Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (8-9pm – 6.3 million and 2.2/6 in AD18-49):

During the 8 o’clock hour, ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2.2/6) took second place in its slot to CBS’ top-rated NCIS among Adults 18-49, outdelivering NBC’s Biggest Loser by 38% (1.6/5) and Fox’s comedies by 69% (Dads/Brooklyn Nine-Nine = 1.3/4).  In addition, the ABC freshman drama led its slot by 50% over NCIS in Men 18-34 (1.8/6 vs. 1.2/5) to hold the #1 series position in the hour for its 12th consecutive original airing.   It also stood as the #1 TV show on Tuesday with Men 18-34 and the top-rated broadcast program with Teens 12-17 and Kids 2-11.

·         S.H.I.E.L.D. built for its 2nd straight original telecast in the Fast Affiliate Adult 18-49 ratings Adults 18-49 (+5% - 2.2/6 vs. 2.1/6) to hit its best preliminary number since November – since 11/26/13.

·         Based on Nielsen’s Live + 7 Day ratings for original airings (9/23-12/29/13), ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is Tuesday’s #1 TV show this season in Adults 18-49 (4.6 rating), leading NBC’s The Voice by 2% (4.5 rating) and CBS’ NCIS by 12% (4.1 rating).

The Goldbergs (9-9:30pm – 4.9 million and 1.8/5 in AD18-49):

In the 9pm half-hour, ABC’s The Goldbergs grew for its 3rd consecutive first-run airing in Adults 18-49 (+6%) to deliver a 14-week high – since 10/8/13.  For the 2nd week in row, the ABC freshman comedy defeated Fox’s New Girl (3.3 million and 1.6/4) in the half-hour in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 to stand as Tuesday’s #1 comedy.

·         The Goldbergs once again delivered big time-period improvement year to year, growing the half-hour by 58% in Total Viewers and 38% in Adults 18-49 over original comedy programming on the year-ago night (Happy Endings = 3.1 million and 1.3/3 on 01/15/13).

  • THE OLD MAN

I smell renewal for The Goldbergs

  • Kelly

Yay The Goldbergs! Little kiss on the shoulder to put the envy away. XOXO

  • diegobitch

ABC mentioning Apt 23′s last ever aired on TV episode in Trophy Wife’s paragraph.

  • Jagger Dagger

The Goldbergs reminds me of the first season of The Middle. A new show that was on the ratings bubble but slowly gained a nice fan base.

  • Dan S

It’s just too bad TW isn’t getting a ratings bump from Goldbergs. Once it goes head to head with B9-9 on Fox it’ll likely go below a 1

  • solverex

If a 14 week high of 1.8 is reason to celebrate, the bar at ABC has been set pretty low. Goldbergs is pretty much a flop with those numbers.

  • CrimTV

    @solverex

You’ve obviously been asleep for the past 2 seasons.

  • solverex

Super Fun Night pulls in the same ratings for ABC as Goldbergs yet that’s considered a flop while Goldbergs is considered a success?

  • Ann

Not to play retentionista, but Goldbergs is far more impressive than SFN which has the gift of the Modern Family lead in. Goldbergs has an underperforming and incompatible lead in. So, yes. Fans of Goldbergs should be thrilled. It’s also a pity TW doesn’t do better. It’s hilarious and has an amazing ensemble. It would have been a hit if the morons at abc had put it with Modern Family where it belonged.

  • Juan

I really wish Trophy Wife did better, it’s such a great comedy.

  • Aly

I’m torn. I really enjoy the Goldbergs but man my husband and I did not like last night’s teaser commercial. No, everybody does not have an overbearing mom. I don’t. He doesn’t (so no stereotypical MIL hate from me, either.)

It’s lead-in isn’t under performing when you consider what it’s up against (who are these boring NCIS fans, and how long before there’s an NCIS Cheboygan spin-off that’s still a monster success?) It is however a bad match-up, although not as bad as when NBC had Hannibal paired with its comedy line-up.

Trophy Wife…I’d blame the title but Desperate Housewives still got viewers. I can’t comment on the show itself, but what little I’ve seen didn’t impress me.

  • Rod

The network would be idiotic to let Goldbergs go in its first year! Best new comedy of 2013-14!

  • Anne

ABC should move Goldbergs to Wendesday next season and stop with the comedies on Tuesdays. Focus on comedies on Wendesday and Friday. Move Shark Tank to Thursday’s 8pm troubled slot if you have to,,…but bring back TGIF.

  • mel + laurie miller

Goldbergs a funny and refreshing comedy, no loud and cantankerios elders trying to control family matters, enjoy all cast, particularly like George Segal part as a loving and caring grandpa. We raised our children mostly on long Island, so we can relate.

  • solverex

Moving Goldbergs to Wednesdays would pull in the same ratings that Back in the Game & Super Fun Night get.
I don’t understand why many figure ratings would suddenly skyrocket on this night other than the show being a poor man’s copy of the vastly superior “The Middle”. If anything, moving The Goldbergs to Wednesdays would showcase just how bad it really is next to The Middle.
If anything, it should move to Fridays if it winds up getting renewed.

  • solverex

ABC would be smart to cancel The Neighbors and sandwich The Goldbergs between Last Man Standing and Shark Tank in the fall if they renew it and try for two new sitcoms on Wednesdays.

  • Dan

The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife should have aired on Wedbesdays from the start then moved to Tuesdays during their second seasons.

  • Dan

@Solverex – So basically kill The Goldbergs the same way ABC killed The Neighbors. Moving The Goldbergs to Fridays for season 2 would create an identical situation to what The Neighbors is in now. The Goldbergs should air at 8:30 Wed next season and a new comedy could air post Modern Family.

  • solverex

@Dan—The Goldbergs is too similar to The Middle to succeed after it, right down to the Barry character being a blatant male version of Sue. It would utterly bomb if it were put there.
Placing two sitcoms that are too alike is not a good idea. Same with Trophy Wife—people seem to be clamoring for it to air after Modern Family, but that too is just a poor man’s copy that show.
Airing both those shows on Wednesday would only magnify how they’re simply lesser copies of the preceding hits in spades.
Friday would work for The Goldbergs if it’s renewed and a certain cancellation is the only logical choice for the pathetic Trophy Wife.

  • MichaelB

I think ABC should try out The Goldbergs after Modern Family and see what it can get. Seems to me like it would be a slam dunk fit on that night with The Middle, and Modern Family all being the similar type of single camera Family comedies.
