@HeadlessHorseman not gonna take orders from you
