The 2014 ratings for Almost Human indicate it's likely to be renewed, but Fox's scheduling of the show, and their silence, point the other direction. The two together are keeping the Cancellation Bear's prediction at "toss up" for now.

Fox scheduled an episode of the show as the only original scripted episode aired on the network for the week ending December 22. It's being bumped for the next two weeks for the 2 hour finale of Sleepy Hollow (after originally being scheduled to precede the penultimate episode) and the premiere of The Following.  Perhaps both are explainable for scheduling logistics purposes, but that's typically not how networks schedule shows they plan on renewing.

When the show returns on February 3 it will have only a few episodes remaining of its original order and Fox has yet to announce either a back order, or what will happen to its timeslot after its 13 episodes finish. That should be worrying to fans.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

This is sad… I really like this show. Ealy is bloody brilliant. I hope that they’ll give it a hail mary pass… doubt it, but I shall hold onto my smidgen of hope until the upfronts. (hey it worked for TGW last year…lol)

Almost Human is a very solid show. I feel like it’s just getting up to speed with the main story arc getting more attention. Hopefully this late season run isn’t too late to save the show. If the season finally gets to the meat, ends on a cliffhanger, and the show isn’t renewed I’ll be annoyed with Fox and the people that come out and cry foul when they didn’t watch the show during its run.

  • Marcello

The other option is they can sell AH to another network.

  • Dan

@CBS Viewer – The smart thing would be to not move Almost Human to fridays, but given the limited slots and options, if renewed that may be their only choice.

FOX isn’t very smart when scheduling shows, they benched Touch so it can timsehare with Fringe and that of curse flopped. However knowing FOX they could very well do that. However the smart thing to do, given that Sleepy Hollow is already renewed as well as Glee and Bones for final seasons and The Following and Rake have good chances for midseason, would be to just cancel Almost Human. Its not a Mob Doctor or Lone Star failure its more of a Chicago Code or The Finder failure.

  • Rebecca

I love Almost Human, the chemistry between Dorian and John gets better with every episode! The vision of the future is really cool too, with all the integrated tech. I really, really hope it gets a chance!!

  • OBloodyHell

It is unfortunate if AH gets cancelled, it’s a fairly decent show, for mainstream SF. It’s vastly better than the execrable “Revolution”, for example, though I think, for the money, the Canadian series Continuum is a better show even though, being a b-list show, has lower production values.

I think if AH gets cancelled, despite “acceptable” numbers, it’s because it’s probably more expensive as a show than what they might replace it with that also get “acceptable” numbers. As a futuristic show, it’s clearly more expensive in terms of the FX budget and demands than many other shows.

The problem is there are no gay characters on the show. Introduce Doriana, a gay cross dressing droid who performs dance numbers choreographed by Zach Woodlee and lip syncs to prerecorded autotuned vocals. Sort of like “Cop Rock” (yeah, I’m that old). Possible companion show, “The Almost Human Project”, in which network executive wannabes compete for a spot to run Fox further into the ground.

  • Dan S

With Fox’s move to year round programming AH could also continue as a summer series like Unforgettable did for CBS. I’m more excited for tonight’s premiere of Rake. I love Greg Kinnear & see elements of House in his character. The advance reviews are good & should do considerably better than Glee did.

  • HeadlessHorseman

I’m getting more and more afraid that Almost Human is the next Terra Nova. Good Sci Fi show with decent numbers that’s cancelled due to a filled schedule and above average budget.

  • AgentKaiiZ

Almost Human is a great show, but I’ve noticed a pattern with FOX shows. Normally, they cancel shows that most people see as great but the people at FOX would rather have ‘American Idol’ and ‘X Factor’ instead. ‘Terra Nova’ was a great show, but they canceled it. Back when the first season of ‘Castle’ was released, I had to quit watching because I didn’t want to get hooked and it to get canceled. That may be a reason why ‘Almost Human’ isn’t getting the best of ratings. People love it, but they had to quit watching so they wouldn’t get hooked. Either way, I will always love ‘Almost Human’ and FOX shouldn’t cancel it.

  • Dan

@Dan S – They tried a similiar year round programming 10 years ago 2004-2005, that didn’t work well so they went back to form for the next year, my guess is that

Whether Almost Human ends up as a Terra Nova or The Chicago Code and gets axed after a season or Human Target & Touch and gets a second season for fridays, it seems inevitable that it doesnt have a long future.

My guess is that FOX says screw it and cancel it. FOX is on their high horse (no pun intended) this season with Sleepy Hollow as a hit, and if Rake does well along with The Following, there may be no reason to renew Almost Human.

The one good thing is that it is not a Mob Doctor or Dollhouse flop. It was a god effort but nevertheless AH will be cancelled in May.

  • Kevin

Obviously Almost Human is a 2013 version of RoboCop excecpt he looks human and he isnt the actual main charactor!!! Now, It Needs to be moved to a diffrent slot, maybe Following at 8/7c and Almost Human 9/8c!!! Or even Friday at 9/8c!!!Its too bad te Almost human and Intellagence arnt on the same network for back to back time slots!!!

  • Alex

The curse of Holmes & Yo-Yo continues (cop shows with robot partners don’t survive – see also Mann & Machine). Though it’s interesting to see that this is a case where ratings don’t indicate a show’s survival, as the bear seems a bit puzzled on this one.

  • Cam

I hope Almost Human gets renewed. It’s one of the few TV shows I watch.

  • HeadlessHorseman

Since Rake bombed out of the gate, Almost Human should be bumped up to likely renewal in a few weeks, once the Bear mentions The Following and Rake in the headline.

  • yara

Almost Human is such a great show, people should really give it a shot. Great sci-fi and future technology, crime solving, humor and a great rapport between the two leads. I love it.

  • CBSviewer

    @ Dan

The smart thing would be to not move Almost Human to fridays

I agree. But, I think Almost Human is not strong enough for Friday. If Bones receives a shortened (unlikely but possible due to the production costs) final season, Almost Human will have to stand on its own.
Touch averaged a 2.1 for its first season and when it moved to Friday it only got a 0.7.
