Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from December 30, 2013 - January 12, 2014):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita* (F) final season complete 0.30
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled 1.00
Beauty And The Beast
Hart Of Dixie
Reign :| :| :|
The Tomorrow People :| :| :|
The Originals
Arrow
Supernatural
Vampire Diaries

Given that, through Sunday, the CW hadn't aired any new episodes of shows with a  future, please excuse the cancellation bear for rehashing a post from the Fall.

Given that the CW has 10 hours to program, and typically premieres 3 new hours of programming each Fall, and has 5 hours of veteran shows certain to be renewed, that leaves at most 2 open hours in their Fall schedule for Reign, The Tomorrow People, The 100 and Star Crossed. So the cancellation bear is counting on two of those four shows being canceled.

If America's Next Top Model takes up an hour of the Fall schedule, the CW would have to move a veteran show to a non-October premiere date or cancel a third of those four shows. That's certainly possible.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Shepherd: what the heck are you talking about? Ratings are a fake. What matters is the money studios get. And ratings don’t really mean much. Anyway right now ratings for The Tomorrow People in countries outside the US where it just started airing have been quite high. So ?
Canceling products before having shopped them it’s a fraud.
Canceling shows is selling defective products. Leaving shows without a proper ending.. it’s like selling a book with ripped pages.. and just a couple or more chapters at beginning still readable. Which is a fraud and a crime.

  • frank5869

@Holly: more nonsense… tv shows are products created by large multinational groups. US networks belong with multinational companies mostly the same that own movies production studios just like with TheCW and WarnerBros….
Going around telling that just the US matters it’s silly other than clearly false.
Money it’s money. Do you seriously think that studios managers and its investors care about where the money came from for movies like Skyfall for example? If it was for the US alone they could have told that it was a small success if not a financial failure… BUT the large profit came from the international market outside the US.
    Same goes for others movies.
The same is true for tv shows too.
Studios managers doing dirty business are surely happy about people like you spreading false info like truth.. it’s their lies that they need to keep doing dirty business and justify canceling shows to keep evading taxes and stealing money from investors other than fighting their own little wars inside the groups.
Fact is that they illegal criminal mafia style actions damage products quality and cause the whole market to be a huge mess.

  • Holly

So…is it a crime to sell book 1 in a series without having book 5 already written and published?

And who exactly is being defrauded anyway?

  • Jeff (Canada)

Guys, just ignore him. He’s obviously a crazy person.

  • frank5869

@Holly: canceling a tv show after 1 or 2 episodes, not even completing a full first season and not giving a proper ending it’s not like selling a full complete first book in a series!
It’s really selling a book with most of its pages ripped off.
And that is a crime. Selling defective products is a crime.
An incomplete book it’s just like a defective product.
If a DVD/Blu-Ray movie stops after you played 10% or 30% of any movie that would be a defective product too.
Why do you want to justify their criminal actions?
Unless you are involved and you work for them there really is no reason.
Do you like paying for defective products ?
Are you happy about rich managers getting richer committing frauds by selling defective products ?
Would you buy a defective car then ? And would you justify the managers behind such a defective car even if it caused yours or others death, uh ?
It’s just the same. Yes, books, tv shows, movies if defective don’t cause people death.. but then what? For this reason everything must be accepted and these rich managers must be allowed to keep stealing money like this selling defective products, cheating and not giving a damn about products quality and their customers ?

    @Jeff (Canada),

Just having a bit of fun. Don’t mind me.

  • frank5869

@Jeff (Canada): of course.. now go on with insults… as usual on forums.. When you can’t have someone shut up because you don’t want him/her to keep writing what must not be written and discussed.. of course a nickname appears and starts insulting, telling to ignore the guy and so on.
Silly lame tactics. Very boring old tactics.

  • Holly Quixote

But WHO exactly is being defrauded?

  • starship

    @Holly Quixote

It’s obvious the person is a deranged lunatic whose favorite show got cancelled midway or something…Good thing is the crazies are few and far between because if everyone whose show got cancelled started writing deranged essays on here, this place will become unbearable lol

  • CreacK

Star Crossed seems too Twilighty and has a Monday at 8 slot, so I think thats a goner. Hopefully with a kinda developed fanbase (its gotten .6’s on Wednesdays, Star Crossed has had nothing so far), Tomorrow People can survive enough and get renewed. I havent heard much about The 100, so Im not sure how much other people know about it so Im on the edge about it right now. As for Reign, I hope Tomorrow People doesnt get canceled for it. It doesnt really fit with the rest of the shows that will get renewed (its too real-worldly, even though its set in the past, theres no superheroes, vampires, aliens, supernatural stuff, etc) and Tomorrow People fits in with that. Also, I love how The Originals, a freshman, was grouped in with the veterans and called one.

