48 HOURS: “A Bad Bet” was Saturday night’s #1 program in viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Jan. 25, 2014.
At 10:00 PM, 48 HOURS: “A Bad Bet” was first in adults 25-54 (1.3/04) – the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news – as well as viewers (5.32m) and adults 18-49 (0.9/03, tied with NBC).
Saturday’s broadcast featured Richard Schlesinger and 48 HOURS’ investigation into the deaths of Tammy Parker and Bryan Capnerhurst and a look inside the world of illegal sports betting in South Carolina.
Tammy Parker was found dead by her husband, Brett Parker, in their Columbia, S.C., home. Brett Parker told police his wife was shot by his bookie associate, Bryan Capnerhurst, when he was attempting to rob Parker’s safe. Parker maintained he had no choice but to shoot Capnerhurst in self-defense.
Parker’s defense attorney said Capnerhurst was killed during a robbery gone bad. However, the local medical examiner noticed a wound during an autopsy on Capnerhurst that suggested otherwise. A jury agreed with the medical examiner and Brett Parker was convicted of the murders of his wife and Capnerhurst. He was given two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
