This has been another forgettable season for new ABC shows. Agents of SHIELD is the only new drama that will survive into next season, and there was the distinct possibility that none of the new Fall sitcoms would survive either.

After its post-premiere ratings swoon, the cancellation bear moved The Goldbergs from likely renewal to a "toss up".  Given its relative ratings improvement in 2014, the bear moved his prediction for it back up to likely renewal last week, and this week it's in the headline.

Suburgatory ratings rose in its second week back. The bear's going to give it at least another week before moving it off of a "toss up" though.

The bear cautions against reading too much into the current Index values for ABC shows. With their top 3 dramas yet to air a new episode in 2014, the overall network rating average is artificially depressed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Possible Fall 2014 Schedule…

    Agents of Shield
    New Drama

    New Comedy
    The Middle
    Modern Family
    New Comedy
    New Drama

    Grey’s Anatomy
    New Drama

    Last Man Standing
    Shark Tank

    Once Upon a Time
    New Drama

I dont like it at all, greys wont move to Sundays and they will never leave a new show as an scandal lead-in maybe the opposite, besides that revenge at 8 pm? really? dont see that happening..

  • Jermal

Usually networks don’t mess with their strong nights and for ABC its Mondays,Thursdays, and Fridays. Revenge hasn’t aired on its new Sunday 10 PM timeslot yet so I think ABC will wait to see how it performs. The one-two combo of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal is working well for ABC so unless they have the football package they won’t mess with their Thursday lineup. The only thing in your schedule can realistically happen is The Goldbergs moving to Wednesdays.

  • iSayso

    OMG! Poor Rebel. :(

  • Walker

I expect Mind Games to promptly flop, and Resurrection will probably fail as well because none of the promos have actually said anything about the show.

  • Mike

is their any chance that ABC will try and test airing once upon a time in wonderland behind Once upon a time

  • HV

Here’s what I say on most likely canceled -> renewed. The line shows the split.

    Super Fun Night
    The Neighbors
    Trophy Wife
    The Goldbergs

    Last Man Standing
    The Middle
    Grey’s Anatomy
    Once Upon a Time
    Modern Family

I think that the only shows that could go the other way are Nashville, The Goldbergs, and Suburgatory. The others are all definitely going the way I’m predicting.

  • HV

Oh! I forgot OUAT in Wonderland. I’d put it between The Neighbors and Trophy Wife.

  • StevieH

For me I’m thinking this is what ABC will do.

    New Drama

    New Comedy
    The Goldbergs

    The Middle
    New Comedy
    Modern Family
    New Comedy

    Grey’s Anatomy
    New Drama

    Last Man Standing

    Once Upon a Time
    New Drama

This all thinking if the season ended now.

  • Isobel

Happy for the goldbergs, I hope Nashville and Suburgatory are renewed as well

  • TV Fan

she does not have any talent. but she has made some $$ by talking BS. she is a nobody in Australia.
Please, give those real talents some fair chance!!!

  • Jermal

as of now no as ABC is putting Resurrection after OUAT.

  • Charmed

I just can’t see Nashville being cancelled. It’s doing good in everything except ratings basically

  • Fred

True, but ratings are what counts.
The show is addressing some of the issues I had with it early this season.
Music is on the increase and ALL of the plots are strong.
    Can’t wait for tonight’s ep!
    Hope for a bump tonight.

  • Charmed

@Fred yep, definitely an improvement from the first half of the season. I like the current storyline with Scarlett :)

  • Rebecca

Happy for The Golbergs. Sad about Trophy Wife and The Neighbors but I’ll keep rooting for them until ABC officially decides/announces. Enjoying what’s left of SFN, and I’ll watch the rest of OUATiW when it returns. The rest of my ABC shows are safe.

  • Renee Parnell

I’m not much for predicting the demise of a tv show, but I hope beyond hope that Suburgatory gets renewed. That’s the only sitcom I like on TV right now.