  • merrranga

calling this guy a deranged lunatic is an insult to the dude on the Fox post raving that the government is manipulating you from the ‘truths’ in Enlisted.

this guy is obviously merely insane.

  • Brandy

@Creak, “Reign dosent fit in with the superhero/scifi/genre stuff”.Neither do CD & HoD yet they were renewed and HoD will be renewd again. While yes,CW is moving away from having all teen girl girly shows,Pedowitz said he wouldn’t completely abondon that type of programming. If they wanted to,they wouldn’t have renewed CD or HoD or picked up Reign or have Painted Girls,The Perfectionists,Revengers in development.TTI is easily replaced by Flash or Hourman.Reign also does have supernatrual elements with “ghost” Clarrisa,Nostradomus & his propehecies. Also, what matters most is the cost of the show and if it makes enough money to justify renewing it and Neilson ratings no personal preferences or show x got cancelled for showy.zRight now,Reign is doing better than TTP in ratings, retention from high rated leadin, online viewing, social media,DVr,ect so it will most be renewed over TTP if TTP dosent really improve or if Reign dosent fall.

  • Brandy

@Creak, no network besides CBS can or should or does have only type of show on.A sucsessful network has a variety of programming ,diversity in programming to appeal to wide audience

  • Midnight

I don’t see why everyone is assuming the CW must premiere three new shows next fall. That may be the pattern, but it isn’t the rule. The CW will program as it sees fit.

I also don’t see why everyone is assuming Reign is certain and The Tomorrow People is dead. 0.6 is not significantly better than 0.5, it’s only 0.1 better. If Reign has higher ratings at the end of the season, then yes, it will be renewed. But there is a lot of time between now and May, and both Star-Crossed and the 100 have yet to premiere, so the situation is very fluid. Bill has it right in labeling both Reign and TTP as bubble shows.

  • starship

OMG, I had missed that one. I take it back, now that guy is a deranged lunatic, indeed, this one is quite tame in comparison (for now)…

  • Brandy

@Midnight yes 0.6 -0.5 is a small difference but look at the two shows patterns:TTP 0.9 to 0.5 in eight weeks with a good leadin. Not great retention.Reign 0.8 to 0.6 rising to two 0.7 in eight weekswith a good leadin.( not great retention but reccently better than TTPs).TTP Likley won’t do 0.5-0.6 on Mon with a untried show as its leadin. Also, ratings aren’t the only thing CW looks at :Reign does better in online viewing, social media,DVr,A/W18-34 demo numbers,on iTunes, word of mouth, ect than TTP.The fact TTP was moved away from Arrows leadin says it wasnt doing well enough to stay there while Reign kept its slot.Thats why people say Reign is certain renewal and TTP is dead.
CW has premiered three new fall show for the last three years and will continue that next season since CD,BatB are certain to be cancelled,Nikita’s ended,TTP not doing so hot unless SC ,The 100 are huge hits and are renewd for fall. But you’re right,cw will schedule as they see fit.

  • Brandy

@Midnight there’s also the fact that CW supports Reign-sent the cast to the PCAs when they won, best timeslot/leadin,lots and lots of promotion. Then there’s Tvline upgrading Reign to “a safe bet for renewal” while TTP is ” too early to tell”.An 0.5 in the fall behind one of the best leadins and so far declining most every week is not good for TTP.

  • SWW

@Brandy You might want to check the ratings TTP only hit .5 once and the weeks before it , it was climbing up just like Reign. Reign just had a better mid finale. That’s why TTP is a bubble show. Also, TTP has done really well international therefore that could cover its future expense. TV International is just as important as in the US. There have been show that were mediocre success in the US and big International and that’s why they go more seasons. The CW might very well renew both Reign and TTP.

  • Sedara

i found The 100 book in my nearest bookstore a couple of days ago. did the book is based from tv series or tv series is based on the book?

  • Swiftnissity

The TV show is loosely based on the 1st book. On twitter the author mentioned that they are going in their own direction.
