The 2014 ratings for Almost Human indicate it's likely to be renewed, but Fox's scheduling of the show, and their silence, point the other direction. The two together are keeping the Cancellation Bear's prediction at "toss up" for now.

Fox scheduled an episode of the show as the only original scripted episode aired on the network for the week ending December 22. It's being bumped for the next two weeks for the 2 hour finale of Sleepy Hollow (after originally being scheduled to precede the penultimate episode) and the premiere of The Following.  Perhaps both are explainable for scheduling logistics purposes, but that's typically not how networks schedule shows they plan on renewing.

When the show returns on February 3 it will have only a few episodes remaining of its original order and Fox has yet to announce either a back order, or what will happen to its timeslot after its 13 episodes finish. That should be worrying to fans.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I wish Almost Human’s ratings were better. It’s a good show but for some reason isn’t connecting. I won’t blame FOX if they pull it. TV is a business, but I will miss the interaction between Kennex and Dorian. I love their buddy cop vibe.

  • LeobenConoy

Its great a show, much better than Fox’s last big Scifi outing, ‘Terra Nova’, and it will be a shame if they dont renew it.

  • One

Stop ignoring Enlisted, lest ye all suffer the wrath, either by my hand or that of an uncaring government.

    You’ve been warned.

  • Jeff (Canada)

If Rake is a hit I can see them moving it to Mondays next season to plug that hole, so they won’t need Almost Human for a second season.

  • Shepherd

I’m still waiting for the time when I can watch AH in its original production order. I too wish it were getting better ratings though.

  • Leon

FOX needs to renew the show and work on the scheduling! FOX messes up their own shows with the uneccesary weeks off and long hiatuses! AH is growing and is shocking everyone considering it was at a 1.5 weeks ago! Renew the show and let it grow! It’s a great pairing with sleepy hollow!

  • THE OLD MAN

I’m opting for the cancellation scenerio

  • Ike

@Shepherd, no need for that. Every ep. is stand-alone. Even characterization and relationships don’t change much ep.-to-ep. Still a very interesting show anyway, recommended, but no need to watch in order, and I’m usually a stickler for that.

  • Byrd

I watched ep 1 and really enjoyed it. I saw the ratings decline for the next episode and then I dreamed of Firefly and Space Above & beyond and could NOT make myself watch more until it was renewed. I want it to get renewed but given Fox’s track record for these kind of shows, I’m not holding my breath. I am not a Nielsen viewer. If I was, this would be a different story entirely so I’ll hold them on the DVR until Fox renews the show then I’ll watch the whole season.

  • fyere

@Ike – I would disagree. There may not be much of a plot arc, but Kennex’s personality in particular has been noticeably bouncing back and forth between different stages of development. Like the last episode, where his anger issues and disdain for androids were on full this-comes-right-after-the-pilot display – after he’d apparently moved on from all that and the thread had already been dropped.

I’m hoping this all means that it’s already been decided the season will be capped at 13, like Sleepy Hollow, and they’re just waiting for the next block of episodes to air before they make any firm decisions or say anything about it. The show has been subject to so much scheduling weirdness, it’s been hard to get a handle on how well it’s actually doing.

  • Saga

There is certainly enjoyable chemistry between Kennex and Dorian, but none between Kennex and Stahl. Is she really supposed to be a cop? Strange smirks and shirts…
Anyway,I would love to see AH develop further,it has great potential.

  • Erica

Yeah, Almost Human is in a weird limbo. The definition of a bubble show. I’m leaning toward cancelation, though.

I was the show itself could try harder…

  • Dan

Almost Human will be cancelled. Its ratings arent bad but if you look at FOXs schedule for next season, they may not really need it.

Look at it this way, FOX will have The Following and Sleepy Hollow likely sharing a slot throughout the season. And probably have a new drama airing Mondays. A lot of their ordered dramas look to be limited dramas either airing in the spring or fall. Glee and Bones may be the only dramas getting full 22 episode final seasons. If X Factor is trimmed to a 2 hour Wednesday and FOX keeps the comedy block Tuesdays, then where would they put Almost Human? Fridays? That hasnt worked in the past.

Here’s a possible schedule that FOX could do. (This is not my fantasy schedule but based on what shows FOX has and their limited time slots, the shedule, could look like this)

    Mondays
8:00 New Drama (Fall) / New Drama (Spring)
9:00 Sleepy Hollow (Fall) / The Following (Spring)

    Tuesdays
    8:00 Brooklyn Nine-Nine
8:30 The Mindy Project (If renewed) / New Comedy (If not)
    9:00 New Girl
    9:30 NEW COMEDY

    Wednesdays
8:00 X Factor (Trimmed 2 hour edition if renewed)

    Thursdays
8:00 Glee (Full final season) / Rake (If Renewed)
    9:00 New Drama

    Fridays
    8:00 Bones (Full final season)
    9:00 Masterchef Junior

Honestly, there wouldnt be any room for Almost Human so it would just be easier for the show to be cancelled. FOX has a lot of limited dramas in development that would air either fall or winter/spring along with full seasons of Bones Glee and the Tuesday and Sunday comedies.

  • Shepherd

    @Ike

In general, I prefer to marathon shows anyway. Besides, I’ve never watched a show out of order; even strong procedural ones like L&O, so I see no reason to start now.

  • Barb

Some shows need time to grow and with them mixing up the production order, doesn’t help. What they should do is leave it at a reduced season count as with Sleepy Hollow. With the number of duds the networks have, it would have a chance as a replacement show. Personally, I like the show.

  • tvwatcher

    I am really enjoying AH.

But this is FOX, famous even today for canceling Firefly. If they cancel AH, I will be rooting against their new shows very actively! :)

  • KJ Styles

If Fox cancels X-Factor, then Almost Human should be safe.

  • Dan

@KJ Styles – Not necessarily, FOX could opt for Hell’s Kitchen or Kitchen Nightmares or Masterchef on Wednesdays instead of new dramas.

I would say with next season as Fox’s transitioning season (The end of veterans Bones and Glee and the beginning of split shows) they would opt to continue with X Factor for one more season rather than cancel it. The show is still profitable, they just may not have Simon Cowell as a judge and trim it to 2 hours rather than 3. X Factor does OK on Wednesdays, its just Thursday where the show fails at 8pm. Its like DWTS fall 2012, it did ok Mondays but tanked on Tuesdays

One option if Almost Human is renewed would be to move it to fridays but as seen with Touch and Human Target, the show would just fail on fridays. So FOX may go the Chicago Code way and just cancel it after 1 season.

I would say with all of their drama orders for next season plus Sleepy Hollow and The Following and possibly Rake succeeding, there’s just no reason for FOX to renew Almost Human. ABC and NBC would love AH’s numbers but they have more timeslots.

Seen four episodes of almost human
I find most good shows get lost in the trash of what is called tv.
Most are re’uped this jewel I found on a site talking about fox canceled or renewed programs.
First time I have heard of it!
Enlisted I found on a free tv site.
Just trying to figure out the new releases for the season
And had the privilege of watching the second episode when it aired
I have no doubt they will be cancelled because anything I take extra interest in usually is!

  • saldb

AH is my favorite tv show. It’s a cult show from day one. Really well written scenarios and clever scenarios. The characters are simple, but they are meant to be.
