This pullback is no surprise after a run of crappy weather gave all the shows a bump up in ratings the past couple of weeks.

  • MBmomof3

Maybe the next polar vortex headed our way this coming week will help. Anyway, I’m enjoying the soaps very much right now.

  • DenverDean

Three of the four shows still show nice increases from last year. Considering the previous week’s weather anomaly, still trending in the right direction.

  • moshane58

Now with soapnet closed really GH should be rising plus days. Really tired of Nielsen…Read to many forums where people said they would have to watch it on ABC now. Same for Days..

  • Bexx

Seems when many people are home the ideal station to view is CBS.

Next week’s promo looks great, looking forward to it.

This cannot be blamed on Nielsen. All Nielsen does is add up the numbers. It doesn’t make people watch or tune out.

The last few weeks many of us tried to tell folks that they were odd weeks and folks shouldn’t try to read too much into them.

I mean you had 2 weeks where only 3 days of ratings counted. Then you had another week where the weather was so cold many people couldn’t even leave their homes.

You had more people at home and thus you had a bigger group of people to draw viewers from. Many of those people were people who didn’t normally watch, but many of them were people who had the chance to watch live but normally watched it online or DVR’d the show. When those people watched live — guess what that was less numbers for the DVR viewing that week or the online viewing.

It all works out in the end.

It was a great 3 weeks of ratings and showed that people still will watch the show. There is still an audience there when these people are home.

The drop was expected. And I am sure it was even expected by the networks and advertisers. After all they have been following the ratings for years too. They have learned to follow trends and not follow weekly or daily big jumps and falls. There are so many outside factors that can affect ratings on a weekly or daily basis. If it grows into a trend then they get worried.

Right now the trend for the 4 soaps is them being up overall. That is what they are looking at. If that trend changes then they will do something.

  • Mike

Right now all the soaps are up in Total Viewers and 18-49 for the season:

    Y&R is up 9% and 7%
B&B is up 14% but even in the 18-49
    GH is 8% and 17%
Days is up 10% and 10%

IF the trend starts going the other way or if sweeps is bad then the networks will get worried.

I know this is off topic from the ratings, but I just have to say one more time today that I am totally disgusted with the man Nelson Branco who calls himself a soap opera journalist.

I understand the man having his favorites. I do have a big problem when he is supposed to be a neutral soap opera journalist but can’t keep his perspective.

That caused him first to lose his job at TV Guide Canada because he got on Twitter and called Kristian Alfonso all kinds of disgusting names because he was upset that his friend Crystal Chappel lost her job. She joined in with him and ended up hurting her career.

And now today he takes to Twitter again today upset over the Michael Muhney stuff and publicly attacks Kristoff St. John’s children. If you have a problem with the actor fine but his children didn’t have anything to do with this.

Nelson Branco you should seriously consider dropping the name journalist as an occupation. I don’t know what you are but you quit being a journalist a long time ago.

  • Bexx

NB = one of those Muhney loons. 1 week till they vanish, supposedly.

  • Tim

I Believe that DAYS will stay around 2.7 million viewers for the next few weeks, now that Nick is alive still, its gonna be wild in Salem for the next two weeks…..A DAYS viewer of 40 years…..Tim…

  • Red Rivers

Lots of fans and eyes will vanish on the 30th. Insults are just a catalyst for further defection. Watch Y&R sink. It deserves to.

  • Truth Detective

Actually, Kristoff St John started the nastiness by insulting Branco last night. Branco then went nuclear on KSJ. I don’t feel sorry for him one bit. KSJ has played it fast and loose over this mess and that’s what happens when you start to burn people publicly. Nobody will sit back and take that kind of trash. KSJ should have known better. People need to step away from the keyboard on Friday nights if they’ve been throwing a few too many back.

  • Denise

After being a viewer to CBS and Y&R for over30 + yrs .I can not understand for the life of me Why CBS and SONY ,& Y&R would Hire the soap of Death Exec producer. No matter she says She will sink Y&R till it gets cancelled .I DO NOT WANT this I have too many years invested in this show .The Problem is She has tuned in to GH but on CBS instead of Y&R. We as fans DONT want this.HOW many Actors Have left and WHY Michelle Stafford , Billy Miller Michael Muhney. These are the anchors to this Soap.^ months from now the station will be scratching there heads saying”what went wrong ” WE are telling you NOW what is wrong,But when they realize it we will ALREADY BBE GONE!!!!

