This has been another forgettable season for new ABC shows. Agents of SHIELD is the only new drama that will survive into next season, and there was the distinct possibility that none of the new Fall sitcoms would survive either.

After its post-premiere ratings swoon, the cancellation bear moved The Goldbergs from likely renewal to a "toss up".  Given its relative ratings improvement in 2014, the bear moved his prediction for it back up to likely renewal last week, and this week it's in the headline.

Suburgatory ratings rose in its second week back. The bear's going to give it at least another week before moving it off of a "toss up" though.

The bear cautions against reading too much into the current Index values for ABC shows. With their top 3 dramas yet to air a new episode in 2014, the overall network rating average is artificially depressed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Yeah it’s still too early to tell anything of value. And I imagine with the Olympics forcing shows into hiatus for most of February it’ll make it harder for us to gauge what the network is going to do with regards to renewals.

  • gerry

not much hope for trophy wife, unfortunately. why that and goldbergs didn’t air on wednesday is still beyond me.

that just leaves me to worry about nashville. i’ve really enjoyed it this season. luckily abc is such a mess that i don’t see them canceling much beyond their freshman shows.

  • Tommy Mickens

Great job with these predictions – they’re exactly the ones I would make.

  • RyanCanada

well its already season 3 for suburgatory, it makes sence, ABC will want syndication no????

  • The Nightman Cometh

awesome for the GOLDBERGS, its such a great show

  • Ken

Looking at this list, it sure looks like cancelling Back in the Game was a mistake on ABC’s part, creative differences be damned. (That said, BITG always made more sense as a summer show to me.)

  • Dan S

I’m fairly confident that Goldbergs will move to Wed next season. It’s earned a right to be paired with The Middle & Modern Family. As long as Suburgatory doesn’t go below 1.5 it should likely return. Maybe on a new night like Fri.

  • Jeff (Canada)

Not this time. Suburgatory only has 57 episodes after this season (since this season is only 13 episodes), so one more season won’t get them to the preferred 88 episodes.

    Totally agree with entire post

  • Jagger Dagger

    Happy for The Goldbergs.

  • SerferTJ

    Yup, same ol same ol…

Just curious, does anyone think that Ressurection, Mind Games, or The Black Box will gain any traction?
I’m only guessing the Black Box will have a shot, seeing as it’s a medical drama given the Grey’s Anatomy lead-in. The others look kind of boring and DoA.

  • Jared

Considering how poorly rated the new comedies have been for ABC they really should renew Suburgatory and use it as a filler for next season.

  • Nate

I don’t understand why ABC didn’t move Trophy Wife or The Goldbergs to the post-Modern Family time slot months ago. Either of those matches up better with Modern Family and it was clear very early in the season that Super Fun Night was a flop. Now they’re putting Mixology in the post-Modern Family spot where it will promptly flop because the shows are completely different.

  • Andrew21

    @RyanCanada @Jeff (Canada)
Suburgatory it’s not produced by ABC (Warner), so even if next season did actually get suburgatory to 88eps, abc doesn’t care

  • PurpleDrazi

I just realized I only watch one show on this network and I’m seriously considering dropping that one as well. Yikes! Back to the drawing board ABC.

  • Mike G

Suburgatory might be the worst comedy on tv, except maybe Trophy Wife.

  • Bob

I love The Middle and glad to see it doing well. I love Scandal and Revenge and glad both will be back. I have grown tired of Modern Family but still want it to do well. The Goldbergs on Wednesday would be fantastic. Nashville seems like a nice show that hopefully will get a third season. Everything else….good luck but I don’t watch.

  • grey

Re the bear pic; the cubs are not so cute and cuddly with blood on their faces. LOL.

  • Rebooted

Prediction (assuming ABC does not get the football package)

    Once Upon A Time
    Greys Anatomy
    NEW DRAMA-Warriors

    NEW DRAMA-The Visitors

    The Middle
    The Goldbergs
    Modern Family
    NEW COMEDY-Fresh Off The Boat
    NEW DRAMA-Sea of Fire

NEW DRAMA-How To Get Away With Murder

    Last Man Standing
    NEW COMEDY-Black-ish
    Shark Tank

  • Dan

The Goldbergs and Agents of Shield are certain renewals and if they are the only 2 shows renewed from this season then Suburgatory and Nashville are essentially safe. Suburgatory because ABC could always use it as a reliable player when a new comedy fails (and that happens a lot on ABC) and Nashville because cancelling it may bring another Body of Proof situation (Nashville may only average a 1.5 but a new show in that slot may barely get a 1.0)

Super Fun Night is definitely dead, and Trophy Wife and The Neighbors look like goners. Also Mixology’s premise wears thin (remember Big Day and Worst Week) ABC may as well start fresh next season with what they have including

Reality/Competition/News: DWTS, The Bachelor, AFHV, Shark Tank, 20/20

Drama: Grey’s Anatomy, Castle, Revenge, OUAT, Scandal, Nashville, AOS

Comedy: Modern Family, The Middle, Last Man Standing, Suburgatory and The Goldbergs

    Everything else just dump.
