Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from December 30, 2013 - January 26, 2014):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita* (F) final season complete 0.30
Beauty And The Beast  0.47
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled 0.54
Hart Of Dixie      0.70
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.78
Reign :| :| :| 0.93
Arrow      1.40
The Originals      1.55
Supernatural      1.63
Vampire Diaries      1.86

It's still early in 2014, but Reign fans should be encouraged that after one episode, the show's better rated than the first two 2014 episodes of The Tomorrow People.

Besides the shows predicted as certain renewals by the cancellation bear, the CW will renew at least one more show (and quite possibly two more). The cancellation bear will catch The Tomorrow People before it catches Reign.

Why doesn't the bear move his Reign prediction to "likely renewed" right now? He's waiting to see the results for Star Crossed and The 100. Those results might also cause a change in his prediction for The Tomorrow People.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

:) :) :) :) more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Star Crossed and The 100 are the two remaining factors. I’m thinking The 100 will rate better than The Tomorrow People, but can it beat Reign? Who knows.

  • Tom

Star-Crossed will in all likeliness be DOA.
The wildcard here is The 100 in the post-Arrow slot.

My prediction is that the CW will renew Reign + TTP or The 100.

  • Ron

Reign ratings will go up,Mark my words.First,It will not be BATB 2.0 because It’s ratings have not went under a .5 like it did in the first 9 episodes also it viewers have been higher.Second, has a better retention even though losing half of TVD demo this past thursday.TVD scored 1.6 and 1.4 last year and BATB scored .5 and .6.

  • Tommy Mickens

I think you’re being too careful with Reign (perhaps to counter the craziness of the Bubble Watch?). I’d have it already moved up to likely to be renewed as I can’t see almost any way it won’t be (though it’s not guaranteed, which is why I’d have it as likely instead of certain).

  • Tim

Sigh. I shall have to become a retentionista then. Last week TTP’s 0.5 was 62.5% of Arrow, while Reign’s 0.6 was 50% of TVD’s 1.2. Not great for either, in truth, but not exactly proof that Reign is soaring high. Shame – I really like TTP.

  • Jon

Looks like ftp has fallen even more behind reign then I previously thought. I know this sounds selfish but I now hope the 100 and star crossed do even better. I just hare the thought of a good show like ftp getting cancelled over Reign.

  • Chris

You can call me a retentionista as well, but I just don’t think a TENTH of a ratings point really makes that much of a difference – particularly when Reign is routinely adjusted down out of the strongest lead-in the CW has.

Plus, I read somewhere that some filming for the show is on location in Ireland…that doesn’t sound cheap.

  • gerry

i think reign will be this/next year’s batb. so it will get renewed and quite possibly collapse next season.

the 100 will determine ttp’s chances. i mean, star crossed might be ok but even just in the comments no one is expecting it to do well, so its chances seem small. sadly, i like ttp. i think with a second season (and a slight retool) it could do ok.

  • RyanCanada

i really like TTP and Reign, but i understand TTP wont get a renewal, you can renew a show when its barely getting an .05 and a .06, its smarter just to try something new in the fall.

  • tedtalks

Reign aired out of 1.2 TVD. TTP aired out of .9 of Arrow. Both shows are doing poorly. Reign doing a point higher is nothing.

  • Ron

Just before the break TTP scored a .5 out of 1.1 so let’s not talk about retention.I was comparing BATB and Reign.

  • Tom

    a) Retention doesn’t matter.
    b) A tenth of a point does matter.

What is more, Mark Pedowitz said as recently as the TCAs that he was feeling bullish about Reign – the only new show he singled out in that manner. Add to that the dedicated fanbase as emphasized by the People’s Choice Award, and I think it’s clear who’s in front in terms of the battle for renewal at present.

  • Brandy

@Chris only the pilot was filmed in Ireland., the rest is filmed in Toronto.Reign has only been adjusted down twice btw,not routinely .A tenth can make a lot of difference when/since most of cws rate so closely :VD,Arrow,To,SPN are usually within a tenth or two at most of each other and BatB,CD,HoD are so close at 0.3-0.4 and TTP/Reign at 0.6

  • Brandy

@Jon quality dosent matter for renewals.I hate the thought that The 100′,TTP could be renewed over Reign
@Tom,Pedowitz also said he was bullish about TO season two.

  • eelna

Why does everyone think, that Star-Crossed will flop?

It has a lot of promotion, a very well known cast. If HOD can be at a 0.4, S-C will stay around 0.5 and 0.6.

    S-C 1.7 Million Viewers and a 0.6
    The 100 2.4 Million Viewers and a 1.0/0.9

  • tedtalks

@Tom retention does matter, if Reign was doing those numbers without a leadin it would be renewed, but after the highest rated show on CW, its on the bubble. Reign is a network favorite so it’ll probably be renewed unless it collapses

  • Adir

    I thinkg that The CW will renew : Star-Crossed ( my fav ) , The 100 , Reign ( didnt like it!!) ..
Im home TTP will renew also .. this is a great show!!

  • eelna

How can Star-Crossed be your favourite, if you haven’t seen it yet. And TTP is definitly going to be cancelled. Last season, SPN had a 0.9/1.0 in the same spot, TTP has now 0.5. CANCELLED! I hope the storyline could at least be done, without a open ending. (Like TSC)
Reign has 0.6. Last year Beauty and the Beast had at this time of year 0.7/0.6.

  • eelna

Retention doesn’t matter much, especially since Reign skews much younger. A lot of viewers are under 18. So lets say, if Reign had the same numbers in viewers, but just the TVD audience, it would score at least a 0.7.
