How I Met Your Mother final season

In recent years, the only veteran dramas canceled by CBS have been from either Sunday or Friday night, their syndication warehouses. The cancellation bear doesn't see any reason that's going to change this season, and since all four of the current Sunday and Friday dramas would meet the bear before CSI would, it's certain to be renewed.

The cancellation bear has started Intelligence as a "toss up" based on its  Tuesday 9pm special timeslot premiere ratings last week, which were hopeful, but not necessarily indicative of what it's likely to get at 10pm Monday. *The January 13, 10pm regular timeslot premiere ratings (which will only be available after this is written/posted) will likely change that prediction, and certainly get the show into the headline next week. Stay tuned.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

     certain to be renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

It wouldn’t be sacrificing NCIS: LA to a death slot it would be using a strong show to fix a death slot like how they moved Person of Interest to Tuesdays this year. I don’t think its likely NCIS: LA gets moved to Monday it’s probably better suited for Wednesday at 9 (moving Criminal Minds down to 10) but Monday is still a possibility if CBS doesn’t think a new drama can fix that slot. I have no doubt that Survivor would be successful on Sunday but history has shown that CBS doesn’t use Sun and Fri that way they use those slots for shows that are limping towards syndication (Elementary) or older shows riding off into the sunset (CSI). One day I could see Survivor replacing The Amazing Race or Undercover Boss but right now it’s too valuable.

    Dont care cancell hostages

Last I heard, The Mentalist had a 22 episode order. I’m really enjoying the reboot, and even though things look crowded, my hope is that it will survive another year through creative scheduling. The old model obviously doesn’t work well anymore, and
networks are experimenting… launching new shows in the summer (dome), doing half seasons… who knows what else they’ll come up with. Their dramas have flopped so mightily this year that they should think twice about discarding something that works.

    hostages is cancelled

    @ Catfish and Wn

I verified on IMDb and The Mentalist has a 22-episode order.

  • dax5

As much as I love CSI, it needs to be cancelled. 13 seasons is way too long.

  • dax5

Despite the horribly done Red John episode, The Mentalist has been pretty good, but it has been on a long time. I would love to see it renewed, but I also wouldn’t have any problem with it coming to an end.

Intelligence hasn’t been all that good, but then again it just started. It’s on the bubble for me.

  • Herb Finn

CSI still does well on CBS,and internationally – and as they own the show, it’s money in the bank to keep making episodes.

It’s not bad per say, just Survivor won’t be moved to Sunday. Survivor: Cagayan for example is airing 2/26/2014. Which of course is a Wednesday, the network simply won’t move the show due to how successful it is in its current timeslot.

  • Thunder

If CBS do not renew The Mentalist, I hope They are prepared to lose it to another network. No way it finishes after S6.

  • D.

How can you put Intelligence to toss up (with the last 1.1 of rating) and The Mentalist to likely cancellation? (when his last ratings went up)

  • thatoneguy

The thing with The Mentalist is not that its a bad show or has particularly awful ratings. The thing is that a network has to cancel veteran shows to make room for new ones to try and maintain long term success. CBS could keep most of its shows and do well for a while but eventually the bubble will burst and everything will fail at once. I love The Mentalist and its gonna suck to see it go but out of the 4 dramas in the Sun and Fri slots its the one with the most episodes and therefore not as important to keep around.

  • JSG

@D. He has a disclaimer about how the ratings for Intelligence were not available when the column was turned in. Since this is the Internet, “not available at press time” is a bit weird, as it would be really easy just to quickly add an update that Intelligence is certain to be canceled, but I suspect that he wants to save that for next week’s headline.

Sorry. It wasn’t for you ;)

  • JSunkist

    Very nice, CBS! Keep rockin’!

  • Ultima

The thing is that I don’t think CBS will sacrifice their #2 drama on Monday deathslot.

Really? If a network has two failed shows in a row or another network has a hit in the timeslot it’s now a “deathslot?”
