How I Met Your Mother final season

-
In recent years, the only veteran dramas canceled by CBS have been from either Sunday or Friday night, their syndication warehouses. The Cancellation Bear doesn't see any reason that's going to change this season, and since all four of the current Sunday and Friday dramas would meet the bear before CSI would, it's certain to be renewed.

The cancellation bear has started Intelligence as a "toss up" based on its  Tuesday 9pm special timeslot premiere ratings last week, which were hopeful, but not necessarily indicative of what it's likely to get at 10pm Monday. *The January 13, 10pm regular timeslot premiere ratings (which will only be available after this is written/posted) will likely change that prediction, and certainly get the show into the headline next week. Stay tuned.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

And yet I think that TGW will be renewed over The Mentalist. Ratings aren’t good, but the critical acclaim doesen’t hurt.
This fifth season has been terrific so far and it’s absolutely one of the best drama currently airing.
The Kings said they’ll need 7 season to finish the story. C’mon CBS!

  • Rebecca

What would be a good guess for an r/c index number for Mom? It doesn’t have one. I’m hoping it has a good shot at being renewed. Glad to see The Millers doing well.

  • Mark Drei

My first fantasy schedule this season. I think it is really good for CBS dramas, but the comedy part I am still not sure on.

    Sunday:
    60 Minutes
    The Amazing Race
    CSI
    Final Season of Sunday Drama

    Monday:
    How I Met Your Dad
    Two Broke Girls
    Mike & Molly
    The Millers

    Tuesday:
    NCIS
    NCIS: New Orleans
    Person of Interest

    Wednesday:
    Survivor
    Criminal Minds
    New Drama

    Thursday:
    Big Bang Theory
    New Comedy
    Mom
    The Crazy Ones
    Elementary

    Friday:
    Undercover Boss
    Hawaii 5-0
    Blue Bloods

  • Mark Drei

I forgot NCIS: LA on Mondays at 10!

  • Rub

@ Kubukurin: let’s compare both shows:

    – The Mentalist: high(er) syndication value, the top American show in almost all of the international market. Even if it gets yanked from CBS, and they shop it around, there’s a huge chance of selling it again.

    – TGW: low syndication value, marginal dvd-sales, very unsuccesful international distribution. It was the ‘CBS can do art’-show. That effect is waning. Maybe Robin Williams can take over that role with The Crazy Ones for the next 3 years.

  • thatoneguy

This is my fantasy schedule for next season
    Monday

8 – How I Met Your Dad (NEW)
    830 – The Millers
    9 – 2 Broke Girls
    930 – Mom
10 – NEW DRAMA or Intelligence

    Tuesday

    8 – NCIS
    9 – NCIS: NO (NEW)
10 – Person of Interest (LOCK)

    Wednesday

    8 – Survivor
    9 – NCIS: LA
    10 – Criminal Minds

    Thursday

8 – The Big Bang Theory
    830 – NEW COMEDY
    9 – The Crazy Ones
930 – Two and a Half Men (final season)
    10 – NEW DRAMA

    Friday

    8 – Undercover Boss
    9 – Hawaii Five-O (LOCK)
    10 – Blue Bloods

    Sunday

    8 – The Amazing Race
    9 – Elementary
    10 – CSI

I have Person of Interest and Hawaii Five-O as locks for their time slots because in the last 10 years when CBS moves a drama to a new time slot it almost always stays their for at least 2 years barring cancellation. The only exceptions I could find was when the last 3 seasons of Without a Trace aired on 3 different days and a couple of weird ones like Medium and Flashpoint. Anyways I feel much more confident about the dramas then the comedies. I have Mike and Molly as a midseason replacement again but its entirely possible CBS cancels one of TCO, TAAHM or Mom which would cause some rearranging. Its also possible The Good Wife gets renewed but I wouldn’t bet on it plus I think CBS wants to air more new dramas next year.

  • StevenD

I’m interested in what CBS does with their comedy.

Here’s what I’m thinking right now:

8-8:30 How I Met Your Dad
8:30-9 Friends with Better Lives OR The Crazy Ones
    9-9:30 2 Broke Girls
    9:30-10 Mike and Molly
    10-11 Elementary

    Thursday:
    8-8:30 TBBT
    8:30-9 New Comedy
    9-9:30 The Millers
9:30-10 Two and a Half Men (final season)
    10-11 New drama

    Thoughts?

  • StevenD

^^ or if CBS picks up the NCIS spinoff LA could probably move to Monday at 10

  • TheFrenchGuy

    2014-2015 Schedule:

    MONDAY
    8:00 – 2 Broke Girls
    8:30 – NEW COMEDY
    9:00 – HOW I MET YOUR DAD
    9:30 – Mom
    10:00 – Elementary

    TUESDAY
    8:00 – NCIS
    9:00 – NCIS: NEW ORLEANS
    10:00 – Person of Interest

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 – NCIS: Los Angeles
    9:00 – Criminal Minds
    10:00 – CSI

    THURSDAY
8:00 – The Big Bang Theory

    10:00 – Blue Bloods

    SUNDAY

    9:00 – Survivor
    10:00 – The Good Wife

    Feedbacks ?

