Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2013-14 season in May, 2014. (includes results from December 30, 2013 - January 26, 2014):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Nikita* (F) final season complete 0.30
Beauty And The Beast  0.47
The Carrie Diaries (F) de facto canceled 0.54
Hart Of Dixie      0.70
The Tomorrow People :| :| :| 0.78
Reign :| :| :| 0.93
Arrow      1.40
The Originals      1.55
Supernatural      1.63
Vampire Diaries      1.86

It's still early in 2014, but Reign fans should be encouraged that after one episode, the show's better rated than the first two 2014 episodes of The Tomorrow People.

Besides the shows predicted as certain renewals by the cancellation bear, the CW will renew at least one more show (and quite possibly two more). The cancellation bear will catch The Tomorrow People before it catches Reign.

Why doesn't the bear move his Reign prediction to "likely renewed" right now? He's waiting to see the results for Star Crossed and The 100. Those results might also cause a change in his prediction for The Tomorrow People.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014
  more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2014

:) :) :) :) more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Possible Fall 2014 Schedule…

    The Flash
The Tomorrow People (if it does well on Mondays this season)

    The Originals

The 100 (if it does well this Spring)

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Supernatural Spinoff

    Hart of Dixie

Star-Crossed (if it does well this season)
    And maybe another new drama

  • Bill Gorman

    “@Bill Gorman

    Such a sad pic :/”

    Not for the bear. ;)

The ratings for Reign and the first season of BATB are not comparable. BATB’s ratings started out strong, declined by half and then jumped to consecutive 0.7 demos after returning from hiatus in January 2013. Thereafter, its ratings began to slide. This suggests that BATB attracted some new viewers after returning from hiatus, but ultimately couldn’t hold them or much of its previous audience.

In contrast, after opening with a 0.8 demo, Reign’s recent ratings have remained in the 0.60 – 0.70 range all season. If Reign remains on that ratings plateau, it stands a good chance of being renewed. That’s because, as Mr. Gorman has noted, the CW has never entered a new season without six veteran scripted dramas. However, CW programs tend to lose their ratings at the end of the season. So it’ll be interesting to see if Reign maintains its ratings or gets overtaken by one or both of the new CW shows.

blah blah reign won’t be beast 2.0 yeah yeah

excuse after excuse with you pathetic little fans

  • Dave

    @Bill Gorman Haha :)

In all seriousness though, TTP, BATB and TCD are done with possibly one or both midseason show(s).

The Originals and Reign will be the freshmans renewed for sophomore seasons.

is it impossible for the CW to get Thursday Night Football?

  • thesnowleopard

Um, no. The reason Reign is on the bubble is because it still has well over half a season left to air, its ratings aren’t even close to good enough for an early renewal, spring is harsh on new CW shows, and other shows in its position have crashed and burned in the back half of their first seasons, thus being canceled.

You don’t even have to argue about retention, or whether that’s a factor. Reign may well squeak by to a renewal in the end if it holds up a little bit better than other shows, but that will come down to ratings to come, not solely whether or not the two midseason shows crash and burn. And with it getting 0.6s, already, it’s in the danger zone for the Bear.

  • iSayso

The bear can’t dine like that when The CW only serves up maggots.

  • HeadlessHorseman

Sad picture. I sure hope that these kinds of pictures don’t become a regular thing.

  • Rebooted

deadline reported that iZombie was a strong contender for a pilot order

  • HeadlessHorseman

Though I’m sure the Bear is happy, you need to tell him that he’s going to fill up and won’t have enough room for the main course.

  • Lady Toot Toot

@Dan The CW can’t possibly premiere 3 new dramas in the fall since they only have two new shows in development.

  • Bluebells

You are a coward, hiding behind your computer screen.

  • Noel

I could still see TTP getting a renewal because it honestly looks cheap to produce, the locations repeat themselves a lot in the show. Reign might still get renewed, but without a TVD lead in, don’t know how it can survive.

  • David Speakman

We all know that the CW primarily exists as a network to allow CBS TV and Warner Brothers make shows that will sell overseas and in syndication … and, hopefully not lose money.

The only sure-fire new show to renew is The Originals. The others, if cancelled, will be forgotten in the blink of an eye.

Reign and The Tomorrow People are effectively tied in the ratings – with Reign having a slight advantage. But I would guess it’s international sales prospects that will be the tie breaker here – not U.S. ratings.

  • StevieH

I can’t predict how well things are going to turn out with the new shows or if TTP holds it’s audience on Mondays or not. But if the season were to end now this is what i’d do.

    Monday: Reign followed by Supernatural.
Tuesday: The Originals followed by a new show possibly iZombie.
Wednesday: Arrow followed by a new show possibly Flash.
Thursday: The Vampire Diaries followed by a new show, a teeny romance show.
Firday: Hart of Dixie followed by the last few episodes of ANTM then by The Carrie Diaries.

  • HV

This is my prediction of most likely canceled -> renewed. The line is the dividing point.

    Beauty and the Beast
    The Carrie Diaries
    The Tomorrow People

    The Originals
    Hart of Dixie
    The Vampire Diaries

The Tomorrow People and Reign could go the other way, depending on how the midseason shows do and on if the CW wants to have a returning midseason show. I’m predicting that The 100 will do well and be renewed, and that The
CW will not want a midseason returning show. The other shows are definite on which way they will go.

  • Timmy G

@lady, Pedowitz will order more pilots (probably 6-8) in the upcoming weeks. Expect 5 to be ordered to series.

  • Isobel

I think till star crossed and the 100 start showing numbers we can’t any predictions on which of the two are cancelled.

  • Crystal

Someone earlier was wondering how someone could say one of the mid season shows was their favorite when it hadn’t aired….

I don’t recall witch show but either The 100 or Star Cross was screened at Comic con or one of those cons I believe. I have had other people tell me they saw the pilot already as well.
