Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from December 30, 2013 - January 12, 2014):

Many commenters asked "What ratings could Fox have expected from Enlisted with that scheduling?". The cancellation bear would have them note that in renewal and cancellation decisions expectations are irrelevant Fan Excuse Bingo play. For freshman shows ratings are all that matter, and the ratings for Enlisted make it certain to be canceled.

One of the few shows that the bear currently disagrees with Bubble Watch about, Brooklyn 9-9, won a couple Golden Globe awards on Sunday. If it's renewed, as the bear predicts, the confused will exclaim "Awards matter!". The bear will note the show's relative ratings and exclaim "Confirmation bias!" (or "Coincidence!", take your pick).

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Sorry to break it to the Mindy Truthers, but the show’s very much in jeopardy.

Kevin Reilly’s equivocating yesterday should not be read as a vote of confidence. His key phrase: “the ratings are not where they should be.”

  • Hey

I agree with whoever said to put Brooklyn nine nine and enlisted together. I think that would make for a great hour of comedy. I know it wouldn’t happen but I would move new girl to Friday just because this season is so awful (or at least get rid of Coach)

DADS seems like the little show doing just good enough to survive, getting a 1.5 against strong competition, and matching or out ranking every comedy on Fox outside of NewGirl she got what a 1.6 last tuesday.

I still say they let it move to SUN as the lead out of Family Guy.

I could also see a summer schedule airing New episodes With Dads/RaisingHope/Mindy Project/and New Girl repeats,

I saw “Enlisted” and it has hella potential. I don’t see why FOX didn’t have more faith in it and put it on Tues replaceing the God-awful Dads.

Enlisted had the strongest premier episode for a sitcom I’ve seen all year. Brooklyn 99 din’t hook me until the third episode or so. Dads is terrible. If they moved Enlisted into the Dads slot it would probably do a lot better…

Nice try. This show falls short. Cancel it so the cast and crew get a chance to go out for pilot season to find other gigs.

What is the deadline for renewal or cancellation of Almost Human? Does anyone know. This is the first show I have been really interested in a very long time. Would hate to see it go!

  • HV

After looking at Mindy’s ratings for today, I highly doubt that it has a chance at renewal.

Wow… just watched Enlisted and as a Veteran… I got to say that I’m actually somewhat offended. I’m really hard to offend and this was just pure garbage. Sure, it’s been a while since I’ve been in, but I’m pretty sure they haven’t relaxed the standards to the point where a 300lb black guy can grow a beard and lay down in war games. With the pathetic attempt to rip off Stripes at the same time this just… was… really bad. Geoff Stultz is a funny actor and he was good in the Finder. But, this was so bad… I hope whoever greenlit this project gets fired and then drummed out of Hollywood and we never hear from them again. In my opinion (and if you’re still reading then maybe you care), this show was a slap in the face to all the men and women currently serving at home and abroad. That’s all I got. I will… watch the next few episodes until it’s canceled though, for some reason, it’s like 5 car pile up and can’t not look. That’s about all I got. No Gov’t conspiracies or anything else, just think it’s really bad. Better than Glee… but I hate musicals.

Enlisted was truly horrible. I was enlisted in the U.S. military. I don’t think they got one detail right. The haircuts, open shirts, no hat worn outside are all outside of 35-10. Enlisted don’t talk to officers that way either. It’s like the whole thing was written by some hippy teen that thinks he knows it all.

I watched Enlisted and will continue to watch until it’s cancelled. It’s a great premise and far closer to reality than most people would assume a sitcom can get. But, as a former soldier who served on TRADOC posts prior to 9/11 we use to pull some of the most ridiculous stunts/pranks/etc. that you can imagine. Never pulled a couch behind a bradley, but close!

@Ultima: Candygram for Mongo! Candygram for Mongo! (Cue two bars of “Merrily We Roll Along”) ~smiles~

  • Theoacme

Enlisted critics: It is supposed to be a comedy – if you want accurate military, and comedy, in the same show, you have to go all the way back to M*A*S*H, and I can’t think of any other military comedy that was accurate (Major Dad’s and Gomer Pyle’s writers should have been sentenced to sixteen weeks at Parris Island, and a field trip to the Changjin Reservoir and Peleliu, ’cause those shows were simply awful!)

The Cancellation Bear will have its way with Enlisted, never fear, so relax, ignore Enlisted, and watch the sexiest show on broadcast on Thursdays, after the Olympics, Fifty Shades of Grey’s Anatomy ~giggles~

  • Aly

On paper, Enlisted sounds like the kind of show Bill Lawrence should have made, like Scrubs meets M.A.S.H. Plus he would seek actual military input just like he used doctors for advising on Scrubs. In execution, it was…not good…granted, I’m basing that off previews.

  • Alex J

I am hoping Enlisted gets canned soon so Us and Them can get an earlier release.
