Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from December 30, 2013 - January 19, 2014):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita* (F) final season complete 0.30
Beauty And The Beast  0.52
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled 0.63
Hart Of Dixie      0.87
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.87
The Originals      1.56
Arrow      1.56
Supernatural      1.73
Reign :| :| :|
Vampire Diaries

The cancellation bear always counsels fans to ignore what TV executives say, and only pay attention to what they do. So, when the CW announced their mid-season scheduling changes and Reign maintained its plum Thursday 9pm timeslot after The Vampire Diaries you might guess that the bear would look at that action and predict that the show would be renewed. While he can't argue with those that made that leap, he'd prefer to wait for more of the CW spring ratings before making any changes. Plus, the bear's got more than 10 CW related headlines to write before it's time to hibernate, so he can bide his time.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Agree with the bear’s decision to wait and see with regard to Reign, but I definitely think its chances are good for renewal. The numbers will tell soon enough.

  • Gloria

We love Reign—please don’t let it be canceled.

  • Dahne

I am rooting for Reign. Not because I watch it but because I was sure it would be canceled based on the premise alone. Nice to see that the CW can have some variety even if Reign is not really thriving, more like hanging on to the cliff by its fingernails.

  • s0303

i’m liking reign a lot…I think it will be back. the cw seems to like the show too…

  • smelt

I started the season really rooting for TTP but after several episodes on Reign and the fact that Reign is doing so much better than BATB the season before and even TTP, I have to give it to Reign.
On top of the fact that I grew to really like the show,.

  • Shepherd

Ya, I can’t wait for the new CW shows to premier and get some episodes under their belts. We’re pretty much in a holding pattern on making predictions until then. :(

  • Eelna

As long Reign doesnt fall to a 0.5, like TTP already did, it is getting renewed for sure.

  • tabacha

PLEASE. As if the bear will be writing 10 different CW headlines, try 10 different versions of the same headline. ;)

  • Tom

The Bear knows that both the Secret Circle and BATB experienced substantial declines in viewership during their last four or five programs. Reign currently has a season average of 0.65/175MM. BATB had roughly the same numbers at this point of its first season. The Secret Circle was even higher. So, since Reign clearly isn’t adding viewers, it isn’t much of a stretch to predict that it will end the season with the same marginal ratings as its predecessors.

  • Valentin

Well The CW loves a lot of their shows, remember BATB last year? See what happenened when it lost its TVD’s lead-in.

  • Brandy

@Valentin,it wasn’t just loosing VD leadin that hurt BatBs ratings. It moved nights & shows usually drop when moved ,the fact that it’s going up against hits Voice,Blacklist,Sleepy Hollow and that Mon has been a trouble spot for CW for two to three seasons and also many BatB fans aren’t happy with the direction/writing of the show this season as opposed to last.Even HoD fell to regular 0.4s after moving back to Mon when in it’s first two seasons it got 0.5-0.6 mainly & one 0.4 HoD at 0.4-0.6 isn’t a good leadin though it’s ratings are steady. Not to mention how incompatible HoD & BatB are:HoD is a dramadey,a medical procedural,a romantic comedy.BatB is a romantic genre fantasy show.

  • Patrick Ausgewahlt

I honestly think Reign could do okay on Friday. It clearly has a much older audience than the Vampire Diaries. I think it will probably get a season 2 as I don’t see The Tomorrow People, Beauty and the Beast, of the Carrie Diaries getting renewed. I think it depends if the new shows flop.

  • Adir

    TTP Is great show!

  • Dan

I stil dont see Reign getting renewed but its not in as much danger in geting cancelled either.

Its on the bubble in the same way with similar retention out of TVD as TTP is with Arrow. So The Tomorrow People and Reign are on the bubble with Star Crossed and The 100. TTP and Reign’s chances are impacted by Star Crossed and The 100’s success. My guess is that if The 100 is a hit TTP, Reign and Star Crossed (which I expect to not do well) will all be axed.

Supernatural, The Orignals, Arrow, The Vampire Diaries, and Hart of Dixie will all be renewed for next season in a schedule that looks like this.

8:00 New Drama (Or returning bubble show 100, TTP, Reign)
    9:00 Supernatural

    8:00 The Originals
    9:00 New Drama

    8:00 Arrow
    9:00 New Drama

    8:00 The Vampire Diaries
    9:00 New Drama

    8:00 Hart of Dixie
    9:00 ANTM

My bet is that Supernatural will be moved to Mondays at 9 to help that struggling slot out and a bubble returning show will proceed it. Could be The 100, Reign, TTP, Who knows? Likely 1/4 shows from this season will land in that slot and the other 3 will be cancelled. I expect The Originals, Arrow and The Vampire Diaries to all remain in their current slots and lead out into new dramas. And I think only 3 will be on the fall schedule. Hart of Dixie will get a final full season airing on Fridays and likely ANTM will air solely in the fall on fridays.

Of course Nikita is done and BATB and Carrie Diaries will be axed. Neither bubble drama is cancelled officially yet but they will be.

Reign is a tossup until we get new ratings, but it is a network favorite. Mostly depends how midseason goes

  • gerry

last year all the batb fans went on and on about how having tvd as a lead in didn’t help the show at all. they went on about how it would be moving in with hod and how well they would pair because they were both romantic shows. if cw had moved batb away from tvd last year, they wouldn’t have the clunker to deal with this season.

even though i’m thinking reign will likely get renewed, it would have made more sense for cw to move that away from tvd as well to see if it would have traction somewhere else on the schedule. i really like ttp but i have a feeling it won’t survive its move. so unless both new dramas hit, i see reign as being renewed simply to be next year’s batb/secret circle.

  • Ally Oop

I would love to know actual numbers of viewers Reign, Tomorrow People, Hart of Dixie, Beauty & the Beast and Carrie Diaries are getting online and on hulu. Not just heresay numbers like I’ve been getting via site commentators. I’m curious to see how many people watch online verses pvr verses live tv.

  • iSayso

Right now the poor bear is just having trouble processing all those empty CW calories but come hibernation time, I suspect he’ll chow down on all the weakling game.

  • tedtalks

@Ally Oop online views for cw shows are under million for all shows not Originals and TVD, those 2 shows they gave actual numbers, safe to assume if they were over million they would have included them in press release also
