CBS today announced premiere dates for its two scripted summer event series—UNDER THE DOME and EXTANT, both produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television.

UNDER THE DOME returns for its sophomore season on Monday, June 30 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT).  The premiere episode will be written by Stephen King, whose bestselling novel the series is based on. UNDER THE DOME was last summer's #1 program, averaging 15.06 million viewers and 3.9/11 in adults 18-49, ranking as the most-watched scripted summer series in 21 years.

UNDER THE DOME tells the story of a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome.  The town's inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from, and if and when it will go away.

EXTANT, starring Academy Award winner Halle Berry, premieres Wednesday, July 2 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT).

EXTANT is a mystery thriller about a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in outer space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history.

UNDER THE DOME is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Amblin Television.  Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, Neal Baer, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Stacey Snider, Jack Bender and Brian K. Vaughan are executive producers.

EXTANT is a co-production of CBS Television Studios and Amblin Television.  Steven Spielberg, Greg Walker, Mickey Fisher, who wrote the script, Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank will serve as executive producers.  Halle Berry will serve as co-executive producer.  The series will be distributed domestically by CBS Television Distribution and worldwide by CBS Studios International.

Dome’s ratings are gonna be through the roof.

  • THE OLD MAN

Hopefully both will be ratings winners (UTD again)

  • CBSviewer

So maybe Criminal Minds is moving ?

  • skyfi

    “Hopefully” for whom?

  • Dan S

Interesting that Extant is going to displace CM from its Wed berth. I would’ve expected Elementary to get replaced by Extant on Thur & maybe move it to Sun.

  • TVMAN

Under the Dome was probably the worst primetime soap opera. I tried HARD to like this show, but the horrible acting and plot made quit it 2/3 through. I did see the finale tho… Not sure why anyone would want to return to watch after how they ended S1.

  • JR35

Even thought it’s not a GREAT show, I will be watching.

Why is everyone talking about in season shows being moved for Extant when Extant is a summer show? Under the Dome didn’t change CBS’s Monday 10PM in season scheduling, why would Extant?

  • Jagger Dagger

I had read the Steven King books a few years earlier and loved it, but the tv show I just couldn’t get into (including the bad acting).

  • gary

what about Cam gigandet series? Reckless

  • rgxx

Wow – later than I thought – but okay. Can’t wait – hopefully the story remains interesting – as now they won’t have the book to follow.

  • r0ckmypants

@gary – “what about Cam gigandet series? Reckless”

No information yet, but seems likely it will replace Undercover Boss on Fridays around late March/early April (unless they have quietly decided to push it to summer).

  • rgxx

oohh – Extent sound interesting too..wow this Summer will be better than ever:

    The Dome & 24 on Mondays & Extent on Wed’s – cool!

  • rgxx

*Extant – (spelling correction button needed)

I hope the so called big hit UTD returns down a lot.

    That’s what I was thinking.

Extant on a wednesday? idk about that
UTD ended so dumb i dont really care when it comes back

    @CBSviewer
So maybe Criminal Minds is moving ?

I would expect Criminal Minds to move to 10pm and CSI moving to the timeslot of a canceled Friday/Sunday show.

    For example…

Monday – sitcom block, Under the Dome
Tuesday – NCIS, NCIS LA, PoI
Wednesday – Big Brother, Extant, Criminal Minds
Thursday – TBBT + sitcom, Big Brother, Elementary
Friday – Undercover Boss, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods/CSI
    Saturday – repeats, 48 Hours
Sunday – 60 Minutes, Big Brother, Unforgettable, The Mentalist/CSI

I’m not suggesting The Good Wife is going to be canceled, btw, but CBS usually puts it on an extended hiatus during the summer.

Based on the relased schedule so far, it would seem that CBS is going to extend Undercover Boss into May.

Maybe Reckless will replace Intelligence on Mondays?

  • Jami

Under the Dumber S2 OMG that show was awful. CBS viewers will watch anything except Hostages and Intelligence.
