Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from December 30, 2013 - January 12, 2014):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Enlisted (F) 0.34
Raising Hope (F) 0.39
The Mindy Project :| :| :| 0.63
Dads de facto canceled 0.73
Brooklyn Nine-Nine :) :) :) :) 0.73
Bones (F)     0.73

Bob's Burgers renewed 1.19
Family Guy      1.41
The Simpsons renewed 1.65
Glee renewed
Sleepy Hollow renewed

Many commenters asked "What ratings could Fox have expected from Enlisted with that scheduling?". The cancellation bear would have them note that in renewal and cancellation decisions expectations are irrelevant Fan Excuse Bingo play. For freshman shows ratings are all that matter, and the ratings for Enlisted make it certain to be canceled.

One of the few shows that the bear currently disagrees with Bubble Watch about, Brooklyn 9-9, won a couple Golden Globe awards on Sunday. If it's renewed, as the bear predicts, the confused will exclaim "Awards matter!". The bear will note the show's relative ratings and exclaim "Confirmation bias!" (or "Coincidence!", take your pick).

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The failure of Enlisted is one more example of the government controlling mass media consumption through a mixture of timeslot manipulation and subliminal advertising.

All must resist their nefarious scheming.

You must view Enlisted. The messages contained within speak to fundamental truths that the government is afraid of you learning, for it might foster the seeds of irreversible change in favor of the people and away from the construct that seeks to control our lives.

All who stand in the way of truth shall be broken when the revolution is completed.

    You’ve been warned.

  • Jeff (Canada)

That bear photo really should have been used for NBC, not Fox. :)

Mindy’s prospects just got a little better I suppose, with Enlisted having premiered horribly.

  • omabin

Why are the ratings from last week’s Bones not being included?

  • JulioC

Why doesn’t Bones have a renew/cancel index number?

  • Bill Gorman

“Why are the ratings from last week’s Bones not being included?”
Why doesn’t Bones have a renew/cancel index number?

Because, as they say, mistakes were made.

    And corrected!

  • Ryan

First: The bear is almost always right.

Second: It seems early to be calling Fan Excuse Bingo on a show that has aired only one episode.

Third: I’m going to assume that I was one of the 5 people who watched this show. I am not planning on watching it again, but I have seen worse premier episodes.

  • Ted Craig

Enlisted’s problem is that it’s another example of “a good idea for a movie.”

  • Bradley

Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be renewed because of those Golden Globe wins. Fox doesn’t get a lot of that kind of awards recognition.

  • One @ Ted Craig

Enlisted’s “problem” is that the vast majority of television audiences were duped by the subliminal advertising campaign implemented against it. You and Ryan are clearly among this group.

  • Percy

Hopefully Almost Human and Brooklyn Nine Nine are renewed!

  • psychic

“Enlisted’s “problem” is that the vast majority of television audiences were duped by the subliminal advertising campaign implemented against it. You and Ryan are clearly among this group.”
I don’t dispute that there was “subliminal advertising” urging viewers not to see Enlisted, but I would ask why Fox would encourage people against watching their own show?

  • psychic

Ah. I’ve read the first post and have realized that apparently the government doesn’t want us to realize the awesome secrets contained within the nuanced performances and subtle social commentaries contained within Enlisted. I’ve been enlightened. (Enlightened, coincidentally another show that was probably cancelled because of subliminal advertising.)

  • Jeff (Canada)

Enlisted’s problem is that I didn’t find it funny when I watched the preview clip for it last year. There are no American ads for it in Canada on the channel it airs on here, and my opinion is the exact same as most people – it’s not a good show. Get off your soapbox please.

  • were123

Almost Human scored a 2.0 today. Should that rating be kept on the finals (or adjust up) then the show should be a likely renewal

  • r0ckmypants

@Jeff (Canada) – “and my opinion is the exact same as most people – it’s not a good show.”

It got good reviews, but ok.

  • mark

enlisted was great and funny. u people are insane. hidden messages and govt bs. its A CHEESY SITCOM WEIRDOS. please get a job and get off govt handouts.

  • One @ psychic (part 1) and Jeff (“Canada”) (part 2)

    Part 1
Fox was paid by the government in the exact amount that will cover the failure of Enlisted. I’m currently working to expose the trail.

    Part 2
Clearly, if you really are Canadian, then the Canadian government is more in league w/ the American government than I realized.

  • psychic

But, why would Fox greenlight Enlisted, or why would the government allow Fox to greenlight it, or why would it be allowed to get past the planning stage at all, if it’s so vitally important to the revolution that the government wants to cover up???

  • Jeff (Canada)

Either you’re pulling off one hell of a satirical rant, or there’s some kind of issues going on. If it’s the latter, then I hope you can get some government-assisted aid or something. If it’s the former, then carry on!

  • One @ Jeff (Canada)

While I do indulge in my share of conspiracy theory mongering, some of the above is also a grieving mechanism. It feels good to have something other than simple audience idiocy to blame, and I’m not one to play standard Fan Excuse Bingo. See also my Last Resort rantings from Fall 2012. They’re very instructive of what I’m doing this day.
