@patF. Y & R may be back at number 1 for now but I have a strong feeling she may be yelling TIMBER this next season and make way for a new #1.

  • j

I can’t wait to see how long the renewals will be for.All the soaps did well in 2013.Y&R still has good numbers even with all the changes with the writers.

  • truliahart

I used to watch Y & R but have stopped. If Brad Bell or Kay Alden or Sally Sussman took over writing I would come back but these guys are cheap, lousy and boring.

  • Dianne

I’m guessing those praising BB are newer viewers.
    BB sucks big time.

BB gained with the addition of Thorten Kaye and the newer viewers who don’t know the shows’s history.

With all the hype of Thorsten Kaye as Ridge, there is no mention of how long he signed on for. He also didn’t relocate his family to LA.

  • truliahart

    Dianne,I have been we watching both B & B and Y & R for over 20 years And still watch B & B. Hate Y & R and don’t watch anymore.

  • Dianne

I forgot to mention, Steffy was back for five days.
A lot of BB’s younger viewers tuned in for her.
Jacqueline MacInnis Wood has now moved on.

  • truliahart

I love Steffy. Even a brief visit from her is welcome. That is what I love about B & B. It is a transient show and so that cast rotates a lot of great people. They don’t burn bridges and so familiar faces pop up for a brief stint to keep the show fresh.

This was due FRIDAY 12-27-2013 almost 2 weeks ago! Even with Christmas and New Years it is RIDICULOUS to delay the information to you all (SARAH, I KNOW IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!!) What is their excuse? Do they just take off for 2 weeks? How long must we wait for the ratings for the week of December 23-27, 2013 which normally would be available 1-2 or 1-3, 2014, it now being 1-8-2014 already? BTW, do you other “commenters” blame the Holiday rush for lower viewership for all the soaps? I know I still either watched them live or via recorded media the same day. MY CABLE SERVICE stopped SOAPNET on 12-14-2013 for some reason and had removed The TVGUIDE NETWORK a year ago! So we are in deep **it as far as having repeats of even Y&R available now! I think SOME VERSION of an NBC relative, such as the 6-7 that partnered to show the Summer Olympics should make arrangements to replay the show the same day, even if it is at 2:00 am so we can record it on days that NBC NEWS breaks in to tell us the President expelled gas or some other non-newsworthy crap as they so often do, but my thoughts have fallen on deaf ears thus far! HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone and thanks for your input and often helpful and “newsy” comments! You are ALL appreciated!

These soap ratings are essentially cut-and-pasted from the Soap Opera Network (SON) website. SON gets their ratings information from a third party source (a source that, in would seem, pays Nielsen for the ratings information). SON doesn’t get these numbers from Nielsen nor do they pay for them (I’m basing this information on comments made by the site’s webmaster). As such, Nielsen is probably not as far behind as some people think that they are. SON just hasn’t been able to get the numbers from their source. This could be because the source is busy, on vacation, sick, or any other reason. If TVBTN or SON got the soap ratings directly from Nielsen, we would probably be all caught up by now. Since they don’t, we don’t have any other alternative except to be patient and hope that the numbers are all caught up by the time the numbers are released next week.

I misspoke in my earlier post. I see these ratings are from the week prior to the holiday week. That said, I still think the stories have been really entertaining and compelling. They are way up from a year ago. I’m as disappointed as any soap fan about the cancellations of the soaps in recent years, but, as many have pointed out, it has probably been a good thing (ratings wise) for the remaining 4.

I thoroughly enjoy the remaining shows and hope the “culling of the herd” has benefitted daytime soaps so they are here to stay for the long haul. A great mix of soaps, news, game shows, and talk are about all the networks can do to compete with the multitude of entertainment options viewers have. Is that my preference? No. I miss the cancelled soaps, but get that daytime and entertainment media has really changed. I will enjoy what I can and disregard the rest.

I believe there is a place for the remaining daytime soaps for the foreseeable future.

Soap operas have been being pre-empted for news and other things for years and years now.

When I started watching soap operas if a soap opera got pre-empted for anything there was no way to ever catch that again. My Mom watched Love of Life from the day it came on til the day it went off but missed the last few minutes because our local station broke in for a severe weather report. It was years later before she finally got to see the director walking through the sets saying the goodbye to the final show.

At least now for those that have the Internet you can go to the website for that channel and watch what you missed. GH is now on Hulu and Hulu Plus and even On Demand. Y&R and B&B are both on TVGN. All 4 are available on the networks’ websites.

I am sure that Sony will work out some kind of deal for Days like they had with SoapNet. That was a big help to their budget for Days, and I am sure they will miss that money that SoapNet paid to air the show.

Even when soaps were pulling in a whole lot higher ratings than they are now the networks broke in.

The networks and affiliates serve a whole lot more than just soap fans. Their news division have a responsibility to keep all informed. What is trivial to one group is not to another.

