Many commenters asked "What ratings could Fox have expected from Enlisted with that scheduling?". The Cancellation Bear would have them note that in renewal and cancellation decisions expectations are irrelevant Fan Excuse Bingo play. For freshman shows ratings are all that matter, and the ratings for Enlisted make it certain to be canceled.

One of the few shows that the bear currently disagrees with Bubble Watch about, Brooklyn 9-9, won a couple Golden Globe awards on Sunday. If it's renewed, as the bear predicts, the confused will exclaim "Awards matter!". The bear will note the show's relative ratings and exclaim "Confirmation bias!" (or "Coincidence!", take your pick).

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Bill

    I know this is pure nitpicking, but since only the 2014 ratings matter from now until the end of the season, there really only should be an (F) next to Bones not (some F) since all of its 2014 episodes will – presumably – air on Fridays.

    Reading executive tea leaves has always been a passion of mine ;) and based on Reilly’s comments at the TCAs the other day I’d say that both Brooklyn 99 and Mindy will get renewed while Dads and Enlisted are dead (but then we already knew that).

  • @ ONE & psychic

    Enlisted will be cancelled and its not the gov/t’s fault. It was terribly terrrible. As much as I wanted to find it funny. I cringed for 22 mins plus commercials. There was too much reaching. Even the good jokes had poor timing. Parker Young single handedly saved the episode. Once they saw his ability to emote the writers should have dialed back on the remedial-overly explanitory dialogue. It was so forced. They look like they had fun and at the end of the day when Fox pulls the plug, that and the paychecks are all that matter.

    Why would the gov/t work against Enlisted? If anything wouldn’t it be used to desensitize and disarm people about the thought of War by making them laugh about it since killing, losing life or limb is not funny on its own? They did postpone it during the potential Syri@ issue to Jan 10th. Then promoted it during one of the highest rated football games of the season right into the eyes and ears of Middle America who have the highest percentage of enlistees and family or friends in armed forces.

    There is no conspiracy. People didn’t watch it because they were too busy watching H.5-0.
    One & psychic you guys are funny though.
    @fake me out Hilarious!

  • Kenny

    I really enjoyed Enlisted and SAVE Raising Hope, get rid of the terrible Mindy Project and put Raising Hope in Mindy`s place.

  • Marc

    Dads is going to be the show that suprises you all!

    It will be renewed….

  • Oli

    Do you think that Kevin Reilly’s abandonment of pilot season and commitment to year round programming will have a positive effect on bubble shows. For example a situation where shows like Mindy Project are renewed as a show to put out May through September?

  • IagreeWithTheBear

    Looks about right to me.

  • Jeff (Canada)

    @Oli

    I think it’ll become harder for us to predict whether or not Fox will renew a show, until it is officially renewed or canceled. So I think we can expect a lot more Fox shows showing up on the bubble next year.

  • PRW

    Too bad Fox has already said Enlisted will show all 13 episodes. Pretty sure if ratings stay steady or even rise it will return next season.

  • LarryH

    Enlisted is FUNNY!!! Come on FOX! See how Enlisted does when paired with Brooklyn Nine-Nine!!!

  • David

    The Golden Globe awards won’t directly help Brooklyn 99 get a renewal, but it could cause a small uptick in ratings that would boost the chances of a renewal. I guess we will see with tonight’s ratings.

  • queeneeuq

    At least Mindy’s fine

  • Aaron

    As much as I love listening to crazy rants. I watched Enlisted on Hulu over the weekend and I enjoyed it as much as I enjoy a good sitcom.

  • Edward

    Based on one episode so far, Enlisted is already on my watch list. Funny and endearingly sweet, not easy for a military comedy.

  • StevenD

  • dragonfoxmem

    winning some awards is only a boosted market for ratings…

    If Brooklyn 9-9’s ratings increased, it would be renewed for sure…

  • Isobel

    Have been with the bear on Brooklyn 99, Tom’s awesome but he can be a little harsh with cancellations, with two shows already off fox and four other shows worse than Brooklyn 99 it’s safe.
