While the cancellation bear made the prediction change a few weeks ago that Revenge is certain be renewed for a fourth season, now he's put it into a headline.

The bear is leaning positively on both Suburgatory and Nashville, but he's got plenty of time to make a prediction move, there's more than 10 weeks of ABC headlines to go!

While the ranking is still useful, at this point in 2014 bear cautions against reading too much into the current Index values for ABC shows. With their top 3 dramas yet to air a new episode in 2014, the overall network rating average is artificially depressed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2014. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2014, the "old" Fall predictions will stay in the table.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. You can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

 certain to be cancelled by May, 2014

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • andreskizzo .

Actually it was decently rated for a 10pm show, they just had a really good year and had to make choices. It did far better ratings wise than anything else that’s been there since. As for it being bad, that’s your opinion. I loved it.

  • Jason

GCB averaged a 2.0 adult18-49 rating by the time it finished it first season in spring 2012. And that was at sunday 10pm. ABC would kill to have a show at sunday 10pm that performed as well as GCB did!

  • catmincer

    YES. Finally!

  • Fred

Potential for next season, considering ABC doesn’t get the NFL Thursday deal.
DWTS- 2 hours- If at all possible. More competitive against the NFL and Cable.
    BACHELOR for mid season.
NASHVIILLE-Fans should follow this here. Should improve upon past failures.
OUAT-Hopefully fans will follow this. Good counterprograming against The VOICE and CBS sitcoms. A bit of a risk but rather see Sunday unscripted for a change.
    New Show- Fantasy genre
    CASTLE- So solid.
    New Show- Action/Adventure
    New Show- Procedural Drama
LAST MAN STANDING- if any sitcom deserves this slot, this one does.
GOLDBERGS- Should benefit greatly here. And improve upon past failures.
REVENGE- Welcome back home. Shouldn’t perform any worse than NASHVILLE did.
ABC can bring back SUBURGATORY later in the season if they want to renew it.
CBS did this all the time for RULES OF ENGAGEMENT.
SHARK TANK- Milk this very lucrative show for all its worth.
SHARK TANK- Might need to sign on some new panelists if original can’t commit to another hour. This show is simply way to profitable for just 1 hour a week.
    20/20 –
Keep Friday all unscripted. Makes for a very profitable night of programing. I rather see SHARK TANK air 1 hour earlier and hopefully help uplift the later programs.

  • Eren

Maybe you’re right but Nashville is not successful enough, I think

  • Fred

If ABC gets the NFL THURSDAY deal:
GREY’S- Fading but still stronger than REVENGE
SCANDAL – This move should help this very tough slot. ABC hasn’t had a hit here since Brother’s and Sisters!!
    DWTS-2 hours/ BACHELOR mid season
Still would rather see these on Sunday
But not possible in this scenario
    NEW SHOW- Action/Adventure
    NEW SHOW- Procedural drama
Would hate to see NASHVILLE canceled. Perhaps ABC can bring it back mid season.
Midseason ABC can always bring back GREY’S /SCANDAL. Would still want them to air another hour of SHARK TANK at 8 if at all possible.
SHARK TANK-Start the night off with a bang!
I really like keeping such a low rated night unscripted. Make more sense than wasting expensive scripted shows here. Also SHARK TANK an hour earlier should help the later slots. Worth the experiment..

  • Fred

I am such a huge fan of NASHVILLE., I’m hoping none of spring dramas rate well. Although RESSURECTION looks promising.

  • Anthony Ortiz

Yea I agree with you the cast was getting paid $400,000 per episode but the show was a money maker and in 2010 or 2011 I believe it was the #3rd highest money making show. If it wasn’t for Desperate Housewives the only hit on ABC would have been Lost. If ABC wouldn’t have put Grey’s after Desperate for the first 2 seasons the ratings for Grey’s would have never been that high and I doubt it would last this long. Desperate Housewives also made Brothers & Sisters a hit and Body of Proof. Housewives ratings were always the same as Grey’s, but the ratings felled because of Football and the Fox comedies. Grey’s never had as real competition and millions also abandon that show. Desperate only felled to 7 million 3 times and 6 million viewers once because of the Grammy’s. Grey’s just hit 7 million a few weeks ago with no competition. Marc Cherry also created hit ‘Devious Maids’ owned by ABC.

If the quality of this series doesn’t go down, for me, everything’s fine. I think Revenge is not a full-season series. I think it would be better if each season only have like 12-13 episodes. At least, maybe they wouldn’t do what they did in the second season (a lot of stories were created, the episodes were weak, but the season finale was incredible). But a short 5th season doesn’t seem that bad.

  • Ricardo

You’re schedule makes no sense whatsoever.

  • MuhammedAllah

Revenge wont make diddily squat unless they move it out of its killer Sun night-10PM will provide less competition, but lower ratings. I dont see how low it can go, and I absolutely LOVE the show!

  • Pablo Troncoso

I would love it if it ended on a 12 episodes 5th season just to reach 100 episodes :)

  • Pablo Troncoso

The Middle is what holds 8PM together, they would only move The Middle if Suborgatory could anchor that timeslot, and it doesn’t seem to be the case

  • HV

I say Nashville canceled, Suburgatory renewed.

  • BlackMasamune

I don’t know how much longer they can stretch Revenge beyond it’s original idea. To0 often are side stories and characters introduced to drag things out.

  • roare93

My guess is that ABC has had such a terrible year for new shows that most of the “bubble veterans” will be renewed (Suburgatory, Revenge, Nashville). ABC is going to have to cancel almost all of its freshman slate for the second year in a row – even a large influx of new shows next year won’t fill the gaps.

  • Ankit Dasgupta

We Knew That All Along ! Yay Revenge

  • Ray

Here’s what ABC should do Fall 2014:
8:00 — Dancing with the Stars / The Bachelor
    10:00 – New Drama
    8:00 — Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
9:00 — New Drama (like Agent Carter)
    10:00 – Castle
    8:00 — The Middle
    8:30 — The Goldbergs
    9:00 — Modern Family
9:30 — New Comedy (like the Kevin Hart project)
    10:00 – New Drama
    8:00 — Grey’s Anatomy
9:00 — New Drama (like How To Get Away with Murder)
    10:00 – Scandal
    8:00 — Last Man Standing
    8:30 — Suburgatory
    9:00 — Shark Tank
    10:00 – 20/20
    7:00 — America’s Funniest Home Videos
    8:00 — Once Upon a Time
    9:00 — New Drama / Resurrection (midseason)
    10:00 – Revenge

  • Fred

Yes , lots of REVENGE filler episodes last season. The show runners admitted it was difficult for them to produce 20+ great episodes in one season. Read that article in the TV GUIDE about a year ago.
This season, so far has been very consistent . Every episode is solid. Vast improvement over last season.

  • Fred

A 2.0 at 10:00 is impressive these days. A couple of seasons ago only OK.
ABC was in a better position at that time as well. I guess they thought it should have performed better given the strong lead in. DH was a lot stronger than Revenge even in its lowest rated final season.