And believe me I’ll tolerate one trivial news break-in because you never know when it will be the most important one. I have lived in tornado alley and I was grateful for each and every time my soap was interrupted to tell me of a tornado in the area. I have friends who wouldn’t be here today if it hadn’t been for some of those interruptions.

  • Mike

I believe a mixture is definitely what the networks are going to have to keep.

Even specialty cable networks aren’t working anymore. SoapNet tried to add movies to save itself, but they didn’t diversify enough.

TV Land broke out with new sitcoms because just showing classic TV didn’t work anymore. Sleuth branched out into other things. AMC had to add series to make it. Even the gay themed network had to start airing non-gay themed shows in order to stay on the air. TNT is now adding reality shows to it’s lineup. Even the movie channels had to start airing series.

The networks whether cable or not have got to reach out to a wide range of viewers in order to make it. There’s just too much competition.

  • robert sprague

use your vets gh ie luke anna Felicia mac lucy scott and bobbi tacy . we like robin but we don’t like her solved down are thoats more Julian and micheal give us lucas and bobbi.

  • Jason

I think GH is doing a better job using vets, although TPTB made a huge blunder not keeping Tristan Rogers (Scorpio) on the canvas. I believe his recent absence from the story is reflected in the current ratings tank over the last several weeks. GH was great through November with Faison, Scorpio, Duke and Anna. Now, not so much.

I like the storyline with Robin Mattson(Heather) although I find it kind of limiting. If we must have Todd (I mean Franco) on the show, at least he’s related to veteran characters Heather and Scotty. I wish they would rehabilitate Heather a little and give her an operable “genetic” brain tumor, like the one Franco had, thus freeing her from the confines of the sanitarium and her murderous past.

I think TPTB are trying and I give them credit for keeping me tuned in after I vowed 10 years ago (after Anna Lee was booted) to never watch the show again.

That being said, I’m hoping for the time when Morgan and Kiki are killed off…..

  • diana

Jason, I agree, I was loving GH when Tristan Rogers was on, playing Santa, mixing it up with Duke&Anna. But Y&R has him now. Who’s going to be there to pick up the pieces when Anna finds out Duke is involved with the mob ONCE AGAIN?! Please, not Luke. And now Patrick & Robin have to deal with Sabrina’s pregnancy .. hasn’t this type of storyline been done to death?! Getting bored ..

  • PatF

Trulia…anything is possible but I doubt it.

They are so far ahead in total households that it would take a while to fall from the top spot, and with all the backstage negative press going on, there will be a tipping point for CBS/Sony when they’ll axe that loon Phelps. They are not about to give up their claim to being #1 for 25 years.

Also surprisingly the transition from JG’s writing to Altman/Passanante is showing some signs of life. I’m optimistic as are a lot of fans.

A lot of people claimed they stopped watching when Delia was killed off, but there has been no hit to the ratings. We’ll see what happens when MM leaves. (I personally can’t wait for him to exit.)

  • robert

Why did they count Friday. It was preempted.

  • Mike

They counted Friday according to the guy at SON because the network has to ask for Nielsen not to count it and they didn’t.

I’m sure they either didn’t have time to or I had read at one time that they can only ask for so many shows to not count each year or each season. So if that is true (and I don’t know for sure it is) they might have wanted to save it for a scheduled repeat that they know scores even lower.

  • MBmomof3

I really wish GH had held onto Tristan Rogers. Love him as Robert Scorpio on GH, but never liked the character of Colin on Y&R. I feel the writing on Y&R in the last few weeks has really improved. for a while there it would sit on my DVR for weeks and then I would FF through a lot of it. Now, I’m looking forward to it again. I know it seems like a small detail, but I am loving the outside shots of the Abbot and Chancellor estates. Can’t wait to see the Newman ranch (although here in WI they are called farms).

  • Mike

As to Y&R and the backstage turmoil, writing, etc. I honestly think that with so many of her cast mates coming out in support of Hunter King the allegations have to be true. Eileen Davidson called her a brave soul and other things. Of course she got attacked by one of Muhney’s fans just like Greg Rikaart did. Both Eileen and Greg put them in their place though.

There has to be so much drama backstage now.

I was really proud of Beth Maitland though. This is what she tweeted today:

“Scrubbed and ready…off to GC today. Lunch with my bestie Tracey Bregman, then Abbotts, Abbotts, Abbotts. It’s a New Year, people. Some people make mistakes. Some people leave. Some stay to pick up the pieces. Let’s do this!!”

I have just really been surprised at the people thrown under the bus by Muhney’s fans to try and take the focus off him. Everyone from Jeanne Cooper to even Bob Barker and so many others have been trashed and run through the ringer to try and make Muhney look good or innocent. And so many of the Y&R cast attacked.

I think Y&R will bounce back but it can’t be a great working environment right now. Of course some are alluding to a divided cast but some of the ones who are supposed to be divided have come out in the last few days tweeting support for HK. So who knows.

As to the writing, PatF I too think that it is showing some life under the new writers. I hope that it is not a fluke.