  • Mike

    @Truth Detective

As I said if you have a problem with the person then go after them. The stuff was between Branco and St. John — Branco should have never attacked St. John’s children.

    That was low class.

Branco has no one else to blame but himself that he lost his job at TV Guide Canada and now is having to fold his e-pamphlet for lack of supporters. Truth be told he blames it on lack of supporters but the man has burned so many in the soap opera industry he has probably burned all of his connections and no one will speak to him anymore.

  • Jennifer

Even though a drop was expected, it’s still good to see the year to year increases. I am enthralled with Y&R lately. It has done a big turnaround.

@Mike – totally agree about Branco. He is done. His latest meltdown is downright mean toward KSJ. He’s folding his e-pamphlet because no one buys it. He has alienated just about everyone in daytime. The only allies he has left are the gossipy behind the scenes people who feed Branco unsubstantiated gossip. Anyone who has followed Branco’s history has seen the same cycle time and again. He eventually turns on everyone and spews hate. The only reason he hates JFP is because he kept begging her for an interview for his e-pamphlet and she kept turning him down. She wanted nothing to do with him. He claims that Doug Davidson punched him last year but of course he didn’t file any charges so I don’t believe Branco. IF that is true, I totally believe that it was provoked. He just is not a nice person at all. Obviously unhappy in his own life so he wants everyone else to be unhappy. I’m glad he’s done in the daytime world.

Not surprised the soaps fell. I think the fall was expected. The ratings rose because of the holiday season and the polar vortex. There was a lot of bad weather on the east coast this week, so lets see if the ratings go up next week.

  • Patricia

The Bold and The Beautiful got me back for awhile with the addition of Rena Sofer but gave her a real crappy storyline. They lost me again. That was the only one that I watched. I so wanted Wyatt and Hope together and ya’ll blew that one! Goodbye!

  • JayTN

I have noticed a common theme from the pro-Muhney camp, at least when it comes to forum messages (such as TVBTN and SON). It seems that every Muhney supporter has watched Y&R for 40 years and almost always like the departures of Michelle Stafford and Billy Miller as mitigating factors of the dislike for the “new” JFP-ified Y&R.

I don’t pretend to know the particulars of Stafford or Miller’s exit, but it seemed like Miller was always threatening to walk away every time his contract came up for renewal/extension. I don’t think Miller liked being part of the “lowly” soap genre and wanted to move on (just my own personal observation/opinion). Stafford hasn’t spoken publicly – to my knowledge – about her exit, and if she has an ill will toward Y&R, she is wisely keeping it to herself…proving that is both practical and classy.

The reason I brought up the 40 year viewer statements above is because I really don’t believe these people have watched a show for 3 or 4 decades and will walk away so cavalierly because of one (or even three) actors leaving. Even if these people are being truthful, unless they started watching Y&R in pre-school, they will likely fall outside the desired 18-49 (or even 25-54) age group and therefore not really attractive to either CBS, Sony, or the advertisers. Either way, the proof will hit the fan this upcoming week, although we will have to wait until the week after to see the numbers for Y&R with Muhney and the Muhney free version. A small, negligible decline or no decline will certainly put the true size of the “Muhney army” into context. Personally, I can’t wait to see those results…if the numbers are good (i.e. a small drop or no drop), CBS should do a press release if for nothing else then to rub salt into Muhney’s self-inflicted wound.

  • Mike

I’ve watched the show since day 1 and I have seen many great performers from Shemar Moore to Terry Lester to Jaime Lyn Bauer to Victoria Rowell leave the show. Actors who gave the show far more time than Muhney did, and were far more popular. If I was to ever leave it would have been for someone who really mattered.

Billy Miller wanted more time off all the time. I liked him but it was clear a long time ago he was just waiting for that big break and he was gone anyway. Sony just no longer would give him what he wanted to keep him to stay.

  • moshane58

I wish people would stay out of the behind scene going on with Y&R and just support the show. We have no clue what is going on. If you’re a soap fan you’ll hang in there. This should have not been leaked out in the first place. Many people have left shows and we had no clue why until years later. Now its a mad dash to sell papers and get advertising up on blog on a website. I don’t watch Y&R but I hate seeing blogs all over people taking sides and going to stop watching. There are many actors on each show working their butts off to entertain us and we need to remember that. Don’t let one person destroy a show. Just back your soaps and let the people on the show fight it out. He said and she said never gets anywhere with the truth. I agree no one should ever talk about anyone childrens. That is down right wrong. Insult or not leave children out it..
