This has been another forgettable season for new ABC shows. Agents of SHIELD is the only new drama that will survive into next season, and there was the distinct possibility that none of the new Fall sitcoms would survive either.

After its post-premiere ratings swoon, the cancellation bear moved The Goldbergs from likely renewal to a "toss up".  Given its relative ratings improvement in 2014, the bear moved his prediction for it back up to likely renewal last week, and this week it's in the headline.

Suburgatory ratings rose in its second week back. The bear's going to give it at least another week before moving it off of a "toss up" though.

The bear cautions against reading too much into the current Index values for ABC shows. With their top 3 dramas yet to air a new episode in 2014, the overall network rating average is artificially depressed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Suburgatory is like abc’s 3rd best comedy in term of ratings why would it be likely cancelled! I think for an underrated comedy in its third season its doing good.

  • renny

@ tvfan rebel is actually something in Australia I’d know, I live here… so you’re wrong. But SFN is boring.

  • TV Fan

something of BS. she has no talent. no taste.
anyone is something accordingly. include youself.

  • Fred

DWTS-2 Hours- If possible. Would compete better against NFL and CABLE.
NASHVILLE- Perfect show for this slot.

    MAOS- Retooled

    Last Man Standing-Near perfect show
    Modern Family
Goldbergs- Should improved upon past failures

Shark Tank- This should solve the problem

Shark Tank- Possible will need new panelists if current can’t commit to another hour. Might help the ratings for the sitcoms.
    Last Man Standing
    Suburgatory- If canceled, new sitcom

Now that would be my fantasy.

Next is what ABC might likely do:

    DWTS-2 hours

    MAOS- Retooled
    New Action Show
    New Drama

    New Drama

Btw I stink at math. Hate the new entry. Rather the not a spammer click.

  • Fred

Apparently I stink at grammar as well. My spell check on my iPhone is not accurate at all.
I really wish this site would add the edit click again.

  • Steve

ABC needs to keep Suburgatory! Give it a 22 episode season, then a final 13 episode send off as a mid-series replacement in 2 years! Then, guess what? SYNDICATION

I am really liking Super Fun Night.

  • DaneM

I’m so happy for The Goldbergs recent performance. It is a great show that deserves a place amongst ABC’s really popular family sitcoms. If it goes on to be renewed, i hope they give it a slot next year that will suit it better.

  • kingstar

This may sound mean, but I don’t care what haens as long as OUAT gets renewed for a full fourth season and has at least 88 episodes.

  • Ray

This is what ABC needs to do next season to fill their death slots.

    ABC Fall 2014:

8:00 — Dancing with the Stars
    10:00 – Nashville / New Drama

    8:00 — Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
9:00 — New Drama (such as Agent Carter)
    10:00 – Castle

    8:00 — The Middle
    8:30 — The Goldbergs
    9:00 — Modern Family
    9:30 — New Comedy
    10:00 – New Drama

    8:00 — Grey’s Anatomy
9:00 — New Drama (such as How To Get Away with Murder)
    10:00 – Scandal

    8:00 — Last Man Standing
    8:30 — Suburgatory
    9:00 — Shark Tank
    10:00 – 20/20

    7:00 — America’s Funniest Home Videos
    8:00 — Once Upon a Time
    9:00 — New Drama / Resurrection (midseason)
    10:00 – Revenge

  • renny

@tv fan. I’m not wanting to start fights, I agree she has no talent, SFN proves how bad she is. I was just stating she is “kind off famous” in AU.

  • Fred

Why so much hate for Rebel Wilson and her show SFN?
I’ve watched many eps and find it light and cute.
No it’s not hilarious or brilliant , but I find myself chuckling here and there. The work place antics are funniest to me. Also her nights out on the town are usually fun. When she’s home with the roommates not so much . A little retooling can help this show.
Also lots of discussion about her faux accent. I never heard her slip her native accent as opposed to other actors when it occurs all the time.

My ABC fantasy schedule for 2014 Fall needs some adjusting . I added Last Man Standing twice .

DWTS-2 hours if at all possible.
Would compete better against NFL and cable.
NASHVILLE- would likely improve upon Betrayal and previous failures.

So this lineup should increase viewership .

OUAT- should do okay here. Good counter programing against The Voice and CBS sitcoms.
    NEW SHOW- a fantasy show.
CASTLE-was tempted to air an hour earlier. But it’s doing so well here.

    MAOS- retooled
    NEW SHOW-preferably action oriented
    NEW SHOW- a procedural .

LAST MAN STANDING- I rather see this than another new failure.
    GOLDBERGS- should be compatible here.
REVENGE- shouldn’t do any worse than NASHVILLE. Maybe even entice some old fans back. Far less competition here.

SHARK TANK- better than wasting expensive scripted shows.

SHARK TANK-start the night off strong . Might need so d new panelists if current can’t commit to another hour.
UNSCRIPTED – Nightline Primetime aka The Lookout. Prime TIme What Would You Do?

    Makes for a profitable night.

  • Fred

If ABC decides to renew Suburgatory they can save it for later next season .
CBS used to use Rules of Engagement like this for many years .

Shark Tank might need some new panelists if ABC decides to air another hour.
I have feeling one or more might not be able to commit the extra time .
ABC should capitalize on the success of this low cost and very profitable hit.
It could take years to cone up with another lucrative show like Shark Tank.

It’s a shame that even if ABC makes the right decisions next season they will probably still be in 4th place .
No amount of time slot changes can compete with the NFL and a monster like the VOiCE.
Unless ABC can find a show or two that can attract huge ratings .
    Not likely but possible.

Nashville is my favorite show, followed by Revenge so I do hope it doesn’t get cancelled. One of the reasons I hate to start watching these shows as so many get cancelled & they don’t have a good ending.