  • Spen B

As much as I would like to see Person of Interest moved back to Thursdays at 9 where it belongs, this is what I think CBS *will* do (this is not really a fantasy schedule as much as a prediction).

A lot of the placements of the comedies are complete guesses.

    Monday
8:00 New Comedy (How I Met Your Dad)
8:30 Two and a Half Men (final season)
    9:00 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 Mom
    10:00 NCIS: LA

CBS needs a veteran Mondays at 10. CSI is too weak, Criminal Minds is too strong on Wednesdays, there’s already too much going on on Thursdays for Elementary to be moved, and Person of Interest was just moved to Tuesday. NCIS: LA it is.

    Tuesday
    8:00 NCIS
9:00 New Drama (NCIS: New Orleans)
    10:00 Person of Interest

    Wednesday
    8:00 Survivor
    9:00 Criminal Minds
    10:00 New Drama

    Thursday
    8:00 The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 New Comedy
    9:00 The Crazy Ones
    9:30 The Millers
    10:00 Elementary

If CBS does this, 9 PM will probably tank. But they might do it anyway.

    Friday
    8:00 Undercover Boss
    9:00 Hawaii Five-0
    10:00 Blue Bloods

    Sunday
    7:00 60 Minutes
    8:00 The Amazing Race
    9:00 CSI
    10:00 The Good Wife

    Midseason/insurance: Mike & Molly

So two new dramas and two new comedies.

  • thatoneguy

    @ StevenD

The comedy arrangement seems entirely plausible in the scenario where Mom gets cancelled. I definitely don’t think Elementary will get moved to Monday. It’s the weakest drama that’s not on Sun or Fri so its probably the next to get shipped there to get enough episodes for syndication. Monday at 10 will most likely be filled by a new drama, Intelligence, or NCIS: LA.

    @ TheFrenchGuy

The only problem I see is moving Survivor to Sundays. Elementary and CSI are much more likely candidates Survivor is too successful where it is. I also think its more likely that The Good Wife gets cancelled but its possible it gets kept because of that sweet syndication deal.

  • TheFrenchGuy

    @ thatoneguy

The thing is that I don’t think CBS will sacrifice their #2 drama on Monday deathslot. Survivor could still get 2.0+ on Sunday and NCIS: Los Angeles could be a real hit at 8.

  • Isobel

I’m going for the mentalist being cancelled and the good wife renewed

  • AnotherMentalistFan

I think Mentalist S6 will be CSI:Miami S10 this year, being cancelled as the highest rated on CBS Fri-Sun dramas to moving an Mon-Thu dramas here, sadly.
H50-BB are expected to get 100+ episodes and TGW will OK taking Mentalist’s slot next year.
Even Intelligence’s failure can’t increase chance of Mentalist renewal,I see CBS will launch 3,5 hours next fall (2 dramas, on Mondays @10 and one of both Tuesdays @9 or Thursdays @10 and 3 comedies)
But I hope, CBS only launch one drama next fall so Mentalist can be renewed

  • John K.

    @Rub

    I’m dying.
CBS does not own The Mentalist, so even if it did have a higher syndication value, means nothing.
BUT IT DOES NOT. Quite obviously, you are not aware of the 2 million an episode Syndication deal The Good Wife got with Hulu, Amazon and the Hallmark Channel (see Deadline article). That money goes straight to CBS, as they own the show. Would not be the case with additional episodes of the Mentalist.

  • Alex

The Mentalist itself is playing out like this is the last season. They tied up so much stuff and burned so many bridges that I can’t see how the show goes on for a season after this one.

  • DSC

I assume the massive failure of Intelligence bods well for TGW? How does the current count on bubble/canceled shows stand now, VS what it was last season, taking into account how many slots they need to premiere new stuff? Is it still a battle between TGW or TM, or does this intelligence failure mean good news for both of them? if not, does the fact that TGW is younger by a year means it has a better shot, when both its ratings and TM’s are virtually identical?

  • CBSviewer

The Mentalist has a 20-episode order. It looks like the Season/Series Finale will air on Sunday, April 27. It’s renewal chances are going down.

  • Rob

Read today that The Good Wife (first four seasons) was the most viewed tv show on Amazon Prime the last quarter of 2013. Hopefully a lot of people were catching up after all the buzz this season so far and we see some new viewers soon…

  • Catfish

    @CBSviewer:
From where do you have the information, that the mentalist season 6 is only a 20 episodes order? So far I thought they were always taking about 22 episodes?