  • Ultima

Here’s my take on ABC heading into the spring…

I see them with 16 hours of programming that will certainly (or at least very likely) be on their schedule next season:

Dramas (6 hrs) – Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Castle and Agents of SHIELD

Sitcoms (2 hrs) – Modern Family, The Middle, The Goldbergs, Last Man Standing

Unscripted Staples (5 hrs) – The Bachelor/DWTS, Shark Tank, 20/20, AFHV

    Saturday night (3 hrs) – football & movies/repeats

That leaves six hours of fill on the fall schedule and three non-freshman shows with their fates to be determined.

This season, ABC had six hours of new shows in the fall (4 dramas, 4 sitcoms), so they don’t necessarily need to renew anything else for next season.

That said, I think there’s a decent chance that they’ll renew one more drama (possibly for midseason if it’s one of the new ones), so Nashville is a solid bubble show at the moment.

As far as comedies go, they have plenty of schedule flexibility available to them. Therefore, Suburagory’s fate will probably come down to whether or not ABC can get an acceptable licensing fee from Warner Bros. and Mixology probably won’t have any impact on the other shows regardless of its performance. The Neighbors will be canceled, of course.

Schedule-wise, I don’t expect any significant changes unless they decide to move Scandal or switch up the Bachelor/DWTS rotation (The Bachelor held up very well against The Voice in 2012, while DWTS is struggling). Revenge will likely remain in the Sunday 10pm timeslot and, if renewed, Nashville will probably be moved (e.g. Tuesday 10pm).

    Criticize away, criticize-away-ers!

  • CBSviewer

    @ Ultima

I agree with you. I can see ABC doing something like that next season.

8:00 – Dancing with the Stars
    10:00 – Castle

DWTS is not strong enough to launch a new Show at 10. Castle as a loyal fanbase and will always be strong there.

    8:00 – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
    9:00 – NEW DRAMA
    10:00 – Nashville

SHIELD is not the hit eveyone expected but it can be used to launch a new drama. Nashville moves to Tuesday 10PM because it’s wasting its Wednesday slot. I think Nashville could still be around 1.3-1.5 on Tuesday.

    8:00 – The Middle
    8:30 – The Goldbergs
    9:00 – Modern Family
    9:30 – NEW COMEDY
    10:00 – NEW DRAMA

Move The Goldbergs to Wednesday 8:30 and strenghten the slot. Use Modern Family to launch a two new shows.

    8:00 – NEW DRAMA
    9:00 – Grey’s Anatomy
    10:00 – Scandal

Since ABC wants to keep Grey’s Anatomy for, at least, two more seasons, I think they don’t want it to go head-to-head with TBBT. They can air a mini series at 8 and keep Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal where they are.

    8:00 – Last Man Standing
    8:30 – Suburgatory
    9:00 – Shark Tank
    10:00 – 20/20

Suburgatory proved it can stand on its own and it could be good on Friday. Nothing else to change.

    8:00 – Once Upon a Time
    9:00 – NEW DRAMA
    10:00 – Revenge

Once Upon a Time is not the beast it used to be but it’s still a good lead-in (Nashville could move there too). Revenge stays at 10.

  • capslocke

    8- DWTS
    10- Castle

    Why fix what’s not broken?

    8- SHIELD
    9- NEW DRAMA
    10- Revenge

Let’s try to salvage Revenge while filling a death slot, shall we? Plus, if it fails this will be syndication season anyway, so…

    8- The Middle
    8:30- NEW COMEDY
    9- Modern Family
    9:30- The Goldbergs
    10-NEW DRAMA

Use Modern Family to strengthen The Goldbergs, can be the next Middle. ABC desperately needs a reliable comedy. Put the best new comedy of the season after the Middle, but keep Suburgatory on the sidelines waiting just in case.

    9- Grey’s Anatomy
    10- Scandal

I’m really at a loss with this one. Let’s try a new reality, try to make the next Shark Tank. What else is there to do

    8- Last Man Standing
    9- Shark Tank
    10- 20/20

Didn’t think it was necessary to signify MULTI-CAM, but i guess it is…

    8- Once Upon a Time
    9- NEW DRAMA
    10- Nashville

Let’s try to salvage Nashville while filling a death slot, shall we?
